OBS can reconnect a stream after a connection drop while OBS is still running. If OBS itself crashes or exits, its reconnect setting cannot reopen the application: you need an operating-system supervisor to relaunch OBS, optionally with the --startstreaming launch parameter. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings govern the broadcast’s behavior, not whether OBS restarts. Test the full chain before relying on an unattended loop.
First identify what failed
“The stream stopped” can describe two different problems. Choose the recovery method based on whether OBS is still open:
| Failure | Recovery layer | What it does | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS remains open, but its output loses connection | OBS Automatically Reconnect | Retries the output connection using OBS retry settings. | It does not relaunch an OBS process that has crashed or exited. OBS Output API reference |
| OBS exits or crashes | Operating-system or process supervisor plus an OBS launch command | Detects that OBS has exited and launches it again; --startstreaming requests streaming at startup. |
It cannot fix the cause of the crash or ensure YouTube accepts the stream. OBS launch parameters |
Recover a connection drop while OBS is still running
- In OBS, open Settings and go to the output/streaming settings for the output you use.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect, then choose a retry delay and maximum retry count that suit your stream. Exact menu placement can vary by OBS release.
- Save the setting and test by interrupting the connection while leaving OBS open.
OBS’s output API describes a retry count and retry interval that doubles after each retry. A retry count of zero disables reconnect. Reconnect applies only to outputs that support it; it is not a process watchdog. OBS Output API reference
Restart OBS itself with an external supervisor
For a process crash, configure your operating system or a process-monitoring service to notice that OBS has exited and launch it again. The appropriate configuration depends on your operating system and whether OBS runs in an interactive desktop session; the OBS documentation describes launch parameters, not a complete universal watchdog recipe.

Make the relaunch reproducible
OBS documents --startstreaming to request streaming when it launches. You can also specify a profile and scene collection with --profile and --collection, so an automated launch can select the intended OBS configuration. Consult the OBS launch parameters documentation for the supported syntax and your installed version.
On Windows, OBS says automated or scheduled launches should set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Test under the same account and session context your supervisor will use: an OBS instance launched outside the expected desktop session may not behave like one opened manually.

Use a restart delay and monitor failures
Do not configure an unlimited rapid restart loop. Add a delay and, where available, notifications or logging. If OBS crashes repeatedly, restarting it without addressing the underlying problem can simply repeat the failure. A supervisor also cannot bring back a machine that is powered off, restore unavailable internet, repair a broken media source, or make an invalid stream key valid.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings
In YouTube Live, review the stream key and the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections for the specific stream. The encoder uses a stream URL and stream key to send its input. Auto-start and Auto-stop affect the broadcast lifecycle; they do not restart OBS. YouTube notes that reusing stream settings also copies those selections, so check them when creating or reusing a stream. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Do not assume every crash, power loss, or long outage leaves a broadcast resumable. The official guidance does not establish one universal timeout or guarantee that YouTube will accept and resume every relaunch.
Test the entire recovery chain before an unattended loop
- Use a controlled test rather than your important live event. Confirm OBS opens with the intended profile, scene collection, scene, and media source.
- Test an output interruption while OBS stays open to verify the reconnect behavior separately.
- Test a process exit to check that the supervisor detects it, waits as configured, and launches OBS with the intended parameters.
- Confirm OBS is sending the expected video and audio, and check YouTube’s stream health and broadcast status.
- Repeat under the actual account/session context and network conditions you expect to use.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, choosing quality that is reliable for the available connection, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings for a few minutes. Troubleshoot the common failure points
- OBS stays open but does not reconnect: verify Automatically Reconnect is enabled for the output in use, the output supports reconnect, and the retry count is not zero.
- OBS crashes but does not reopen: check that the supervisor is monitoring the correct process and has permission to launch OBS in the expected user session.
- OBS reopens but does not stream: verify the launch parameters, selected profile and scene collection, stream key, and YouTube broadcast settings. Confirm that
--startstreamingis being passed to OBS as intended. - The stream input returns but YouTube does not go live as expected: review Auto-start and Auto-stop for that stream and check the broadcast status; those settings control broadcast behavior but do not guarantee recovery.
- OBS repeatedly restarts: increase the delay or stop automatic relaunches while diagnosing the crash, media source, system, or network issue. Add an alert or manual recovery plan rather than allowing rapid repeated launches.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than keeping a local OBS process alive, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
