First identify which frames are dropping: OBS network drops point to an unstable or insufficient connection to YouTube; rendering lag and encoding lag point to limits on the computer doing the streaming. Then check YouTube’s stream-health message and change the setting or part of the setup it identifies. The official guidance is platform-wide, not India-specific: the right fix depends on your ISP, location, connection, encoder settings and logs.
Identify the kind of frame problem
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch which counter increases while the problem occurs. Save an OBS log covering the affected period, and note the exact time. Also open YouTube Live Control Room and record the stream-health message. These clues distinguish three problems that can look similar to viewers:
- Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot maintain a reliable connection to the ingest server at the configured bitrate. The cause may be the local network, the ISP connection or routing beyond your home.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: the computer is not rendering frames quickly enough, often because its GPU or other resources are under load.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the computer or encoder cannot encode the video quickly enough at the selected settings.
Choppy playback does not always mean the broadcaster dropped frames. Viewer-side buffering can occur even when OBS is not reporting network drops; compare the OBS counters with YouTube’s health status before changing encoder settings.
Fix rising network-dropped frames
1. Test upload capacity and stability
Test upload performance during the hours when the 24/7 stream tends to have trouble, not just once at a convenient time. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof the connection will sustain the same upload continuously. Choose a stream bitrate the connection can hold reliably, with room for variation.

For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these reference points:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular broadband plan or connection can sustain the stream. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges by codec, resolution and frame rate. If network drops continue, lower the bitrate first; if needed, test a lower resolution. Check the resulting picture before settling on the change.
2. Isolate the local network path
If OBS is streaming over Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming over unstable Wi-Fi. Use an existing known-good cable and a direct, simple route through the router or modem where possible. A faulty cable, router, modem, network card, switch or extender can interrupt the connection. Replace equipment only after a controlled test points to it; a new cable will not correct ISP congestion or an encoder bottleneck.

Temporarily test whether a VPN, security inspection, network optimizer or outdated network driver is interfering. Change one factor at a time, and restore security protection after the test; correct only the specific interference you identify. OBS lists these as possible contributors, not universal causes.

If wired tests and local equipment checks do not resolve the drops, contact your ISP. Provide timestamps, OBS logs, YouTube health messages, your connection type and the upload tests you ran. OBS notes that congestion or routing changes outside the creator’s control may require ISP attention. For an India-based channel, investigate the provider and connection serving your location; the available official guidance does not establish a country-wide cause, an ISP ranking or a special bitrate requirement for India.
4. Check transport and keyframe settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Align these settings with the encoder and stream configuration you selected. Avoid changing multiple settings at once, so you can tell which change affects the symptom.

Fix rendering or encoding lag
Network equipment will not fix a local rendering or encoding bottleneck. Reduce unnecessary GPU work, close applications consuming system resources, and simplify scenes and filters. If the source material allows it, lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. For a mostly static ambient scene, a lower frame rate may be worth testing, but check that motion remains acceptable and that the output is stable.
Make one change, test the stream and watch the relevant OBS counter. If rendering or encoding lag remains, review system load and the selected encoder settings before changing the network path.
Respond to YouTube stream-health messages
Use the named health issue to guide the next check rather than changing several settings blindly. YouTube’s LiveStream configuration guidance describes issues involving high or low bitrate, codec, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe interval, mismatches between primary and backup streams, and video ingestion starvation.

- Bitrate too high or too low: compare the configured bitrate with the selected resolution, frame rate and codec, then adjust as needed.
- Codec, frame rate or keyframe warning: verify the encoder’s actual output matches the settings selected for the YouTube stream.
- Primary/backup mismatch: check that both streams use compatible configuration where a backup stream is in use.
- Video ingestion starvation: YouTube describes this as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Check whether the encoder or connection is delivering video consistently.
Validate before restoring 24/7 operation
- Reproduce representative conditions. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and movement similar to the actual ambient stream.
- Change one likely cause at a time. Record the setting or hardware change and the time of each test.
- Monitor both sides. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test, and save any messages that appear.
- Keep a diagnostic record. Note bitrate, resolution, frame rate, connection type, OBS counters, health messages and timestamps. This gives your ISP or technical support something actionable if the issue recurs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the problem is a local computer or home connection that must stay active to play the loop, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This moves playback operations off your computer, but cannot guarantee a better route from your ISP to YouTube.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
