Recommended OBS settings for a VPS
Set the output resolution and frame rate to match what you intend to send to YouTube. For a CPU-limited VPS, 1080p30 at 5 Mbps is a practical baseline for H.264 material with static or modest motion. Use CBR and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guaranteed picture-quality outcomes for every source. YouTube’s encoder guidance page also lists other bitrate values, including 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Match the resolution, frame rate, and codec row shown in YouTube’s current guidance and your Live settings rather than treating a bitrate as universal. YouTube encoder guidance
Your VPS connection needs to carry the configured bitrate continuously, with additional headroom for stability. The cited guidance does not establish one universal headroom margin or outbound-bandwidth minimum for VPS instances, so validate the selected instance and network path under the intended load.

Choose an x264 preset that the VPS can sustain
The x264 preset sets the CPU work spent compressing video. A faster preset uses less CPU but is less compression-efficient; a slower preset uses more CPU and may improve compression quality. On a VPS with limited or shared CPU, sustained stability matters more than selecting a slower preset.
Begin with veryfast. If OBS reports encoding lag, first reduce output resolution or frame rate, then consider a faster x264 preset if needed. OBS’s x264 guide gives 720p30 at 3,000–5,000 kbps and 1080p30 at 5,000–8,000 kbps as veryfast examples for low-to-medium motion. OBS summarizes the variability in its guide: “There is no such thing as ‘best settings’.” The appropriate trade-off depends on resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scene motion, and available CPU.
Configure and test the stream before leaving it live
- Set the output target. In OBS, choose the intended output resolution and frame rate. Start at 1920×1080 and 30 fps for the baseline, or use 1280×720 and 30 fps if the VPS cannot keep up.
- Set the encoder. In OBS output settings, select x264 on a CPU-only VPS, set the rate control to CBR, and use the veryfast preset as the starting point.
- Set bitrate and keyframes. Use the matching YouTube H.264 recommendation from the table above, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS ingest. Configure OBS with the RTMPS ingest details and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
- Test representative content. Before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, test a scene with movement and audio similar to the planned stream at the exact resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Watch both sides of the stream. Check OBS for encoding lag, dropped frames, and CPU pressure, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. If problems recur, reduce resolution or frame rate and retest.
YouTube automatically transcodes live ingest for viewer playback, so the settings you send are not necessarily the only format viewers can select. Still, stable ingest matters: transcoding does not fix an unstable encoder or network connection. YouTube encoder guidance OBS Studio overview

When hardware encoding is available
If the VPS exposes a supported hardware encoder to OBS, hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU. Availability depends on the VPS provider and instance; confirm the encoder is actually accessible in your environment. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. OBS hardware encoding
Compare options by sustained CPU headroom, motion detail needed, output resolution and frame rate, the matching YouTube bitrate, and actual VPS network stability. The cited material does not establish a universal vCPU count, provider uptime level, or VPS bandwidth margin for OBS. A generic instance specification alone cannot prove that a 24/7 workload will remain stable.

Troubleshoot common instability
- OBS shows encoding lag: The encoder cannot keep up with the workload. Reduce resolution or frame rate first; if necessary, use a faster x264 preset. Retest with the actual scene.
- OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube reports delivery problems: The stream is not reaching YouTube reliably. Check the VPS network path and whether it can continuously deliver the configured bitrate; lower the bitrate by moving to a lower resolution or frame rate if needed.
- CPU pressure rises during the test: A slower preset or higher output target may be too demanding for the instance. Return to veryfast and reduce output load before considering any slower preset.
- Image quality or motion detail is insufficient: Confirm the bitrate corresponds to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current guidance. Higher frame rates and more motion can require more encoding capacity and bandwidth.
- The stream key or ingest connection fails: Confirm OBS is using the current YouTube Live stream key and RTMPS ingest details. Treat the key as a credential and regenerate it in YouTube if it has been exposed.
Copyright and continuous-stream considerations
Technical settings do not grant permission to broadcast the material. Before running a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, image, and audio track, including music that may be embedded in a recording. YouTube’s live ingest recommendations address technical configuration, not copyright clearance. Review YouTube’s policies and the permissions applicable to your content before going live.
