For a quiet whisper ASMR stream, start with a clean microphone signal, add only enough noise suppression to handle mild steady noise, use an expander carefully between phrases, control peaks with compression, and finish with a limiter. There is no OBS-published universal whisper preset or YouTube loudness target, so tune by listening and test before relying on the chain for a continuous stream.
A conservative OBS filter chain for whisper ASMR
In OBS, open the audio source’s mixer menu and choose Filters to add and arrange filters. The right settings depend on the microphone level, room noise, and how softly you speak; OBS documents filter behavior and examples, not a whisper-ASMR preset. Introduce filters only when they solve an audible problem.
- Set the microphone level at the source. Adjust the microphone or interface first where possible. OBS says gain should generally be applied before the signal reaches OBS. If the source remains too quiet, add the Gain filter and raise it cautiously.
- Add Noise Suppression only if steady background noise is audible. It can help with mild fan, room, or white noise. Choose RNNoise for higher quality at greater CPU use, or Speex when you want configurable suppression. NVIDIA Noise Removal is another documented option when the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK redistributable is installed. Strong suppression or a loud room can make speech sound distorted.
- Use an Expander to reduce noise between phrases. The expander attenuates signal below its threshold. OBS’s general starting guidance is RMS detection, 5–10 ms attack, 50–120 ms release, and a 4:1 ratio as a possible balance. These are general OBS suggestions, not tested whisper settings. Start with a low enough threshold that the first syllable and quiet consonants remain audible.
- Add a Compressor to control louder vocal peaks. Compression makes louder sounds quieter and can reduce the chance of peaks clipping. OBS says it is typically placed at or near the beginning of the chain. Its documented defaults are not an ASMR recipe; adjust gently so that louder words do not sound unnaturally flattened.
- Put the Limiter last. The limiter caps peaks at its threshold. OBS’s documentation says, “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.” Its documented default threshold is −6 dB, which is a filter default, not a recommended YouTube loudness target.
OBS supports a general ordering of compressor near the beginning, expander after compression or other effects, and limiter last. Noise suppression is conditional rather than mandatory; there is no single required order for every setup. Which filters help, and what can go wrong?

Tune the chain by listening, not by chasing a target number
Change one control at a time and listen to both the whisper and the quiet between phrases. Check that the beginning of a word is not suppressed, consonants still sound natural, and level changes do not produce audible pumping. These are practical checks based on the filters’ documented behavior, not published OBS test results.

- Record a short sample or test privately before starting a continuous live session.
- If words are clipped, lower the expander threshold or reduce suppression before raising overall gain.
- If room noise remains obvious, address the noise source where practical; OBS cautions that suppression is generally ineffective in a loud room.
- If peaks still sound harsh, review source level and compression, then verify the limiter is last in the chain.
OBS recommends testing stream operation and configuration before the first stream in its OBS Studio Overview Guide. Neither OBS’s filter pages nor that overview establish an ideal dB loudness target for YouTube ASMR.
