Start with a supervised shift and review how it went before relying on them alone.
Define the job before you recruit
“Moderator” can mean anything from removing spam to coordinating a team during a busy broadcast. Write a short role brief so you and each candidate understand what the job entails.
- Coverage: platform, broadcast dates and hours, time zone, expected frequency, and whether the moderator covers the full stream or only part of it.
- Audience: likely chat volume, audience languages, community norms, and any content-specific sensitivities.
- Responsibilities: for example, welcoming viewers, answering routine questions, removing spam, responding to harassment, handling raids, or coordinating other moderators.
- Decision rights: which actions the moderator may take independently, which require a warning first, and which require your approval.
- Terms: whether the role is paid or volunteer, what the schedule requires, and how either side can end the arrangement.
Twitch’s moderation guidance recommends choosing reliable people and aligning expectations. TikTok’s safety guidance likewise emphasizes discussing expectations and enabling appropriate permissions before a moderator begins.
Where to find candidates
Start with people whose judgment you have seen
For a small community, a trusted regular or someone you already know may be a sensible first candidate. Look for a record of calm, fair participation—not simply high activity or agreement with you. For a larger channel, consider active community members who can follow shared procedures and work with other moderators.

This is a useful starting point, not a universal hiring formula. A 2023 survey by Joseph Seering and Sanjay R. Kairam covered 1,053 adult moderators in the United States on Twitch. It found differences in recruitment, onboarding, and motivations between smaller and larger channels; its findings should not be treated as a rule for every platform or community.
Use referrals and creator communities
Ask trusted members or other creators for referrals, and consider specialist creator communities where moderation experience is relevant. In each case, assess the individual against your brief rather than treating a referral as a guarantee of fit.
Consider a paid marketplace carefully
Modwork describes itself as a marketplace for paid moderation sessions. Its site says creators can search by platform, language, time zone, and availability, and displays session history and reviews. It also describes escrow payments. Those are vendor statements, not independently verified guarantees: check current profiles, terms, fees, and payment protections directly before booking.

Screen candidates with realistic situations
Ask candidates how they would handle situations that are likely in your chat. These prompts are practical ways to discuss judgment, not a validated hiring test.

- A burst of repetitive spam appears. What would you remove, and when would you use a timeout or another restriction?
- A viewer targets someone with harassment, while another person posts a borderline joke. How would you apply the written rules consistently?
- The same person repeatedly breaks a rule after a warning. What action would you take, and what would you document or report?
- A sudden raid or surge of unfamiliar accounts arrives. What would you do first, and how would you coordinate with the creator or other moderators?
- The creator is not responding and you are unsure whether a message crosses a boundary. What would you do while waiting for guidance?
Listen for proportionate responses, consistency, calm communication, and a clear sense of when to escalate rather than improvising a new rule. Also ask which platforms they have moderated, what hours they can reliably cover, which languages they can handle, and whether they can share references or examples of prior work.
Agree on rules, communication, and a trial shift
Before assigning platform access, write down the operating agreement in a place both of you can consult. Tailor the detail to the role: a moderator handling a short, quiet broadcast may need a simpler orientation than someone coordinating a team in a busy channel.

- Community rules, preferred tone, and content that is prohibited.
- When to warn, time out, ban, delete, hide, or report, and who makes the final call in uncertain cases.
- How and when to contact you, including what to do if you are unavailable.
- Privacy expectations, shift coverage, handoffs, and how to coordinate with other moderators.
- Any compensation, schedule changes, and how to raise concerns about the role.
Consider a supervised first stream or trial shift, followed by a brief review. Discuss specific decisions and any points of uncertainty, then update the written guidance where needed. The 2023 Twitch moderator study found that onboarding patterns differed by channel size; there is no single orientation process established for all communities.
Grant only the permissions the role needs
Use the platform’s own role controls, review the current official instructions before the event, and verify access before depending on a moderator during a live broadcast. Labels and available controls can change, and some features depend on account or creator settings.

YouTube lets creators assign standard or managing moderators. YouTube Help describes moderation tools including blocked words, holding potentially inappropriate messages, slow mode, deleting messages, timing out users, and hiding users. Managing moderators have more permissions than standard moderators, so choose the role that matches the agreed scope rather than defaulting to the broader one.

TikTok LIVE
TikTok LIVE materials describe creator-assigned moderators and tools to mute, block, filter, report, and pin comments; some comment controls depend on permissions granted by the creator. TikTok LIVE Studio help says moderators can be added from LIVE chat and removed in moderator settings. Check the current interface and the permissions you intend to grant before the moderator’s first shift.
Twitch
Twitch has channel moderator roles and moderation settings, including follower verification and chat restrictions. Its guidance recommends reliable human moderators and cautions that automated systems are not fully accurate. Bots and automated moderation can support human judgment, but should not be treated as a substitute for it.

If you have more than one viable candidate, use the same criteria and examples for each person. A 2023 study found that moderators’ self-described roles corresponded with differences in the tasks they performed, and that enforcement and coordination became more common as channels grew. Match the hire to the work you actually need done.

How much does a livestream moderator cost?
No reliable cross-platform pay range is established here. Rates depend on the person, platform, workload, schedule, language, and duties, so do not treat one profile or job post as a market-wide benchmark. Modwork’s site has displayed an example profile with an hourly rate and says it charges a 12% fee on completed bookings; those are vendor-controlled details, not an independent estimate of typical pay. Check the current listing and terms directly, and agree in writing what the quoted amount covers.
