You can use a Synology NAS to store a property-tour video, then have a separate encoder read that file and send a repeating live feed to YouTube. The NAS does not automatically turn a video file into a YouTube Live stream: you need encoder software that supports looping a local or network-hosted file, plus a stable internet connection and a YouTube stream URL and key. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station broadcast feature selects a camera feed, not a prerecorded video file, so do not treat it as a file-looping solution.

What you need—and what the NAS does

In this setup, the NAS is file storage. An encoder performs the playback and streaming work: it repeatedly reads the tour video, encodes or packages the feed as required, and sends it to YouTube Live. The encoder could run on a separate computer that can access a NAS share, or potentially in a container on a compatible Synology NAS.

The available official Synology and YouTube documentation does not establish a particular Synology model, container image, or application as a reliable prerecorded-file looper. Treat those as configuration choices to verify, not as a guaranteed NAS feature. Before committing to a setup, identify your NAS model and DSM version, the video’s format and audio needs, and the encoder’s file-looping and restart behavior.

Camera broadcast is not prerecorded playback

Synology Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast instructions describe selecting a camera source to send to YouTube. That is a camera-to-live-stream workflow; it does not demonstrate that Surveillance Station can repeatedly play a property-tour file. If your source is a finished video, choose an encoder that explicitly supports prerecorded-file looping instead.

Check whether your NAS can run a container

Synology Container Manager is available only on supported models. Check Synology’s compatibility information for your exact NAS and DSM version before planning to run an encoder in a container. Even if the NAS supports containers, you still need a suitable encoder application and must validate file access, playback looping, YouTube output, and restart behavior.

Choose where the encoder will run

Separate computer reading from a NAS share

A computer can access the tour file over your local network while encoder software sends the live feed to YouTube. This separates file storage from video processing, but the computer, encoder process, network connection to the NAS, and internet connection all need to remain available. Confirm that the software can loop a file from a network share rather than assuming local-file support covers it.

Compatible container on the Synology NAS

A container-based encoder may avoid keeping a separate computer running, but it depends on model and software compatibility. Verify Container Manager support for your NAS, then confirm the chosen container can access the video, repeat it without interruption, send a YouTube Live stream, and recover as you expect after a process or network interruption. The official pages cited here do not validate a specific container recipe.

Compare the practical requirements

Option What it does What you must verify
Surveillance Station Live Broadcast Broadcasts a selected camera stream, according to Synology’s documented workflow. It is not documented as a prerecorded-file looper.
Encoder on a computer Can potentially read a video from a NAS share and send it to YouTube. File-looping support, network-share access, sustained computer operation, and restart behavior. The cited official sources do not validate a specific application.
Encoder in a NAS container Can potentially run on a compatible NAS without a separate encoder computer. Exact NAS and DSM support, container and file access, loop behavior, stream output, and recovery. No particular configuration is established by the cited sources.

Prepare the YouTube channel and tour video

Confirm live-stream eligibility

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the property-tour schedule rather than immediately before the planned start.

Check the video before you configure the encoder

  • Confirm the encoder supports the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Watch the end-to-start transition: a loop can visibly jump, repeat a silent gap, or cut off narration if the file was not prepared for a seamless restart.
  • Ensure you have the rights needed to stream the footage, music, voiceover, and any other included material. A property-tour video can contain material owned by someone else even when you filmed the property yourself.
  • Check YouTube’s current live-streaming policies and monetization rules for your channel and content. Do not assume that permission to use a recording guarantees monetization or that a repeated stream is exempt from copyright or reused-content rules.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses those values to connect the encoder to the broadcast.
  2. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the encoder you control, do not publish or share it, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
  3. Choose an encoder that explicitly supports file looping. Confirm it can read the file from the selected location (NAS share or container-accessible storage), repeat playback, and send a YouTube Live feed. Also check how it handles an unavailable share, a video playback error, or an encoder restart.
  4. Set the stream destination and protocol. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; use it if the encoder and workflow support it. Codec choices documented by YouTube include H.264, H.265, and AV1, but your encoder must support the chosen codec and YouTube ingest workflow.
  5. Match output settings to the source and bandwidth. Set a resolution and frame rate that the source and encoder can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; that figure is for that codec and mode, not a universal bitrate or minimum. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Check the specific guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying the 1080p30 figure to another mode.
  6. Configure looping and audio. Enable repeat or loop playback in the encoder, if supported, and confirm that audio is present and at a usable level throughout the file. Do not assume a playlist or loop option exists in every encoder.
  7. Preview and test before the scheduled broadcast. Use an unlisted test or another appropriate test configuration. Verify the picture, audio, loop transition, YouTube preview, and stream health; confirm the NAS share remains reachable if the encoder reads over the network.
  8. Start the live feed and monitor it. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indications after starting. Observe at least one loop transition and watch for dropped connection, stalled playback, audio loss, or encoder errors before relying on the setup unattended.

Plan for continuous operation and the YouTube archive

A 24/7 loop depends on every part of the chain staying healthy: the file must remain accessible, the encoder must keep playing and transmitting, and the internet connection must sustain the selected bitrate. For a computer-based encoder, that means accounting for power, sleep settings, operating-system restarts, and application recovery. For a container, validate the same concerns along with NAS and container restart behavior. The official documentation cited here does not establish that either arrangement will recover automatically in every failure case.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous loop will be preserved as one complete archive; check YouTube’s current archive behavior and plan separate recording or archive handling if a complete long-running copy matters.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a signal Incorrect stream URL or key, unsupported protocol, or encoder not actively sending. Recheck the values in Live Control Room and the encoder, confirm the selected RTMPS or other supported workflow, and verify the encoder is running.
Video file will not play Unsupported codec, file access issue, or a network share/container path the encoder cannot read. Test the file in the encoder on the host that runs it; confirm permissions and the exact mounted or shared path.
The video plays once and stops Looping is not enabled or the selected application does not support repeating a prerecorded file. Confirm explicit file-loop support and enable it; test a complete end-to-start transition before going live.
Stream health degrades or disconnects Insufficient sustained upload capacity, unstable network, or a bitrate too high for the connection. Measure the available upload capacity during expected operating conditions, reduce the output bitrate if necessary, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
Picture is unstable or YouTube rejects the feed Encoder settings may not match the codec, frame rate, resolution, or ingest workflow. Match settings to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and to the encoder’s supported output formats; test again before a public stream.
The stream does not restart after a failure Recovery behavior may not be configured or supported by the chosen encoder/container setup. Check the application’s restart settings and conduct a controlled recovery test. Do not assume unattended restart behavior without verifying it.
The archive is incomplete or split The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition or archive behavior differed from expectations. For a complete long-running recording, arrange and test a separate recording or archive workflow.

Will a YouTube Live stream longer than 12 hours be archived as one video?

YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours, so a single complete archive for a longer loop should not be assumed.
