You can run a prerecorded video as a continuous YouTube Live stream from an Indian VPS by installing FFmpeg, supplying YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, and running FFmpeg under a service manager that restarts it after a failure. “Always-on” is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee: you still need to monitor the VPS, network and YouTube ingest. This guide covers looping a file; a live camera or other live input needs a different input and reconnect strategy.

Before you configure the VPS

Enable YouTube Live

Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before setting up the server. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Choose and prepare the source

This procedure assumes a prerecorded file that you have the right to stream. Confirm that the file plays correctly and decide whether FFmpeg should re-encode it or pass through its existing audio and video streams. Stream-copying can reduce CPU use, but only works when the source codecs and stream properties are suitable for YouTube’s ingest settings.

If your source is a live input rather than a file, do not use the file-looping options below. Configure the correct input for that device or feed and plan separately for source disconnects and reconnection.

Choose an Indian VPS for sustained outbound streaming

An Indian server is a hosting-location choice, not a special YouTube encoding mode. The official guidance does not establish a preferred Indian provider or region, and location alone does not prove a better route. Check the actual instance’s network performance before relying on it.

  • Confirm the provider permits sustained outbound streaming and check transfer caps, egress charges and any fair-use terms.
  • Check that the required India region is available, and that you have console or restart access if the instance or FFmpeg process fails.
  • Measure sustained outbound capacity from the chosen VPS. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream bitrate and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. For a target bitrate B, plan for at least B × 1.2 of sustained outbound capacity, plus room for other traffic. This is an application of YouTube’s stated margin, not a VPS certification or benchmark. See YouTube’s encoder and bandwidth guidance.
  • Allow enough disk space for the source media and logs. If you will re-encode, size CPU capacity based on the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; test the actual workload rather than assuming a fixed instance size.

No particular VPS host or plan is recommended here: provider availability, network quality and pricing vary, and should be checked directly before purchase.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
  2. On the Stream tab, create or select a stream, then copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Follow YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions for the current interface and visibility options.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS server URL if it is offered and supported. Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies TLS on port 443. Use the exact URL shown in your Live Control Room; do not guess an endpoint.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file, restrict file permissions, and keep it out of public shell history, source control, screenshots and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the server configuration.

Set the encoder profile and prepare the file

Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the exact resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to send. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Audio and video settings also depend on the chosen output profile; check the current YouTube encoder settings instead of copying a bitrate from an unrelated tutorial.

The command below is a template for a file that needs H.264 video and AAC audio encoding. Replace the uppercase placeholders with values for your output profile and the server path from YouTube. The example shows the endpoint shape only: in production, do not put the real key in a command line. Supply the endpoint and key through a protected configuration method.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/source.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
  -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
  -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the file at its intended playback rate rather than sending it as fast as the VPS can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode the video and audio. Adjust or remove them if your output profile calls for different settings.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set the target and maximum video bitrate; -bufsize controls the rate-control buffer. Choose values appropriate to YouTube’s profile guidance.
  • -g sets the video keyframe interval in frames. Convert the recommended two-second interval to frames for your output frame rate; do not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
  • -f flv selects the container used for the RTMP-family ingest output.

This is a starting template, not a tested universal command. For an already compatible file, evaluate stream-copy mode (for example, mapping the streams and using -c copy) to avoid re-encoding; verify the result against YouTube’s accepted settings before relying on it. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation and protocol documentation describe the relevant options and RTMP-family protocols.

Run FFmpeg as a recoverable service

For a persistent VPS process, run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. Configure restart-on-failure, preserve logs, and monitor both process health and outbound traffic. A restart policy can restart a crashed process; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted output or fix an unavailable source or network route.

Keep the protected stream key outside the unit file if that file is readable more broadly than your secret configuration. Restrict access to the account and files that contain it. FFmpeg documents TCP keepalive support for long-lived RTMP connections, but keepalive does not replace recovery handling or confirmation that YouTube has received the restarted stream.

After starting the service, inspect its logs and YouTube’s Live Control Room for an incoming preview. Test a deliberate process restart and verify that the feed returns before treating the setup as operational. For YouTube’s recommended preview and monitoring checks, see its live-stream setup guidance.

Test privately, then monitor the public stream

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test stream so you can check the incoming preview without broadcasting publicly.
  2. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive as expected. Check the watch page and a mobile device as well as the Live Control Room.
  3. Verify that the loop returns to the beginning cleanly, and check for errors or process exits in the VPS logs.
  4. Test your recovery plan and confirm that YouTube receives the restarted feed. Monitor the stream during operation for audio, video and network problems.
  5. Change visibility to public only when you are ready for viewers to access it.

Plan for archives and content rights

Do not rely on a very long stream for its replay

YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a longer stream may not be captured. In YouTube Help’s words, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If preserving a replay matters, make an independent recording and schedule sessions below that threshold rather than assuming an uninterrupted broadcast will become a complete archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Make sure you have the necessary rights

Use only video and audio for which your channel has the necessary rights. YouTube’s Terms of Service place responsibility on the content provider to hold those rights, and live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and terms. Repeating a file or hosting it on a VPS does not change those obligations.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Incorrect server URL or key, live streaming not enabled, or a connection problem. Copy the current URL and key from the Live Control Room, verify channel eligibility and activation, then check FFmpeg logs and VPS outbound connectivity.
The stream connects, then drops Network interruption, insufficient sustained egress, process failure or a failing source file. Check provider egress limits and traffic, inspect FFmpeg logs, verify that the source remains readable, and test the service manager’s restart behavior.
Video stutters or ingest is unstable Insufficient outbound headroom, competing traffic, or an unsuitable encoder profile. Measure sustained VPS egress, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% margin, and confirm the bitrate and keyframe settings for the chosen profile.
FFmpeg uses too much CPU The command is re-encoding a file that may already be compatible. Check source codecs and profile compatibility; use stream-copy mode if appropriate. If re-encoding is required, measure CPU load with the actual output settings.
The stream is live but no complete replay appears The broadcast exceeded 12 hours or archive capture did not complete. Use independent recording and keep sessions below 12 hours when the YouTube replay is important.
Audio or video is missing or wrong Source mapping, codec, audio track or output settings do not match the media and ingest profile. Inspect the input streams, adjust mapping and encoding options, then repeat a private or unlisted test and check the preview and watch page.
