Debian 13 Trixie is a sensible default for a headless 24/7 music-streaming server; Ubuntu Server LTS is an equally practical choice if it better fits your experience, hosting provider, or package workflow. Neither has been shown to be inherently more reliable or faster for this workload. Choose based on the system you can maintain and recover confidently, then select software according to whether you are broadcasting to radio listeners or sending a continuous programme to YouTube Live.
First decide what “YouTube music radio” means
These are two different publishing setups. An internet radio station sends audio to listeners through a radio server; a YouTube Live broadcast sends a live programme to YouTube. The distinction affects the software and configuration you need, but it does not change the Debian-versus-Ubuntu recommendation.
Internet radio for listeners
In a common setup, Liquidsoap generates and encodes the programme, then sends it to Icecast, which relays the stream to listeners. Liquidsoap’s documentation describes that division of responsibilities in its Icecast and Shoutcast workflow. Icecast is server software for streaming multimedia, not the programme automation layer.
A continuous YouTube Live broadcast
Liquidsoap also describes sending output to YouTube Live using RTMP. Icecast is not the component that publishes to YouTube. Confirm the output method, YouTube stream settings, and the behavior you need on disconnect before choosing the rest of the production chain; see the Liquidsoap project overview.

Debian stable or Ubuntu Server LTS?
Both are defensible server choices. The official sources establish release-support policies and software availability, not a controlled reliability or performance comparison for continuous music streaming.
| Choice | When it fits | Published maintenance information | Software path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian stable | A conservative headless base, especially if you already administer Debian systems. | Debian lists Debian 13 Trixie as current stable and describes a five-year release lifecycle: three years of full support followed by two years of LTS. Check the Debian release page for current status and package-specific details. | Icecast and Liquidsoap have documented Debian installation options; verify package versions and required features for your setup. |
| Ubuntu Server LTS | You know Ubuntu better, your provider offers a suitable Ubuntu image, or your existing package and support practices favor it. | Ubuntu LTS releases arrive every two years and receive five years of standard security maintenance for packages in Main. Ubuntu Pro offers extended coverage separately; check the Ubuntu release-cycle policy. | Icecast and Liquidsoap have documented Ubuntu installation options; verify package versions and required features for your setup. |
These timelines are distribution-level guidance, not a promise that every package receives identical coverage for the full period. Review the support status of the particular release and software packages you will run.
Choose the distribution you can operate
For a new headless host without a strong existing preference, Debian stable is a straightforward starting point. Ubuntu Server LTS is not a compromise in compatibility: choose it when your familiarity, provider image, or operational workflow makes it easier to patch and troubleshoot. That practical tie-breaker matters more than an unsupported claim that one distribution keeps a stream alive better.

For listener-facing internet radio
- Install a supported Debian or Ubuntu server release and apply its security updates.
- Use Liquidsoap for programme generation and encoding, including the source and scheduling logic your station requires.
- Send Liquidsoap’s output to Icecast, then configure Icecast to relay it to listeners.
- Check the Liquidsoap and Icecast documentation for the exact install path and configuration supported by your release. Icecast notes that Debian and derivatives such as Ubuntu package it as
icecast2, and recommends distribution packages when their integration fits the system: Icecast downloads. Liquidsoap documents Debian/Ubuntu builds as well as other package and image options: Liquidsoap installation.
For YouTube Live
Use a Liquidsoap output documented for YouTube Live, or another production chain you have validated for that destination. Configure the YouTube stream key and output on the publishing component; Icecast is for relaying to radio listeners, not a substitute for a YouTube publishing output. The available project documentation establishes that Liquidsoap describes RTMP output to YouTube Live, but it does not settle account eligibility, current YouTube interface labels, music licensing, or the configuration appropriate for every channel.
Do you need OBS or a desktop environment?
Not necessarily. A basic automated audio service using Liquidsoap and Icecast does not by itself require OBS or a graphical desktop. OBS may be relevant if your production workflow needs it, but OBS lists Linux requirements including OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and an X or Wayland graphics system. It also cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording: performance depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.

Those are OBS requirements, not a sizing guide for an audio-only server. No universal minimum CPU, memory, disk, or upload bandwidth is established for a 24/7 station here. Requirements depend on the encoder and quality, media library, number of outputs, and audience or publishing setup. Estimate and monitor the actual workload rather than treating desktop-streaming guidance as an audio-server benchmark.
Continuous operation: what the distribution does—and does not—guarantee
The operating system provides the base on which your automation and streaming services run. Continuous playback also depends on the programme source, service configuration, host, network, destination, and recovery behavior. The published distribution lifecycle information does not establish uptime for a particular server, and no comparative test shows Debian or Ubuntu to be more reliable for this workload. Plan updates and recovery around your own deployment rather than assuming a distribution choice alone prevents interruptions.

Copyright and channel checks before going live
Choosing Linux does not grant rights to broadcast music or establish that a YouTube channel is eligible for a particular live-stream setup. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the recordings and their intended use, and check current YouTube rules and account settings for your channel before broadcasting. The operating-system and streaming-software documentation does not determine those permissions or requirements for your specific music library.
