To loop a guided sleep meditation playlist on YouTube Live with OBS, add your files as an OBS VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and verify the preview and audio before going live. For a single video, a Media Source with Loop enabled is simpler. A loop only repeats your media; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream or give you rights to use the content.
Before you set up the stream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to go live. Set up the encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Scheduling it in advance gives you time to configure and check the stream before its planned start. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance describes the channel requirements.
- Use audio and video you created or have permission to livestream publicly and retain in an archive, if you plan to keep one.
- Make sure your computer can play the files and your internet connection can sustain the stream bitrate.
- Allow time for a test run, including the transition from the end of the playlist back to its beginning.
Choose how OBS will loop the meditation
One video file: Media Source
Use this when one recording contains the full meditation or music you want to repeat. OBS’s Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, WAV, and OGG. In the source properties, select the file and enable Loop; OBS then starts the file again when playback finishes. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Several files: VLC Video playlist
Use a VLC Video source to play a sequence of files. Add the files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist (documented as on by default). VLC must be installed; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. If the source is unavailable or cannot play the files, check that VLC’s installed architecture matches OBS.

Configure the OBS scene and playlist
- Open OBS and choose or create a scene for the sleep stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source for one file or VLC Video for multiple files. The exact layout can vary by OBS build.
- For Media Source, select the local media file and enable Loop. For VLC Video, add the files in the intended order and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Check the preview for the intended image, dimensions, and any overlays. Listen to the full audio path, including the end-to-start transition. Keep the level clear and consistent rather than clipping.
- Save the scene and settings, then test playback long enough to confirm that it repeats as intended.
Do not assume that a successful first playback proves an all-night stream will keep running. File playback, the encoder, the computer, and the network all need to remain healthy; rehearse for as much of the planned duration as practical.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. If you want to prepare and promote the event ahead of time, schedule it.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if the installed OBS version offers it, then connect your account or provide the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish or share it. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before reconnecting the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys and encoder setup in its encoder streaming setup guidance.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room, check stream health, and use YouTube’s Go live control when the event is ready.
Set sustainable video, audio, and upload settings
For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. These are platform settings and recommendations, not a guarantee that every computer or connection can sustain a particular configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

If your upload cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, reduce resolution or bitrate rather than letting the encoder repeatedly drop frames. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. Run an upload test under conditions similar to the planned stream, and leave that reserve for network variation. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
Go live, monitor, and end the event
- Start the encoder early enough to confirm that YouTube receives a stable picture and sound before the planned start.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Check for silent audio, frozen video, dropped frames, or an unexpected source transition.
- When ready, start the event using the Live Control Room control where applicable. Keep OBS and the computer running for the duration of the broadcast.
- At the end, end the YouTube event and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish the same automatic archive outcome for longer sessions. If retaining a recording matters, keep a local recording or plan a shorter broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
Copyright, archives, and monetization
A technically valid loop does not grant permission to use a recording. Use original material or licenses that allow public livestreaming and any archive you intend to retain. YouTube may terminate live streams for copyright violations, and archived streams can receive Content ID claims; see YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube’s monetization policies also apply to live content. Repetitive or mass-produced content without meaningful variation or value may be ineligible; that does not mean every meditation loop violates policy. The policy page notes a July 15, 2025 clarification that renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” without changing the underlying ineligibility for generic, repetitive, or mass-produced content. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and make the stream meaningfully your own where appropriate.

The video stops instead of repeating
For a Media Source, open its properties and verify Loop. For VLC Video, verify Loop Playlist and confirm the playlist itself contains the intended files.

VLC Video is missing or fails to play
Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS calls for 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Reopen OBS after installation if the source is still unavailable.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that OBS is using the current stream URL and key from the selected Live Control Room event. If the key may be compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Confirm the encoder is running and check the YouTube preview before starting the event.

The stream buffers, drops frames, or loses connection
Compare the stream’s total bitrate with stable upload capacity, not a best-case result; preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Lower the output resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. A reliable wired connection may help avoid local Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot increase the internet service’s available upload capacity.
There is no sound, clipped sound, or a bad loop transition
Check that the selected source is audible in OBS and that the mixer is not muted. Listen through the beginning and end of the file or playlist, then through the transition. Adjust the source or mixer level if peaks distort; verify the YouTube preview before going live.
The archive is missing or incomplete
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive case is for streams under 12 hours. For a longer broadcast, do not rely on that guidance to guarantee an archive; record locally if you need a copy and verify that the recording has usable audio and video.
