Changing an OBS Scene Collection is not documented as a cause that, by itself, ends a YouTube live stream. OBS says collections store scenes and sources—not output settings. If your stream drops at the same moment, check the active Profile and stream configuration, then use OBS status indicators and logs to distinguish a network interruption from rendering or encoding overload.

Does changing an OBS Scene Collection stop a YouTube stream?

OBS documents Scene Collections as sets of scenes and sources that can be switched for different situations. Its documentation is explicit: “Scene Collections do not store output settings. Use Profiles.” Profiles hold most output-related settings, including Stream, Video, and Output, and OBS allows you to mix and match Profiles with Scene Collections. OBS Project’s Scene Collections documentation and Profiles documentation therefore do not establish that switching collections inherently ends a live stream.

Timing is a useful clue, but not proof of cause. A switch might coincide with a network interruption, an output configuration issue, or a performance spike as OBS loads a complex collection. Check what OBS reported at the time before changing settings or attributing the outage to the collection switch.

Diagnose the interruption before your next public broadcast

  1. Confirm the active Profile and output configuration. In OBS, identify the active Profile and check its stream service, server, and stream key or connected account. Confirm these are the intended settings before and after changing collections. A Scene Collection is not where OBS stores those output settings.
  2. Reproduce the switch in a safe test. Before relying on the workflow during a public broadcast, test the relevant collections and verify that the stream stays healthy when you switch. OBS recommends testing scenes and stream operation in advance. Check YouTube’s live dashboard as well as OBS so you can tell whether the broadcast is still reaching YouTube.
  3. Inspect OBS status and logs at the exact time. Look for whether OBS stopped sending, reported dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, or showed rendering or encoding overload. Use the time of the incident to focus your investigation; the fact that it happened during a switch does not establish that the switch caused it.
  4. Make one controlled change at a time. If you change server, bitrate, network connection, or collection contents all at once, you will not know which change affected the result. Repeat the same test after each adjustment and note what OBS reports.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections

Follow the network branch when OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections. OBS Project describes these symptoms as a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide recommends checking server selection and bitrate, and investigating connection and software or hardware factors.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Check upload capacity and bitrate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point for bitrate. It is guidance, not a guarantee that a particular bitrate will be stable on your connection or suitable for every service. Test for stable upload capacity while streaming, rather than relying only on a headline speed from another time.
  • Try another ingest server where available. A different server can help establish whether the selected route is part of the problem. OBS also suggests testing another service as a diagnostic comparison; that is a way to narrow down the issue, not a fix for a YouTube-specific fault.
  • Check the local network path. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a possible source of streaming instability and recommends a wired connection for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet; a cable is relevant when wireless instability is suspected, not a guaranteed cure for a drop that merely coincides with a collection switch.
  • Review VPN, security software, drivers, router, and cables. These can affect the route from your computer to the ingest server. Change or test one factor at a time so you can identify whether the connection becomes more stable.

If the switch causes rendering or encoding strain

A collection change may load scenes or sources that are more demanding than the ones you were using. OBS warns that complex scenes and large collections can use more system resources; some sources can continue consuming resources even when they are not visible. This supports checking performance when a problem occurs during a switch, but does not prove that collection changes terminate a stream.

  • Compare OBS rendering and encoding indicators before, during, and after the switch.
  • Reduce or remove expensive sources in the collection that coincides with the problem, particularly resource-heavy browser sources.
  • Keep collections focused and split very large collections where that makes them easier to manage.
  • Repeat the switch test after each change to see whether the performance indicators improve.

Check automatic reconnect settings

OBS includes an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings. Review it if your connection sometimes drops, and test the behavior before you depend on it. Reconnect can help OBS recover from an interruption; it does not prevent the underlying network or performance problem, and the available OBS guidance does not guarantee that a reconnect preserves a particular YouTube live session.
