First determine what is drifting: audio relative to video, the whole stream relative to real time, or playback on a particular device. Those symptoms can sound alike but need different fixes. For genuine audio-to-video drift, inspect input timestamps and clock sources before changing settings; test -af aresample=async=1 only when audio samples are not keeping up with meaningful timestamps. A sample-rate conversion or a starting-time adjustment alone will not fix every accumulating offset.

Identify the kind of drift before changing FFmpeg

Compare the start of the stream with a later point and note what changes. Record whether audio leads or trails, whether the offset grows steadily or appears all at once, and which player or device shows it.

  • Audio moves relative to video over time: suspect timestamp handling or a difference between the audio and video clock rates. The pattern is a clue, not proof of a single cause.
  • Audio and video stay together but the stream falls farther behind real time: investigate growing delivery or playback latency, not just audio synchronization.
  • The symptom changes with the playback device: compare another player or device before altering the stream. Playback behavior can be part of the apparent problem.
  • The same offset is present from the beginning and stays steady: this is a fixed starting offset, distinct from a mismatch that accumulates during a long run.
  • The offset jumps suddenly: look for a timestamp discontinuity, input interruption, or other event at that point in the logs.

Do not use “audio drift” to mean every kind of delay. A fix for separate inputs that start at different times is not automatically a fix for independent clocks whose rates diverge.

Capture a useful baseline

Before editing the command, preserve enough detail to compare a clean start with the point when the problem becomes apparent. Keep the full FFmpeg command and logs, and note the FFmpeg version and build. FFmpeg’s online documentation changes over time, so verify option availability and syntax against the installed build.

  • Note each input type, audio sample rate and channel layout, output audio codec and sample rate, and relevant video settings.
  • Mark when the stream starts, when you first notice a problem, whether the offset grows or jumps, and the player or device used to observe it.
  • For separate live inputs, find out whether their timestamps derive from a common clock. Do not assume that two inputs share one just because they are part of the same stream.

For a timing-aware observation, FFplay can report audio/video synchronization drift. Use its statistics to compare the beginning and a later point instead of relying on one playback impression. Its master-clock setting is mainly a debugging option, not a general repair.

Choose a correction that matches the cause

Approach Use it when What it does Important limitation
aresample=async=... Audio sample counts do not follow meaningful timestamps Changes audio timing by stretching or squeezing, or fills or trims samples Does not establish that upstream timestamps are correct; careless use can conceal an input problem.
-isync Two live inputs have comparable timestamps but different start times Offsets the target input using the difference between input start times For expected results, the timestamp sources should derive from the same clock. It aligns starts, not an ongoing clock-rate mismatch.
Output sample-rate configuration You need to match the intended delivery format Converts or encodes audio at the selected output rate A correct output rate does not by itself repair timestamp drift.
Correct the timestamp or clock source Inspection points to bad timestamps or independent timing Addresses the underlying timebase or capture architecture The right change depends on the specific source, device, and logs.

Test timestamp-following audio correction

FFmpeg’s Resampler Documentation describes async as “simple 1 parameter audio sync to timestamps using stretching, squeezing, filling and trimming.” The option is documented as 0 by default, meaning no compensation is applied. A controlled diagnostic test is to add -af aresample=async=1 to the audio filter chain, then compare measured drift at the start and later in a sustained run.

The async value controls the maximum number of samples changed per second; larger values permit more correction. The appropriate value depends on the measured error and the source, so do not increase it by guesswork. Keep the change only if it stops accumulating drift without audible artifacts, discontinuities, or unwanted latency changes. If the timestamps are wrong, following them may hide rather than fix the upstream problem.

Align separate inputs only when their clocks support it

FFmpeg’s -isync option offsets a target input based on the difference in the inputs’ start times. It can help when separate live inputs have a meaningful shared timebase and merely begin at different times. It is not continuous correction for clocks that run at different rates.

Input options are sensitive to command ordering and FFmpeg version. Consult the installed build’s documentation for the correct placement and target/source input ordering before changing a production command. If the sources do not share a clock, a start-time adjustment cannot make them remain synchronized indefinitely. Likewise, forcing timestamps to wall clock is not a general guarantee that a faulty or independent source clock will be repaired.

Match YouTube’s audio format, then keep monitoring

YouTube Help’s live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, specify 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround audio. Choose the rate that matches the channel layout and intended configuration. These are output-format recommendations, not explanations for every long-running drift problem; sample-rate conversion alone does not prove synchronization is fixed.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. For a meditation program, use representative material and run it long enough to see whether synchronization changes. A still image or low-motion visual can make an audio/video offset harder to notice, so check against a visible, repeatable timing cue where possible.

Run a controlled troubleshooting test

  1. Classify and document the symptom. Note which direction audio moves, whether the difference grows, jumps, or stays fixed, whether overall latency increases, and which playback device shows it.
  2. Save the baseline. Keep the full command, FFmpeg version/build, input and output details, and logs from the start and a later point when the issue is visible.
  3. Observe synchronization over time. Use FFplay statistics or another timestamp-aware method to compare drift at multiple points; do not treat a single reading as a long-run result.
  4. Check input clocks and timestamps. Establish whether separate inputs share a clock. Consider -isync for a start-time difference only when the timestamp relationship supports it.
  5. Change one variable. If audio samples appear not to match their timestamps, test aresample=async=1 in a controlled run. If only the output format is wrong, correct the sample rate without claiming that this repairs drift.
  6. Repeat the sustained comparison. Keep the change only if later measurements show the accumulating offset has stopped and audio remains clean, without new discontinuities or undesirable latency changes.

Common failure patterns and what to do

The offset grows even with -isync

-isync addresses a difference in start time, not a continuing clock-rate mismatch. Recheck whether the inputs’ timestamp sources share a clock; if they do not, investigate the capture or timestamp architecture rather than repeatedly changing the start offset.

aresample=async=1 makes no measurable difference

Confirm that the audio filter is applied to the intended stream and that the timestamps being followed are meaningful. If the symptom is growing end-to-end latency, device-specific playback delay, or faulty timestamps, this filter may not address the cause.

The setting stops drift but audio sounds altered

Do not assume a larger async value is better. Its value controls the maximum sample correction per second. Recheck the measured error and source timing, then compare a lower or appropriate correction in another sustained test; reject changes that introduce audible artifacts.

The stream uses the recommended sample rate but still drifts

A delivery rate such as 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 is a format choice, not a clock repair. Return to timestamp and clock inspection and compare synchronization over time.

Only one player or device seems out of sync

Repeat the observation on another player or playback device and distinguish the received stream’s timing from local playback behavior before altering the encoder command.

The documentation does not match the installed FFmpeg

FFmpeg options can vary by version and build. Check the option syntax and behavior for the installed version, and include that exact version/build when asking for help.

When a generic fix is not enough

The right correction cannot be prescribed without the command, input devices, operating system, FFmpeg build, and logs. If the sequence above does not isolate the cause, share those details along with the observed direction and timing of the offset, whether the inputs are separate, and the player or device used to detect it. That information helps distinguish bad timestamps, unrelated clocks, fixed start offsets, and growing stream latency.
