Give each tab its own Playwright Page handle, bring that page to the state you want, and call page.screenshot() on it. A single BrowserContext can contain multiple pages, so you can capture several tabs in sequence or in parallel without switching the foreground tab. Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture for each image, and save each result under a distinct name.
How multi-tab screenshot capture works
In Playwright, a Page represents a browser tab or popup. A BrowserContext can contain multiple pages; screenshots are taken from the page handle you select, not from whichever tab happens to be visually active. Pages in the same context inherit its settings and emulation. See the official Playwright Pages guide and Page API reference.
The basic sequence is: create or connect to a browser, obtain a page handle for each tab, navigate or interact until the page is ready, then capture the intended scope from each handle. Keep a mapping between each handle and its URL or task label so images remain identifiable.
Use a dedicated context for a clean automation job
For an agent that should visit specified URLs without relying on your personal browser state, create a fresh context and open one page per URL. The following Node.js example uses Playwright’s documented context and page model and saves a full-page PNG per page. It is an implementation pattern, not a claim of hands-on testing.

})();Install Playwright and its browser binaries according to the official installation guide. Replace the example URLs with the pages the agent needs. domcontentloaded waits for the initial document parsing milestone; it does not guarantee that a single-page app, image, or other asynchronous content is ready. Add site-specific checks where needed before capture.
Make readiness specific to the page
Define what “ready” means for each site. If a results panel must appear, wait for that selector; if a particular interaction is required, perform it and verify the resulting state before screenshotting. A fixed delay can be useful for known animation or rendering delays, but it is not a universal readiness guarantee. For pages with different loading behavior, store readiness logic alongside each URL rather than applying one assumption to every tab.
Keep failures isolated and filenames unique
For production work, handle navigation and screenshot errors per page so one failed URL does not prevent captures from the remaining pages. Keep the page label or index in each output filename; otherwise, repeated writes to the same path can overwrite an earlier tab’s image. Record the URL with the output so the visual artifact can be checked against its intended page.

Choose what part of each tab to capture

Use a selector that identifies the intended element reliably; if it matches multiple elements, refine it or select the intended match explicitly. Playwright screenshot options also include masking matched elements. The Page API documentation describes page screenshots, including full-page and masking options.
Control format and pixel scale
Playwright’s Page screenshot API supports PNG, JPEG, and, where supported by the installed browser and API version, additional documented formats such as WebP through the agent-facing screenshot tooling. Screenshot tooling also exposes scale choices such as CSS-pixel versus device-pixel output. Check the documentation for the specific API and installed version before relying on a format or option. Larger device-scale images can contain more pixels and consume more storage and transfer bandwidth.
Use an AI agent to operate and inspect the tabs
An agent can use browser automation to navigate and interact, then use screenshots as visual evidence. For locating controls and acting on them, use the browser’s structured snapshot or accessibility information to obtain references; do not treat a screenshot as a reliable interaction locator. The Playwright MCP screenshot guidance describes screenshots as visual inspection and recommends browser snapshots for references used to interact with page elements.

For explicit scripted control, keep the mapping between task labels and page handles in the agent’s state. Agent-facing tooling can also provide tab listing, creation, selection, and screenshot commands; check the current Playwright command reference for the interface available in your setup. A screenshot from the wrong page can look plausible, so verify the captured image and its associated URL or label.
Decide whether the agent should use a personal browser profile
Use a new context when the task can run without your existing logins. If the task requires an already-authenticated session, connecting an agent to a personal browser profile is a broader access decision: Chrome’s auto-connect documentation says the agent may access open tabs, cookies, session storage, local storage, and information available through JavaScript APIs. Connect only when that state is necessary, and review the access model of the specific tool. Chrome’s statement that its local DevTools-for-agents server does not send browser data, session tokens, or telemetry to Google describes that implementation; it should not be generalized to other tools. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image shows the wrong page. Confirm the screenshot call uses the intended
Pagehandle and that the saved filename maps to that page’s URL or task label. - The screenshot is blank or missing content. The page may not have reached the state your task requires. Wait for a relevant selector or application-specific readiness condition, then capture again; a generic navigation milestone may be too early for asynchronously rendered content.
- Full-page output omits expected content. Verify that the content is part of the page’s scrollable document and has been loaded. Some sites load content only after scrolling or interaction, so perform that step before capturing.
- An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong component. Check that the selector exists and identifies the intended element on that page. Use a browser snapshot to find a stable reference, then refine the selector if it matches more than one element.
- One tab fails and the whole batch stops. Catch errors for each page separately, log its URL and failure, and continue with the remaining pages. Choose an explicit retry policy rather than retrying indefinitely.
- Images overwrite each other. Give every capture a unique path containing a page index, label, or other stable identifier.
- Capture takes too long or output is large. Capture only the viewport or target element when a full document is unnecessary; choose an appropriate output format and scale. Define timeouts and readiness checks according to the pages being captured.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Opening several pages in one context avoids managing a separate browser context for each page, while still allowing individual page capture. Running navigations concurrently can reduce total waiting time, but increases simultaneous browser work and may strain a machine or trigger site rate limits. Sequential screenshots make failure isolation and resource use easier to control. The right choice depends on page weight, available memory, and the target sites; there is no universal concurrency number established here.

Browser rendering can vary with page state, fonts, network resources, and site changes, so compare screenshots only when those conditions are meaningfully controlled. Browser automation has no per-image service price specified in the cited Playwright documentation; operational costs depend on where it runs and what resources that environment consumes.

When a managed browser is a better fit
If an agent needs a remotely managed browser session or CDP-based interaction rather than a local Playwright launch, a hosted browser runtime is another architecture to consider. Cloudflare documents browser tools for agent interaction over CDP in its Browser Run documentation. That establishes a technical option, not any particular partner or referral arrangement.
