For a simple 24/7 YouTube channel, start by evaluating a Google Cloud Compute Engine E2 virtual machine (VM), then test it with the exact stream workload before settling on a size. E2 is Google’s cost-optimized general-purpose VM family, but its shared-core options time-share CPU; the smallest VM is not automatically enough if you encode or composite video on it.
This guide covers the cloud-VM setup decisions that matter: machine sizing, Mumbai versus Delhi, cost components, YouTube ingest settings, and recovery planning. It is an architecture guide, not a tested deployment or an invoice estimate.
Which Google Cloud VM should you start with?
Use an E2 VM as the first candidate for a lightweight continuous stream, especially when it mainly plays or forwards pre-encoded video. Google describes E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose family. Shared-core E2 machines time-share CPU, however, and the available guidance does not establish which size can reliably encode a particular resolution or frame rate.
Choose based on what the VM actually has to do:
- Play or forward pre-encoded video: begin by evaluating an E2 shared-core option and measure CPU and memory headroom during a representative stream.
- Encode, transcode, or composite scenes in real time: run an extended test at the target resolution and frame rate. Watch CPU, memory, and dropped frames, then resize if the workload does not remain stable.
Do not treat a machine-family recommendation as a performance guarantee. Test the intended encoder, source file, audio, stream bitrate, and reconnect behavior together before relying on the VM for a continuous channel. Google Cloud’s E2 documentation describes the family and its pricing characteristics.

How should you choose between Mumbai and Delhi?
Google lists E2 availability in both Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). Compare the two regions using your intended billing account and VM configuration in the Google Cloud Pricing Calculator, then test the actual ingest path to YouTube. Geographic proximity alone does not establish which region will deliver the more stable or faster feed for your connection.
Compare measured stream health and calculator estimates for the same machine, disk, and operating assumptions. No universal cheapest or fastest choice between these regions is established without account-specific pricing and workload-specific testing.
How to estimate the monthly cost
Model the bill as separate components rather than looking only at the VM’s hourly rate:

- VM runtime: the selected machine’s compute charges for the hours it runs.
- Boot and persistent disks: include the storage you attach and retain.
- Outbound network transfer: estimate data sent to viewers or other destinations, based on the architecture and traffic.
- Other services: add any monitoring, storage, or networking services your design uses.
Google’s current free-tier overview, accessed in 2026, lists an allowance equivalent to one e2-micro VM for the total hours in a month, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of monthly outbound data transfer. These are limited allowances, not a promise that a 24/7 streaming setup will be free: the selected VM may not fit the allowance, and sustained video transfer can exceed 1 GB. Check eligibility and current regional rates in the calculator before estimating a rupee total. See Google Cloud’s free-tier details.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Discounts and interruption risk
E2 VMs do not receive sustained-use discounts. Google states: “The E2 machine series doesn’t offer sustained use discounts (SUDs); however, it provides consistently low on-demand and committed-use pricing.” E2 is eligible for commitment discount options, but compare those only after the workload and region are stable, and verify the current terms and your account’s eligibility. Do not apply a maximum sustained-use discount to a full-month E2 estimate. Google’s sustained-use discount documentation explains the exclusion.
Spot VMs can cost less but may be interrupted. They are not the safe default when the aim is continuous operation. Consider them only if your restart and recovery design can tolerate interruption.

What YouTube ingest settings should you use?
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the starting point for the feed sent from the VM. These are ingest recommendations, not proof that a given machine or network can sustain them.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS recommended | Configure the encoder to use RTMPS where supported. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Set a constant target bitrate and verify the encoder is not varying it unexpectedly. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set a 2-second interval unless a specific workflow requires otherwise. |
| H.264 at 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended | Use as the starting ingest bitrate, then check stream health and network headroom. |
| H.264 at 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended | Use as the starting ingest bitrate, then check stream health and network headroom. |
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewing formats, so the ingest resolution does not mean you must create every playback rendition yourself. Leave dependable upload headroom above the selected bitrate and test the real feed; the bitrate recommendation does not certify the VM’s network path. Guidance and figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings help page, accessed in 2026.

How to validate a 24/7 setup before relying on it
- Choose a candidate region and E2 configuration. Compare Mumbai and Delhi in the pricing calculator using the intended billing account and machine configuration.
- Run the actual workload for an extended test. Use the target resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate. Check CPU and memory headroom, dropped frames, audio, and stream health rather than assuming the VM size is sufficient.
- Test network interruptions and reconnects. Confirm the encoder reconnects as expected after an interruption and that the stream resumes without manual intervention.
- Estimate the full bill. Include compute, boot and persistent disks, outbound transfer, and any other services. Recheck current regional rates and free-tier eligibility.
- Observe before depending on it. Monitor the stream through the test period and document a recovery procedure for VM or zone problems.
What can fail, and what should you check?
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames during encoding | CPU capacity or workload load | Check CPU use and dropped frames at the target resolution and frame rate; resize and repeat the test if headroom is inadequate. |
| Stream disconnects or does not resume | Network interruption or encoder reconnect behavior | Test a controlled interruption and verify reconnect behavior; monitor the live stream and establish a recovery procedure. |
| Stream health is poor despite an adequate VM | Ingest bitrate, keyframe interval, protocol, or network path | Check RTMPS, CBR, the two-second keyframe setting, and upload headroom; test the actual feed rather than infer performance from region choice. |
| Unexpectedly high bill | Transfer, disk, runtime, or discount assumptions | Review each billing component in the calculator. Do not count on sustained-use discounts for E2 or assume free-tier transfer covers continuous video. |
What reliability can a single VM provide?
A single VM is a single point of failure. A continuous-stream design needs process supervision and restart behavior, alerts, a tested reconnect strategy, and a recovery plan for VM or zone problems. A second encoder or failover design may make sense if the cost of an outage justifies the added complexity and spend.
No end-to-end uptime guarantee is established for this single-VM architecture. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but that guidance does not certify a Google Cloud setup or its availability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VM and its recovery path is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo’s monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
