To monitor website changes with Urlwatch on Windows 11, install Urlwatch with Python’s pip, define the pages to check, run it manually, then create a recurring task in Windows Task Scheduler. Urlwatch compares each run with saved results and reports changes; it only checks while the computer is available to run the scheduled task.
Install Urlwatch on Windows 11

Install a current Python environment appropriate for your Windows system. The Urlwatch installation guide documents installing the package with pip and verifying the command is available: Urlwatch installation.

The current documentation surfaced for Urlwatch is version 2.29. If a command or option differs in your installed version, check its local help and features output.
Add a website to monitor
Urlwatch stores monitored jobs in urls.yaml and global settings, including reporters, in urlwatch.yaml. Use its editing commands to open those files safely:
urlwatch --editedits the job list.urlwatch --edit-configedits global configuration and reporters.
Start with a simple URL job, such as this example in urls.yaml:
name: Example page
url: https://example.com/For multiple jobs, separate each YAML job with a line containing ---. Keep the first job small until you have confirmed that Urlwatch retrieves the expected content. A plain URL job works when the text you care about is present in the page’s ordinary HTTP response.
Reduce noisy changes with filters
If a page contains rotating timestamps, navigation or other content that changes frequently, use filters to retain only the meaningful part. Urlwatch supports CSS or XPath extraction, HTML-to-text conversion, JSON formatting, text matching and other filters. Configure the relevant filters in the job definition; consult the Urlwatch jobs documentation for available types and syntax.

When a page needs JavaScript
A regular URL job retrieves the response; it does not render a page as a full browser would. For content that appears only after JavaScript runs, use a browser job with navigate. Browser jobs require installing browsers through Playwright. Reserve that setup for pages where a regular URL job does not expose the content you need. See the job documentation and filter documentation.
Run and verify Urlwatch manually
Before automating, run urlwatch in the same terminal where installation succeeded. Inspect its output and confirm that the job retrieves the right material. By default, Urlwatch writes a report to standard output. Its checking cadence is determined by how often you run it, and the project recommends running no more frequently than every 30 minutes. That is a project recommendation, not permission from any particular website; respect the site’s terms and avoid unnecessary requests.
The default URL timeout is 60 seconds. The timeout job option is configurable in seconds; details are in the job options documentation.
Schedule recurring checks with Windows Task Scheduler
Urlwatch recommends Windows Task Scheduler for Windows users because cron is not installed by default. Task Scheduler launches a program on chosen triggers; Microsoft documents scheduling tasks for Windows 11 in its task creation reference. Set a recurring time-based or daily trigger, then configure an action to launch Urlwatch.

For the action, use the full path to the Python executable and pass
-m urlwatchas its argument. This avoids relying on the scheduled task finding the Urlwatch launcher through its environment. Alternatively, use the full path to theurlwatchlauncher if you have confirmed that it works interactively. -
Save the task, use Task Scheduler’s run action to test it, then inspect its last-run result and any output or configured notification.

The Python executable plus -m urlwatch approach is operational guidance based on Python module invocation and Urlwatch’s command-line entry point, not a Windows-specific recipe quoted by the documentation. Exact Task Scheduler screens can vary. Keep the computer available and connected when the task is due; the documentation reviewed does not establish behavior during sleep or shutdown.
Choose a sensible interval
Set the trigger according to how quickly you need to notice a change and what the monitored site allows. A daily check can suit slowly changing pages. Urlwatch recommends at least 30 minutes between runs; checking more often increases request frequency without guaranteeing earlier or more reliable alerts.
Choose where change reports go
Console output is the simplest way to verify a job. For alerts elsewhere, Urlwatch offers optional reporters, including email/SMTP, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Matrix and Pushover. Many reporters require extra dependencies, credentials and service-specific configuration. Set the chosen reporter under report in urlwatch.yaml; use the reporter documentation for configuration details.

Test a reporter independently with its name:
urlwatch --test-reporter <reporter-name>If it fails, check the reporter settings and run with --verbose to see diagnostic output. A successful interactive reporter test does not prove the scheduled task will use the same environment or configuration, so verify a scheduled run separately.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
Windows reports a UnicodeDecodeError for YAML
If Urlwatch cannot read UTF-8 YAML and raises UnicodeDecodeError, its handbook points to Python 3.7+ UTF-8 mode. Set PYTHONUTF8=1 for the command session, or configure it as a user or system environment variable where appropriate. Ensure the scheduled process receives the same variable. The scheduled task does not appear to run Urlwatch
First run the task manually with Task Scheduler and inspect its last-run result. Confirm that the action uses the full path to Python (with -m urlwatch) or the verified full path to the Urlwatch launcher. Compare the task’s environment and working context with the terminal where the manual command worked.
The report is empty or misses visible page content
Compare what Urlwatch receives from a plain URL job with what appears in a browser. If the relevant content is created by JavaScript and absent from the response, configure a navigate browser job and install its browsers through Playwright. If the content is present but diffs are noisy, apply a filter to extract the relevant text.
Notifications do not arrive
Run urlwatch --test-reporter <reporter-name> interactively, review the reporter configuration and credentials, and inspect --verbose output. Then test a full scheduled run separately; the scheduled environment may differ from your interactive session.
