If YouTube says your stream key is invalid, copy the key for the new stream from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder’s Stream Key field. Copy the separate Stream URL into the encoder’s server or URL field. If the key may be stale, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder.
1. Check the key and Stream URL for the new stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then choose Stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key shown for the new stream and paste it into your encoder’s Stream Key field.
- Copy the stream’s Stream URL separately and paste it into the encoder’s server or URL field.
The key and URL are different values: do not paste the key into the server field or the URL into the key field. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and enter both.
2. Replace a stale or compromised key
If the encoder may still have an old key saved, or you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in the key section of Live Control Room. Then replace the saved value in the encoder with the newly generated key before trying again. Resetting invalidates the old key, so any encoder or service using it must be updated.
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See Manage live stream settings.

3. Verify RTMPS settings if you use that protocol
For an RTMPS connection, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP URL is correct. YouTube says the lock icon in Live Control Room provides the RTMPS URL. Confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS and that its protocol and server settings are configured for RTMPS. The YouTube RTMPS guide covers these settings.
4. If the key and URL are correct but the connection still fails
- Update the encoder. YouTube recommends using the latest version when troubleshooting an encoder-start error.
- Read the encoder’s output or dashboard. Check for a more specific connection or configuration error, then follow the encoder maker’s support guidance.
- Test outbound internet connectivity. If the encoder settings look healthy but it cannot connect reliably, test your connection and contact your internet service provider if the test shows a problem.
- If the software signs in instead of asking for a key, contact that software’s support team. It may need an update to work with YouTube Live.
YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide covers encoder and connection checks, including software that does not use a manually supplied stream key.

5. Distinguish an invalid-key error from a stream-health warning
Check the wording and timestamp in Live Control Room’s Health Indicator. A stream-format or video-configuration warning points to a different issue from an invalid stream key; follow the specific message rather than repeatedly changing a key that is already correct. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
