To make donation messages speak during a livestream, enable text-to-speech (TTS) for the relevant event in your alert service, add that service’s alert overlay to your streaming scene, and test it before going live. In Streamlabs, the documented setup covers Tips and Bits: choose the event, enable TTS, set a minimum amount and voice, and review the spam and profanity filters.
Set up donation TTS in Streamlabs
Streamlabs’ guide, published November 5, 2025, says TTS is off by default. You configure it in the Streamlabs dashboard for each supported alert event.
- Open the Streamlabs TTS guide and sign in to your Streamlabs dashboard.
- Open Alert Box, then select Tips or Bits, depending on which event should trigger speech.
- Open the event’s Text-to-Speech settings and enable TTS.
- Set the minimum tip amount and choose a voice. Streamlabs describes its offering as including over 50 voices and multiple languages; this is the provider’s feature claim and may change.
- Review the spam filter and profanity and custom-word settings. Streamlabs says its default profanity filter prevents filtered words from appearing on screen and being spoken. TTS reads viewer-submitted text, so check the safeguards and decide what is appropriate for your stream.
Streamlabs’ guide notes that repeated-character spam can be filtered. If messages are cut off, it suggests turning the spam filter off; doing so also removes that particular safeguard, so weigh the trade-off before changing it. The provider warns that TTS can be used to troll creators with offensive content.
Add the alert overlay to your streaming scene
Enabling TTS in the provider dashboard is not enough on its own: the alert box or overlay must also be present in the scene you stream. Streamlabs documents these routes in its alerts setup guide:

- Streamlabs Desktop: add an Alert Box source from Sources.
- OBS with the Streamlabs plugin: add the Alert Box widget.
- OBS without the plugin, or other streaming software: copy the Streamlabs Widget URL and add it as a Browser Source.
OBS Project’s alerts and chat box tutorial describes the provider-neutral Browser Source method: configure an overlay with an alert provider, copy its overlay or widget URL, add a Browser source to the desired OBS scene, paste the URL, and choose suitable dimensions. OBS lists Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples; an alerts plugin is not required for this method.
Test speech and moderation before going live
- Use the alert provider’s test function and live preview to check that the alert appears and the message is spoken. Streamlabs documents both dashboard testing and previewing alerts.
- Check the scene you intend to broadcast, not only the provider’s dashboard preview. Confirm that the overlay is visible at the size and position you want.
- Verify the selected event, minimum amount, voice, and filters. If a test does not produce speech, check that TTS is enabled for that event and that the alert overlay is actually in the active scene.
What about StreamElements or another alert provider?
StreamElements is another relevant alert service. Its Quick-Start Guide covers overlay setup and alerts that can include donation text, and discusses chat TTS through its loyalty system. That guide does not provide a complete current click-by-click procedure for donation-triggered TTS, so check the provider’s current event settings rather than assuming chat TTS and donation-alert TTS use the same setup.

When choosing a provider, check whether it supports the event you want—such as tips, Bits, or a chat redemption—and whether it gives you the controls you need for minimum amounts, voice, message length or spam, and moderation. Then add that provider’s overlay to your streaming software. OBS can display an alert-provider URL as a Browser source; OBS does not require one particular alert service.
