Playwright’s browser-driven form submission is the safest default; a direct form-encoded POST can work when the site explicitly supports that login route.
Choose browser login or a direct POST
Use the visible login form when you do not know all the authentication requirements. A form may depend on hidden fields, CSRF tokens, JavaScript, multifactor authentication, or other checks that a guessed POST would miss.
A direct POST is a reasonable alternative only when you understand the site’s supported authentication endpoint and required fields. Playwright’s API request context can send form data, share and update cookies, and follow redirects automatically.
Log in through the browser form
The example below uses Playwright with JavaScript. Replace the URLs, labels, and authenticated-page selector with the values used by the site. Install Playwright and its browser before running the script.

})();Use the form’s actual accessible labels and button name; the example selectors are not universal. Replace the URL wait with the expected post-login route, or wait for a reliable signed-in UI element if the site keeps the same URL. Redirects may be part of setting the session, so do not treat the first navigation as proof that login has finished.
Reuse an authenticated session when needed
After a successful login, save the browser context’s storage state and use it to initialize later contexts. This avoids repeating the login interaction when the session remains valid.

});Storage state can contain cookies and other material that lets someone impersonate the account. Keep it out of source control, restrict access to it, and do not publish it. Playwright recommends excluding the authentication-state directory from version control. See the Playwright authentication guide for the documented login and state-reuse workflow.
Use a direct form POST only when supported
If the application provides a suitable authentication endpoint, Playwright’s request context can submit encoded form fields and retain cookies for later use:

The POST response being successful does not by itself establish that the browser is authenticated; verify the protected page’s signed-in UI before capturing. Playwright documents form encoding, cookie behavior, and redirects in its APIRequestContext reference.
Verify the page before saving the screenshot
- Wait for the expected final URL or a page element available only to signed-in users.
- Navigate to the protected URL only after that signal appears.
- Wait for meaningful page content to render before capturing. A screenshot file can be created even when the page shows a login prompt or error.
- Use
fullPage: truewhen the full document is needed; otherwise omit it for a viewport capture.

Troubleshoot failed captures
- The capture shows the login page: the login may have failed, or the session was not carried into the browser context. Wait for a site-specific authenticated signal and confirm the context has the session cookies.
- The script times out waiting for the URL: the application may redirect to a different route or use an in-page state change. Wait for the correct final URL or an authenticated-only element instead.
- The POST returns an error or the session is rejected: check whether the endpoint requires hidden form values, a CSRF token, additional headers, or another authentication step. Use the browser flow if those requirements are not clear.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: wait for the relevant content selector rather than relying only on navigation completion. Some pages render data after the document loads.
- The saved session stops working: the site’s session may have expired or been revoked. Authenticate again and replace the stored state securely.
