It may, but no official specification guarantees that an M2 Mac mini will broadcast a 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist continuously. Apple documents hardware video encode and decode capabilities, and OBS supports Apple Silicon hardware H.264 streaming. Whether a particular setup holds up unattended depends on its source videos, OBS workload, network upload and power settings. If you mean watching a 4K livestream rather than broadcasting one, the requirements are different: YouTube recommends 20 Mbps of sustained download speed for 4K UHD playback.

First, distinguish watching from broadcasting

“Run a playlist” can describe two different jobs. Watching a 4K60 live stream on the Mac mini means decoding the incoming video in a browser. Broadcasting a playlist means playing video sources, rendering a scene, encoding the result and uploading it to YouTube. The second job is much more demanding and is the relevant one if you want the Mac mini to keep a channel live.

  • Watching: YouTube recommends 20 Mbps sustained speed for 4K UHD playback. That is a download guideline, not an upload target for creating a livestream. YouTube also advises using an up-to-date browser and notes that live streams can require more speed and processing power. YouTube playback system requirements.
  • Broadcasting: the Mac must sustain the workload and upload a properly configured 4K60 signal. Use YouTube’s live-ingest guidance below, not the playback speed figure.

What the M2 Mac mini’s specifications establish

Apple lists the 2023 Mac mini with M2 as having hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW support, along with video decode, video encode and ProRes encode/decode engines. The model was offered with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 8 GB, 16 GB or 24 GB of unified memory. These specifications make video work plausible; they do not certify a particular continuous OBS workload. Apple: Mac mini (2023) – Tech Specs.

Apple separately states that the M2 Mac mini (2023) supports an external display up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60 Hz over HDMI, subject to display configuration. That is a display-output capability, not proof that the machine can continuously decode, composite, encode and upload a 4K60 livestream. Set the stream to YouTube’s 4K60 ingest guidance

YouTube’s recommendations for 2160p at 60 fps vary by ingest codec. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee of stability on a particular Mac or internet connection. YouTube Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Ingest codec YouTube-recommended bitrate for 4K60 YouTube-listed minimum for 4K60
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

The figures above are YouTube’s 2026 recommendations. For a real broadcast, a stable upload connection with headroom is more useful than merely reaching the listed minimum; fluctuations or competing traffic can still interrupt a stream.

Encoder and stream settings

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Codec: YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding on Apple Silicon and supports H.264 streaming there. If using OBS’s Apple Silicon hardware encoder, choose H.264 and set the YouTube bitrate accordingly.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate and resolution: set the output to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps only if the sources and whole workflow are intended to deliver that format.
  • Latency: YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.

Configure and test an OBS playlist workflow

OBS supports Apple Silicon and requires macOS 11 or later according to its system requirements. OBS cautions that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee performance at a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder or scene complexity; its published guidance is not an M2-specific continuous-stream benchmark. OBS: System Requirements and OBS: Hardware Encoding.

  1. Confirm the exact Mac and software: identify the M2 Mac mini model and memory configuration, install a compatible current macOS and OBS, then confirm OBS opens and recognizes the intended sources.
  2. Build the playlist scene: add the video files using the playback method you intend to keep running, and configure transitions, overlays, audio and any other sources. Extra filters, compositing and concurrent tasks add workload; keep the test representative of the final scene.
  3. Set the output deliberately: in OBS, open Settings → Video and configure the intended 3840 × 2160 output and 60 fps. Under Settings → Output → Streaming, select the Apple hardware H.264 encoder if that is your chosen path, set CBR and the relevant YouTube bitrate, and use a two-second keyframe interval. Exact labels can vary by OBS release.
  4. Connect YouTube: obtain the stream key in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup and enter it in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show or share it, and reset it if exposed.
  5. Check the network: measure sustained upload on the connection the Mac will actually use, preferably without other heavy traffic during the test. Compare it with YouTube’s recommendation for your codec and leave stability headroom. Wired Ethernet can reduce one source of wireless variability, but cannot guarantee adequate internet service.
  6. Prevent interruption: check macOS power and sleep settings so the Mac does not sleep during the planned run. Verify the playlist’s end behavior and transitions, audio continuity, and what happens after a network or encoder interruption.
  7. Run a representative test before relying on it: follow YouTube’s advice to test with audio and video motion similar to the real event. Test for at least the intended operating period if you need confidence over that period; no official source establishes a universal safe test duration for this setup. Monitor YouTube stream health and OBS dropped frames, errors and CPU/GPU activity. YouTube’s encoder guidance.

What continuous operation depends on

  • Source media: resolution, frame rate, codec and file behavior affect playback and processing. Mixed or damaged files may behave differently at playlist transitions.
  • Scene complexity: overlays, multiple sources, filters and transitions can increase rendering or encoding load. A scene that works in a short test may not represent a more elaborate production.
  • Memory and other tasks: Apple offered 8 GB, 16 GB and 24 GB M2 configurations, but the cited documentation does not establish which is sufficient for a given 4K60 playlist workflow. Avoid treating one configuration as a guaranteed minimum.
  • Network and power: upload interruptions, computer sleep, software errors and power loss can all stop an unattended broadcast. Hardware video engines do not prevent these failures.
  • YouTube content rules: a technically healthy stream does not establish that you have rights to the videos, music or other material in it, or that a channel complies with YouTube monetization policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content guidance before broadcasting or monetizing a playlist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Practical next step
YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames Upload stability, bitrate, competing network traffic Check the connection during the broadcast, reduce competing traffic, and retest at the codec-appropriate recommended bitrate with headroom.
OBS reports rendering or encoding lag Scene complexity, output settings or system load Remove unnecessary sources and filters, close other heavy applications, and test the Apple hardware H.264 path at the planned output settings.
Video or audio stops at a playlist transition Source playback or playlist end behavior Test every file and transition in sequence; confirm the playback source is configured to advance or loop as intended.
The stream ends after the Mac is left alone Sleep or power settings, network interruption, encoder failure Prevent sleep for the planned run and test interruption and restart behavior. Do not assume the setup will recover unattended unless you have verified it.
Stream key or connection is rejected Incorrect or outdated YouTube stream key or ingest setup Recheck the active live-stream setup in YouTube Studio and replace the key in OBS if needed; keep the key private.
