Puppeteer disables browser extensions by default. For a standard screenshot, keep its default launch arguments, open the page, and call page.screenshot(); do not enable extensions or remove the default flag. The example below uses Puppeteer v25.12.0 documentation and captures a full-page PNG.
Capture a webpage with extensions disabled
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project if it is not already installed, then run this ES module example:

}The documented Puppeteer workflow is to launch a browser, create a page, navigate to the target, take a screenshot, and close the browser. The finally block ensures the browser is closed even if navigation or capture throws an error.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation says it passes the --disable-extensions flag by default. For ordinary extension-free captures, leave launch arguments alone and do not set enableExtensions. The launch-options reference cautions that removing Puppeteer’s defaults is generally unnecessary.

Choose what to capture and when
Viewport, full page, or a region
page.screenshot()withoutfullPagecaptures the current viewport;fullPagedefaults tofalse.- Set
fullPage: trueto request a capture of the full page. - Use the
clipoption to capture a specified rectangular region, or use the documentedElementHandle.screenshot()method to capture a particular element.
The screenshot options reference documents path, type, fullPage, clip, and captureBeyondViewport. The default image type is PNG. If type is omitted, Puppeteer can infer the image type from the path extension.
Navigation wait condition
The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', a condition shown in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide. It is a navigation wait condition, not a guarantee that every site’s asynchronous content, animations, or late-loading elements have finished rendering. For pages with a known target element, wait for that selector before capture; choose the wait strategy to match the page rather than assuming network activity alone means the screenshot is ready.

Headless mode and debugging
In Puppeteer v25.12.0, headless: true is the default, so the browser runs without a visible window. Use headless: false when you need to inspect browser behavior interactively while debugging. The documented headless: 'shell' option uses the older chrome-headless-shell mode. Puppeteer’s guide notes that this mode does not completely match regular Chrome, though it can be more performant for automation that does not need the full feature set.
Extension policy conflicts and launch arguments
There is one relevant exception to the default: Chrome policy may require particular extensions. Puppeteer warns that its default --disable-extensions flag can make launch fail when such policies are active. Its documented workaround is enableExtensions: true, or an array of unpacked extension paths. That changes the extension behavior and is not the configuration to use when the goal is to keep extensions disabled.

args adds browser command-line arguments. ignoreDefaultArgs can filter Puppeteer’s defaults, but use it cautiously: if you remove --disable-extensions, you no longer have the same extension-disabled setup. For version-sensitive launch behavior, check the LaunchOptions documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.
Troubleshooting
- Browser fails to launch under managed Chrome policy: A policy requiring extensions may conflict with the default disabled-extensions flag. If the managed environment requires those extensions, use the documented
enableExtensionsoption; do not apply it when extensions must remain disabled. - Screenshot appears incomplete:
networkidle2does not prove all asynchronous page content has rendered. Wait for the relevant selector or use a delay appropriate to the page before capturing. - Screenshot shows only the visible area: Set
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture, or useclipor an element screenshot when only a specific area is needed. - Unexpected launch behavior after changing arguments: Remove unnecessary
ignoreDefaultArgsfiltering and retain Puppeteer’s defaults, including--disable-extensions.
