You can make a black-screen white-noise livestream by sending a black video scene and a rights-cleared noise recording to YouTube Live through an encoder such as OBS. For a computer-based setup, the computer and internet connection must stay available; for a cloud-run option, upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live with StreamNeo. First confirm your channel is eligible to stream, then test the sound and picture before making the broadcast public.
Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running setup; eligibility details can change, so consult YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
Prepare white-noise audio you have permission to use
Use a recording you made, commissioned, or licensed for the intended live broadcast and any replay you plan to retain. The fact that a track is available to listen to or download does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions make rights clearance the creator’s responsibility, including applicable music licensing rights. Keep a copy of the license or other permission records.
Make the black-screen feed in an encoder
- Create a scene. In OBS or another encoder, add a black visual source or set the scene canvas to black. YouTube documents how to connect an encoder, but does not prescribe a particular OBS scene recipe; exact controls vary by software version and operating system.
- Route in the audio. Add the prepared noise recording as an audio source or route it through the system audio mix. Configure playback to continue or loop, as supported by your software.
- Check the mix. Listen through the full loop for silence between repetitions, clicks, clipping, or unwanted system sounds. Confirm that the video output remains black. A static black picture does not call for elaborate video production; choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain reliably rather than increasing them without a reason. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for supported output values.
- Skip unnecessary gear. YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to get started. The described setup does not establish a need for a dedicated encoder, microphone, capture card, or audio interface.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Choose the privacy and other settings you need; use a private or unlisted stream for an initial test if appropriate.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast into the encoder’s stream settings. The encoder needs both to send the feed. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the picture is black and the noise is audible and stable. View the test from another device if possible; if recording locally, confirm that the file is growing.
- If the workflow presents a separate step, select Go live in Live Control Room after reviewing the preview. YouTube recommends checking stream quality and audience accessibility; its live-streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
Plan for continuous playback and replays
Keeping the broadcast running
With a local encoder, uninterrupted operation depends on the computer, encoder software, power, and internet connection staying available. Monitor the stream and decide how you will restart it after a failure; neither the local method nor YouTube guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 playback. YouTube advises selecting a quality that the available connection can reliably sustain.

Saving a replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a single continuous broadcast as a complete replay. If you need an archive, keep a local recording and consider ending and restarting broadcasts before the limit, knowing this creates separate streams and an interruption. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Understand rights and monetization limits
Permission to use the audio and compliance with YouTube policies are separate issues. YouTube’s monetization policies identify repetitive or mass-produced content as inauthentic content that may be ineligible for monetization; a 24/7 loop is not a guarantee of acceptance into or continued participation in the YouTube Partner Program. Also, livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand do not count as qualified public watch hours for the relevant thresholds. Troubleshoot common problems
- No signal in Live Control Room: confirm the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the stream you created. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Preview is not black: inspect the active scene and its visual sources; a visible source or transition can cover the black background.
- Silence or gaps in the noise: check that the audio source is routed to the stream mix and that playback is configured to continue or loop. Listen through a full cycle before publishing.
- Clicks, distortion, or unwanted sounds: lower levels if the signal clips, inspect the recording for edits or gaps, and check that system audio is not adding alerts or other sounds.
- Unstable or interrupted stream: choose a lower output quality if the connection cannot sustain the current one, check local network and power, and restart the encoder if needed. Test playback from a viewer device rather than relying only on the encoder preview.
- No complete YouTube replay: broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or separate shorter broadcasts when an archive is important.
