Start by defining what “100 viewers” means: 100 people watching at the same time, 100 unique people who watched during a period, or 100 total views. Those are different goals, and subscriber or follower count is not a substitute for any of them.
This playbook focuses on actions a new or small creator can test on YouTube or Twitch, and on measuring what actually brings people in and keeps them watching.
Choose the 100-viewer goal you mean
Before planning a stream, decide which audience measure you want to grow. A concurrent viewer count is a live snapshot; unique viewers count people over a selected period; cumulative views count plays and may include repeat viewing. Set a target that matches the outcome you care about, and use the platform’s corresponding metric.
- 100 concurrent viewers: 100 people watching at the same time during the broadcast.
- 100 unique viewers: 100 distinct people who watched in the reporting period.
- 100 cumulative views: 100 total views, which may include more than one view from the same person.
YouTube notes that subscriber count does not show whether subscribers are still watching. Its guidance recommends unique viewers or monthly audience for a clearer view of active audience, and defines new viewers as people watching the channel for the first time in the selected period. Give each stream a clear promise
A prospective viewer should be able to tell from the title and thumbnail what the stream is about and why it may be worth clicking. Make the subject specific, communicate the value, and ensure the stream delivers what its packaging promises. Avoid vague titles or a dramatic thumbnail that misrepresents the content.
YouTube’s live analytics frames performance as a viewer journey: appeal (click-through rate), engagement (views), and satisfaction (average view duration). Treat these as diagnostic signals, not as a recipe that guarantees recommendations or a particular audience size. YouTube describes its recommendation system as aiming to offer viewers videos and channels they are likely to enjoy.
Bring in people beyond your existing audience
Test topics with a natural discovery path
Try subjects that can introduce new people to your regular program: a timely question, a useful demonstration, or a topic with a clear search or sharing angle. Seasonal or trending subjects can be worth testing when they genuinely fit your channel. One successful stream does not prove that everyone who found it will return; some viewers arrive for one specific answer and move on.

Collaborate with creators who share an audience
A collaboration can introduce each creator to the other’s community. Choose a format where both have a real contribution—such as a joint discussion, challenge, demonstration, or interview—and make the topic and each creator’s role clear in advance. Don’t treat a collaboration as a guaranteed transfer of viewers.

Share a stream where your intended audience already spends time, and use relevant community spaces without spamming them. On YouTube, review traffic sources to see whether viewers found a live stream through search, suggested videos, playlists, or external referrals. Search terms and top sources can suggest subjects or packaging to test next.
Give first-time viewers a reason to stay—and return
Build a repeatable format
When a topic or format works, consider turning it into a series. A recognizable structure helps returning viewers know what to expect and gives newcomers a simple way to understand the stream. Keep the channel’s subject or format reasonably consistent while leaving room to experiment.

Make participation part of the show
Welcome people who join, explain what is happening for late arrivals, and give viewers a meaningful way to contribute. Respond to comments and continue the conversation between streams. These practices can support community, but they cannot ensure that any particular viewer returns.
Build the relationship between broadcasts
Use community posts or other social channels to share what is coming up, invite questions, and follow up on a stream’s discussion. - Views: a measure of engagement with the live content.
- Average view duration: a clue to how long viewers stayed.
- Traffic sources and search terms: evidence of how viewers discovered the stream and which terms led them there.
Compare livestreams with other livestreams, not with videos in a different format. Record the topic, title and thumbnail, timing, format, and relevant results so one stream’s outcome does not become an unexamined assumption.
For Twitch
Use Twitch Creator Camp to learn about analytics and the platform’s community-building tools. The reviewed Creator Camp resources identify learning paths in these areas, but do not establish a comparable, universal set of early-growth metrics or a best platform for reaching 100. Choose measures that match your goal—concurrent, unique, or cumulative—and use the information Twitch provides for your channel.

- Set one measurable target. Choose concurrent viewers, unique viewers, or cumulative views, and define the time period where relevant.
- Write down a clear stream promise. Make the subject and viewer benefit easy to understand; ensure the content matches the title and thumbnail.
- Choose one way to reach beyond regulars. Test a discoverable topic, a relevant collaboration, or a suitable external sharing path.
- Deliver a repeatable, participatory show. Welcome newcomers, make the format legible, and give people a reason to join in.
- Review the relevant analytics after the stream. On YouTube, inspect impressions, click-through rate, views, average view duration, and traffic sources.
- Change one thing for the next comparable stream. Keep what is working and test a single sensible adjustment so you can learn what may have influenced the result.
There is no evidence-backed universal streaming frequency or timeline for reaching 100. Pick a cadence you can sustain, then assess results across comparable broadcasts rather than treating a single stream as a verdict.
