A clean headless session generally cannot skip sign-in, and saved state can expire or be rejected by app or tenant policy.
Why headless Chrome needs an authenticated browser session
A protected web app typically redirects the browser to Microsoft Entra ID for sign-in, then returns it to the app after authentication and any required consent. A new headless browser context has no such signed-in session, so opening the protected URL alone will usually lead to a login or challenge page. Microsoft’s sample web app sign-in flow illustrates this browser redirect-and-return pattern.
For a screenshot of the rendered app, use a browser-based sign-in and preserve the resulting browser state. A device-code flow is different: it can authenticate a public client for browserless API access, but receiving a token does not itself create a signed-in Chrome page. Microsoft’s authentication code samples cover distinct browser and browserless scenarios.
Save a signed-in state with Playwright
Before you start
- Use an account and environment authorized for automated access.
- Install Playwright and its Chromium browser. For Node.js, the commands below use the Playwright package.
- Know the app’s sign-in URL, protected page URL, and a reliable app-specific signal that appears only after sign-in, such as a dashboard heading or account menu.
- Be ready to complete consent, MFA, or another challenge through the method approved for that account and tenant.
Install Playwright

npx playwright install chromiumRun the interactive sign-in once and save state
Create save-auth.js. Replace the example URL and success selector with values for your app. This opens a visible Chromium window so you can complete the actual sign-in flow, including any required user interaction.

})();The indefinite wait lets you finish sign-in manually; the script continues only when the app-specific heading appears. If your app has a different authenticated landing page, use an appropriate locator or wait for a final app URL instead. Do not save state immediately after clicking a sign-in button: the app may still be completing redirects or rendering its signed-in view. Capture the protected route in headless Chromium
Create capture.js and run it after saving state. The script creates a new context with the saved state, navigates to the protected page, verifies an authenticated-page signal, and writes a PNG screenshot.

The authenticated-page check is important: without it, a screenshot can succeed technically while capturing a login screen, consent page, or error. Playwright’s authentication documentation explains context state reuse; its codegen guidance also describes preserving authenticated state.

What Playwright state captures—and what it does not guarantee
Playwright storage state covers cookies and local storage; its relevant APIs and examples also support IndexedDB state. Apps may depend on session storage or other app-specific mechanisms, so validate that the saved state is sufficient for your target rather than assuming every app’s sign-in will persist from a default snapshot. Consult the authentication guide and state-preservation guidance for the exact API behavior.

The app or identity provider may stop accepting it because it expired, the account or session changed, policy demands a fresh challenge, or the app uses storage not included in the state file. Re-run the approved interactive setup when that happens.
Handle Microsoft Entra MFA and Conditional Access correctly
Whether sign-in requires additional verification depends on the tenant’s policy and the user’s configured methods. Microsoft documents Conditional Access policies that can require MFA in selected scenarios, as well as security defaults for tenants that do not use Conditional Access. Authenticator passwordless sign-in can require the user to approve a request, including number matching and a device PIN or biometric. Do not treat headless automation as a way to bypass a user challenge. Complete required verification through an authorized supported method, or ask the tenant administrator about an approved test arrangement. Microsoft’s Playwright guide for Power Platform samples discusses headful local authentication and certificate-backed patterns for that sample context; it is not a universal recipe for every Entra-protected app, and it does not establish that a certificate is suitable for a particular user flow or removes Conditional Access requirements.
Protect the authentication state file
A state file can contain cookies or headers that could let someone impersonate the signed-in account. Playwright explicitly warns that saved authentication state is sensitive. Treat it like a credential:
- Keep it out of source control. Add the auth-state directory to
.gitignore. - Restrict filesystem and artifact access to the people and jobs that need it.
- Do not print its contents or secrets derived from it in logs.
- Use an approved test account with only the permissions the capture requires.
- Remove the state file when it is no longer needed, and refresh it through the authorized sign-in flow when it stops working.

Troubleshoot sign-in and screenshot failures
The screenshot contains the Microsoft login page
- Confirm the state was saved only after the app reached its authenticated view.
- Confirm the capture context loads the same state file and that the target URL follows the expected app domain and redirects.
- Check that the app still accepts the session; repeat interactive sign-in if it expired or a fresh challenge is required.
- Wait for an app-specific authenticated element before taking the screenshot.
The flow stops at MFA or passwordless approval
This is an interactive requirement determined by the configured sign-in methods and tenant policy. Complete the prompt through an authorized method or coordinate an approved test setup with the tenant administrator. Do not assume headless Chrome can approve it unattended.
The app redirects even though state was restored
Check the URL and redirect path, cookie domain scope, state-file freshness, and whether the app relies on storage beyond the saved state. A snapshot is not a guarantee that the app will accept a session indefinitely; use the app’s authenticated-page check to detect rejection before capture.
A device-code flow returns a token but no screenshot-ready page
That flow is for browserless client or API access. It does not render the target UI as a signed-in Chrome session. Use the app’s real browser sign-in and save that browser state instead.

First verify that each run reaches the same authenticated route and waits for the same meaningful content to appear. Differences can also depend on the browser and operating environment; compare like with like rather than assuming a successful navigation guarantees identical rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can headless Chrome handle Microsoft Entra MFA by itself?
Not reliably as an unattended substitute for the user. If the tenant or configured sign-in method requires approval or another interactive challenge, complete it through an authorized method or use an administrator-approved test arrangement.
Does Microsoft device code let me screenshot a signed-in web app?
Not by itself. Device-code authentication can obtain tokens for browserless client or API access, but a screenshot of the rendered app requires a browser session that has completed the app’s sign-in flow.
