To use a YouTube stream key for a continuous lofi broadcast, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into an encoder, then start sending your audio and video. The key authenticates the feed; it does not keep the broadcast running on its own. A computer, hardware encoder, or cloud service must keep sending the feed, and a scheduled stream may also require you to click Go live in Live Control Room.
What a YouTube stream key does
A YouTube stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send audio and video to the right YouTube stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. You can use a reusable custom key, and if a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains key management.
The key is not the broadcast itself. The encoder or continuous-streaming service has to keep transmitting the media. YouTube also distinguishes the incoming stream—the feed—from the viewer-facing broadcast. Its API documentation gives an example of a 24/7 feed associated with a separate broadcast, but ordinary manual setup does not require API use. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes that distinction.
Prepare your channel and lofi media
Check live-stream eligibility early
Before launch, enable live streaming and confirm your channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm you can stream every element
Use music, artwork, animation, and other visuals that you own or have permission to stream. The fact that a track or illustration is available online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check YouTube’s current copyright policies before publishing; transmission setup guidance does not determine the rights status of a particular lofi track or visual.
Create or choose the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab and create a new stream or select one to reuse. YouTube can load previous settings, including a previously used key.
- Review the stream’s title, description, privacy setting, and other metadata. Choose public, private, or unlisted according to who should be able to watch.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. If you need a reusable credential across setups, configure a custom key in stream settings. Limit who can access it.

Enter the stream key in OBS or another encoder
- Open your encoder and choose YouTube as the destination if it offers a direct YouTube connection.
- If it asks for server details manually, paste YouTube’s Stream URL into the server or RTMP server field.
- Paste the Stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Do not paste the key into a public scene name, description, or shared screenshot.
- Set up the lofi audio and visuals, then start streaming from the encoder.
- Open Live Control Room and wait for the incoming feed preview and status. For a scheduled stream, click Go live if YouTube prompts you to activate the viewer-facing broadcast.
Field names vary between encoders, but the essential mapping is the same: stream URL to server, stream key to key. YouTube’s encoder directory includes software, hardware, and cloud options; check the current listing and compatibility before choosing one. YouTube’s live-streaming resources provide its encoder information.
Use settings that YouTube can ingest reliably
YouTube publishes settings for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supported video codecs (H.264, H.265, or AV1), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to YouTube’s servers. Use the settings and bitrate appropriate to your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every combination.

- Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: automatic detection is appropriate unless you have a specific reason to set manual values with a custom key.
- Audio and video: verify that the encoder is actually outputting both, and check the preview before relying on the stream.

Keep a lofi broadcast running continuously
What must stay online
For a continuous broadcast, something must keep sending audio and video. With local software encoding, the computer, encoder process, and network connection must remain operational. With a standalone hardware encoder, that device and its connection must stay active. A cloud service can run prerecorded video without relying on a home computer staying powered. YouTube does not identify one universally best approach; choose based on how much direct control, local uptime responsibility, and monitoring you want.

Test and monitor before leaving it unattended
- Start a test stream and confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the intended visuals and audio.
- Check stream-health messages and the encoder’s output rather than assuming that a connected key means the feed is healthy.
- For a longer run, verify that the source playlist or media actually repeats as intended and that audio does not stop between files.
- Keep a way to check the feed and respond to interruptions. YouTube recommends checking output quality and network performance; it does not make the stream key a substitute for monitoring.

Why is my YouTube stream key not working?
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct fields. If the encoder still cannot start, obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- YouTube receives no preview: Confirm the encoder is actively streaming and that it is using the intended server URL and key. A saved key alone does not transmit a feed.
- The preview appears but the scheduled broadcast is not public: Check Live Control Room for a Go live prompt and activate the broadcast if required. Also verify the privacy setting.
- The feed stutters or drops: Check the encoder’s stream-health status and outbound network performance. If viewers on separate connections report the same issue, investigate the encoder; if its output looks healthy, check the upload connection.
- Audio or video is missing: Inspect the encoder output and preview, then check CPU load and the source media. Update the encoder software if it is out of date.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio, then update every encoder or service that uses the old key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key.
End the stream and plan for an archive
To finish a scheduled broadcast, use End Stream in YouTube and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a longer continuous stream, so make a separate recording or confirm YouTube’s current behavior if you need a complete archive.
