Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() with type: 'webp'. Give it a .webp path to save the image, or omit path to receive the encoded image as a Node.js Buffer.
Save a webpage screenshot as WebP
Install Playwright and its browser, then run this script. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture.

})();The type option selects WebP explicitly. Playwright also infers the image type from the path extension when one is supplied, but setting type: 'webp' makes the intent clear. PNG is the default if no type or recognizable path extension determines another format. See the Playwright Page API.
Return the image as a Buffer instead of writing a file
Remove path when you want to send the image to another function, upload it, or otherwise process it in memory. page.screenshot() resolves to a Buffer containing the encoded WebP bytes:

Quality and lossless output
Playwright’s quality option accepts values from 0 to 100. For WebP, the documented default of 100 produces a lossless image; lower values use lossy compression. A lower setting may suit delivery when some image detail can be traded away, but the resulting file size depends on the page and capture. Measure on your own pages rather than assuming a particular reduction.

});A full-page capture can be much taller than a viewport capture. Use it when the complete document is required; otherwise, capture the viewport to keep the image focused on what is currently visible.
CSS pixels or device pixels
scale controls output pixel sizing. 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, while 'device' captures device pixels and is the default. Device-pixel output can be larger on high-DPI displays. Set the option explicitly if predictable dimensions matter:

Use a locator’s screenshot method when you need a component rather than the page. Playwright scrolls the element into view before capturing it. For a scrollable container, the screenshot includes only the content currently scrolled into view.

});Make repeated captures more stable
Screenshot options include disabling animations and applying a stylesheet to hide or alter dynamic elements. These controls can reduce variation from page effects, but do not guarantee pixel-identical output across different browser or operating-system environments. Playwright notes that rendering may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

Use WebP for visual regression tests
For a test snapshot rather than a standalone image file, Playwright Test supports WebP with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.webp'). WebP test snapshots are lossless. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the result, and this API requires the Playwright test runner.

Troubleshoot common issues
- The file is not WebP: Set
type: 'webp'and use a.webpfilename. If you provide neither an explicit type nor an extension Playwright can use, PNG is the default. - The script cannot launch Chromium: Install the browser with
npx playwright install chromium. If you use another Playwright-supported browser, install that browser instead. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check that navigation reached the intended page before capturing, and allow the page’s required content to appear. The screenshot API captures what the browser has rendered at capture time; a capture call alone does not ensure that asynchronous content has finished loading.
- The output is unexpectedly large: Check whether you requested
fullPage: trueor leftscaleat its device-pixel default. If lossy output is acceptable, choose a lowerqualityand compare the result visually; file-size savings are page-dependent. - The visual test changes between runs: Keep the browser and operating-system environment consistent, and reduce dynamic content or animations where appropriate. Differences can arise from rendering conditions, not just application code.
