For a continuous yoga music stream that does not need live conversation, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio. It favors smoother playback with the least buffering; a shorter delay offers little benefit when viewers are listening rather than waiting for a response.
Which latency setting should you use?
Use Normal latency for background yoga music when you are not responding to viewers in real time. YouTube describes Normal as the best fit for non-interactive streams and the viewer option with the least buffering. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “If you don’t interact with your audience, higher latency is not a problem.”
Choose a lower-latency option only if the stream depends on audience interaction. Low latency is intended for limited interaction, such as polls; Ultra-low latency is intended for real-time conversation. Both reduce the time viewers wait to see the stream, but leave less tolerance for delivery problems and do not support 4K. YouTube warns that lower latency can increase buffering, and network congestion can cause delays even when a connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate.
| Setting | Intended use | Typical viewer delay | Buffering and resolution tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams, such as background yoga music | No numerical promise stated in YouTube’s guidance | Lowest viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls | Most viewers experience under 10 seconds | More buffering risk than Normal; 4K unsupported |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation | Most viewers experience under 5 seconds | Greater buffering risk; 4K unsupported |
The delay figures for Low and Ultra-low describe what most viewers experience, not a guarantee for each viewer or a promise of a particular end-to-end delay for your stream.

How to change YouTube Live latency
The manual latency control is for encoder-based broadcasts. YouTube says webcam and mobile broadcasts are set up for interactivity and do not expose a manual latency selection.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Enter the stream details, then choose Stream or Manage from the left menu.
- Open Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, select Normal latency for a non-interactive continuous music stream. Select Low or Ultra-low only if your format benefits from faster audience interaction.
Check the encoder and audio before going live
Latency is the time between capture and playback. The player’s read-ahead buffer is a main source of delay: reducing it can make conversation happen sooner, but leaves less room to absorb problems between encoder and player. Latency selection does not replace a reliable encoder setup or a realistic test.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
- Use CBR bitrate encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends not exceeding four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio, with 44.1 kHz stereo audio.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Check YouTube’s current official encoder guidance for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution; do not assume one bitrate fits every resolution.
Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. For a music stream, listen to the real audio chain and check the visual scene. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and its messages.
Account for DVR on a continuous broadcast
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live broadcast, then resume from where they paused. They cannot seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours; viewers on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, or older app versions can face lower limits. Avoid promising viewers unlimited rewind on a long-running stream.

To change DVR, open the stream dashboard and go to Stream settings > Additional settings. YouTube says DVR can be enabled or disabled while live, but the change applies only to viewers who start playback after it is made. Turning DVR off prevents viewers from seeking back during the live broadcast; YouTube says they can still watch the recording after it becomes available.
Troubleshooting latency and playback
- Viewers report buffering: If you selected Low or Ultra-low, consider switching to Normal when real-time interaction is not essential. Lower latency carries more buffering risk.
- Delay varies despite a suitable connection: Network congestion can cause delays even when the connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate. Check stream health and messages, then test the actual audio/video setup.
- You cannot find a latency control: Confirm that you are configuring an encoder-based broadcast in YouTube Studio. Webcam and mobile streams do not expose this manual control.
- Viewers cannot rewind far back: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, with lower limits possible on certain devices or older app versions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded yoga music recording to play continuously on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
