Windows manages network activity during Modern Standby, and a “connected” sleep state does not guarantee that OBS’s encoder and live connection keep running. Check power state first; investigate bitrate and network stability if disconnects also happen while the computer is awake.
Why the stream drops when Windows sleeps
OBS must keep sending video to YouTube’s ingest server. When Windows enters standby, it can limit or quiesce network activity. Microsoft says that, beginning with Windows 10 version 2004, Adaptive Connected Standby is the connectivity default on Modern Standby systems. On battery, Windows manages connectivity during sleep: it allows network activity for supported scenarios and otherwise quiesces it. Microsoft’s Modern Standby networking documentation explains the OS behavior.
The word “connected” describes standby networking; it is not a promise that OBS encoding, capture sources, and the live connection continue as they do while Windows is awake. If the interruption lines up with standby entry, power behavior is the first thing to check—not an OBS bitrate adjustment. OBS describes disconnections more generally as connection instability between the computer and the remote ingest server, which is relevant when the PC stays awake. OBS connection troubleshooting
First identify which kind of disconnection you have

Timing is a clue, not proof by itself. Note whether the stream ends at idle timeout or when you close the laptop lid, and compare that with OBS and YouTube’s status information.

Keep Windows awake during a broadcast
- Confirm when the interruption occurs. Check whether Windows has actually entered standby when OBS disconnects. If it happens at an idle timeout or lid closure, address that power transition first.
- Change the relevant power behavior for the stream. Set the computer not to sleep during the broadcast, and check the lid-close action on a laptop if closing it triggers sleep. The exact labels and choices vary by Windows release and device configuration; use the power settings available on your system rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Keep the device in the required awake state. A display turning off is not necessarily the same as the PC sleeping. The goal is to prevent standby, not merely to keep the screen lit.
Power settings are not the only possible cause. If OBS also loses connection with Windows awake, continue with the separate network checks below.
Check whether your PC supports Modern Standby
Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run:
powercfg /a
This reports the sleep states available on the system. On a Modern Standby PC, look for “Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected” or “Network Disconnected.” The result helps establish what Windows reports about the standby state; it does not establish that OBS can continue streaming through it.

Microsoft also documents a System Power Report and SleepStudy for examining standby sessions. Run:
powercfg /spr
Review the generated report for standby-session details, including whether a session was connected. See Microsoft’s Modern Standby diagnostics documentation for the report and diagnostic context. These checks help distinguish a sleep transition from a stream failure that occurs while Windows is still active.

If OBS disconnects while the PC stays awake
Use network and encoder troubleshooting rather than treating sleep as the cause. OBS and YouTube offer diagnostic guidance, not guaranteed fixes.
- Check upload stability and bitrate. Confirm that the available outbound connection is stable for the stream you are sending. A bitrate change is relevant to upload limitations, but it will not prevent Windows from entering standby.
- Compare Wi-Fi with wired networking. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming generally because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet can help diagnose a separate Wi-Fi issue; it does not keep the computer awake.
- Check software and network components. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, drivers, and router or ISP issues as possible factors. Test methodically, changing one factor at a time and restoring protections after a test.
- Check the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, checking the encoder, and testing outbound internet connectivity. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance
If the issue persists, record whether Windows was awake, the OBS connection status or relevant log evidence, and what YouTube Live Control Room reports. Those details help separate a local power transition from an encoder or network fault.

What YouTube auto-start and auto-stop do—and do not do
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether streaming from the encoder starts or stops the broadcast. They are broadcast-lifecycle controls, not Windows power settings; they do not prevent the PC from sleeping. Use them for the intended start/stop behavior, not as a fix for standby-related disconnections. YouTube stream settings
