YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 720p30 live ingestion is 3 Mbps; the 3,000–4,000 kbps range is a practical test setting, not a BSNL-specific guarantee. The right bitrate depends on the stable upload capacity of your particular BSNL connection, so test the actual playlist before relying on it.
Recommended OBS settings for a first test
| Setting | Starting value |
|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×720 |
| Frame rate | 30 fps |
| Video encoder | H.264 |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Video bitrate | 3,000–4,000 kbps; begin near YouTube’s 3 Mbps recommendation if upload capacity is uncertain |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds |
This is a cautious baseline for a playlist stream, especially one with slides, text, or slow movement. A faster-moving playlist can benefit from more bitrate, but only increase it when the connection sustains the higher rate and OBS does not show growing dropped frames. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709.
How much bitrate YouTube recommends
YouTube’s live H.264 ingest recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not proof that any particular BSNL line can sustain them reliably.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube H.264 minimum recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Its live guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, which must not exceed four seconds. For broad compatibility, start with H.264, CBR, AAC stereo, and RTMPS where available. These live ingest settings are distinct from recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.

Set up the playlist stream in OBS
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube, and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Set bitrate and output. In Settings → Output, select the streaming video bitrate and audio bitrate. Set audio to AAC stereo at 128 kbps. OBS advises choosing a video bitrate that fits both stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits.
- Set resolution and frame rate. In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 and Common FPS Value to 30. OBS distinguishes the canvas resolution from the scaled output resolution, so check the output field rather than assuming the canvas setting determines what viewers receive.
- Set encoding behavior. Use H.264, CBR rate control, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose RTMPS in the stream connection settings if it is available for the selected YouTube service.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the same playlist, audio, and movement you intend to stream. Check YouTube’s stream health in the Live Control Room and OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame count. YouTube recommends testing with similar video movement and audio before an event.
Adapt the bitrate to your BSNL upload
There is no single verified upload speed or OBS bitrate for every BSNL broadband or Bharat Fiber subscriber. The usable upload can vary with plan, location, access technology, Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, and time of day. An advertised download rate does not establish the upload capacity available to a live stream.
- Run a speed test over the connection you will actually use, preferably at the time of day you expect to stream. Treat the result as a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Use stable upload capacity—not the download figure—to choose a bitrate. OBS troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when adjusting for connection problems. Treat that only as an initial ceiling: audio, protocol overhead, household traffic, and fluctuations also need room.
- Test the real playlist privately or unlisted. A sustained test to YouTube is more informative than a single speed-test result because it includes the actual stream and connection path.
- Choose the highest setting that passes the test with headroom. Compare resolution, frame rate, playlist motion, and measured stable upload capacity rather than relying on the broadband plan’s advertised speed.
Fix dropped frames and unstable stream health
- OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades: Lower the OBS video bitrate first, then repeat the same test. If it still struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate from 720p30 and test again.
- Speed test looks fast, but the stream still drops frames: A speed test is a momentary measurement. Upload variation, Wi-Fi, congestion, and other traffic can affect a sustained stream. Test at the intended time and connection, then leave more upload headroom by lowering bitrate.
- 720p60 or 1080p is unstable: Those modes have different platform bitrate recommendations. Do not assume a higher advertised download speed is enough; step back to 720p30 and establish a stable baseline before raising resolution or frame rate.
- OBS output does not match the intended dimensions: Verify Output (Scaled) Resolution in Settings → Video. The canvas and scaled output are separate settings.
- YouTube does not accept the stream configuration: Check that the keyframe interval is two seconds and no more than four seconds, rate control is CBR, and the selected encoder and connection type are supported.
Playlist and YouTube checks before going live
A stable encoder configuration does not itself establish that playlist content is permitted or suitable for a live broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before starting. A private test checks technical stability; it does not grant rights to the music or video in the playlist.

When OBS is the right fit
OBS is a useful choice when you want to control a local playlist, scene, or other desktop sources and your computer and connection can remain available for the stream. Keep the playlist, audio, output settings, and network conditions consistent between test and broadcast so the test remains relevant.
