Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse chromedp to drive a separate Chrome-compatible browser from Go: create a context, navigate to the page, capture the viewport, an element, or the full page, then save the returned image bytes. Run the Go program and browser on an EC2 instance in AWS’s Mumbai Region, ap-south-1, if the workload needs to run there. Chromedp is not itself a browser, so the instance also needs a compatible browser runtime.
What you need on the Mumbai instance
- A Go module with the chromedp package.
- A compatible Chrome or Chromium binary, or a headless-shell runtime. The chromedp project documents its headless-shell image as an option for headless environments; see the project README.
- A network path from the instance to the target website and permission to capture it.
Chrome runs headless by default according to the chromedp project. EC2’s Mumbai Region code is ap-south-1; the region does not prescribe a particular operating-system image or instance size. Choose those for your workload and verify browser installation steps against the selected image. The sources cited here do not establish a tested EC2 configuration or workload-specific sizing recommendation.
Choose what to capture
| Mode | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The browser’s current visible area. | The visible screen is the intended output. |
| Element | A selected page node. | You need a specific component and have a valid selector. |
| Full page | Content extending beyond the current viewport. | You need a tall page capture rather than only the visible region. |
Chromedp’s package reference and examples document these screenshot actions. Element selectors are site-specific: confirm that the selector exists and that the page has reached the state you need before capturing.
Build a basic Go screenshot program
In a Go module, add chromedp using the package path:

go get github.com/chromedp/chromedp
This example navigates to a URL, waits for the body element, captures a viewport screenshot, and writes the image to shot.png. It expects the compatible browser runtime to be installed and available to chromedp in the execution environment.
package main
import (
"context"
"log"
"os"
"time"
"github.com/chromedp/chromedp"
)
func main() {
ctx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(context.Background(), 60*time.Second)
defer cancel()
var image []byte
err := chromedp.Run(ctx,
chromedp.Navigate("https://example.com"),
chromedp.WaitVisible("body", chromedp.ByQuery),
chromedp.CaptureScreenshot(&image),
)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
if err := os.WriteFile("shot.png", image, 0o644); err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
}
The context timeout bounds the operation; adjust it for the target page and environment rather than treating this example value as a universal limit. The deferred cancellation releases the context when the program exits. Chromedp’s README describes the context/Run pattern and notes that losing the browser connection can cancel the context.

Capture an element or the full page
Replace the viewport action in the example with one of the following actions, keeping the same navigation and output handling. The selector shown is only an example; inspect the actual target page and choose a visible element that exists.
Capture one element
chromedp.Screenshot("main", &image, chromedp.NodeVisible, chromedp.ByQuery)
This captures the node matched by the CSS selector main. If the site has no matching visible node, choose a selector that does match or the action may fail.

Capture the full page
chromedp.FullScreenshot(&image, 90)
The quality argument applies to the image encoding used by the action. Use the package reference for the exact action signatures and available options: chromedp package reference. The upstream example demonstrates both element and full-page capture and writing image bytes to files: chromedp examples.
Run the workflow on EC2 in Mumbai
- Launch or select an EC2 environment in AWS Region
ap-south-1when Mumbai is a requirement. - Install Go and a compatible Chrome/Chromium or headless-shell runtime for the chosen operating-system image. The sources referenced here do not specify current install commands for a particular image, so follow that image’s documentation and verify the resulting browser executable.
- Deploy the Go module and run it with access to the browser runtime and target site. Keep credentials and other sensitive configuration out of source code.
- Confirm that the output file exists and is a valid image. If capturing an element, verify its selector and visibility against the target site.
For a managed headless environment, the chromedp project points to its headless-shell image. That is a packaging option, not evidence of a particular performance or cost advantage over running a local browser process on EC2.

Reliability, safety, and operating costs
- Readiness: A page can navigate successfully before its content is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector, or use another readiness condition appropriate to the page before taking the screenshot.
- External input: Treat target URLs as untrusted input in production. Apply timeouts, resource controls, and isolation so a requested page cannot make the capture process access unintended resources.
- Browser lifecycle: Cancel contexts cleanly. A lost browser connection can cancel chromedp’s context; handle errors and decide whether the application should retry.
- Costs: EC2 and browser costs depend on the selected region, instance, runtime, and usage. The sources here do not establish a price or benchmark for this workflow; consult current AWS pricing for the configuration you choose.
Troubleshooting
- Browser executable cannot be found or launched: Chromedp controls a separate browser. Install a compatible Chrome/Chromium binary or use a headless-shell runtime, then check that the process can access it.
- Navigation or capture times out: The target may be slow, unreachable, or waiting on resources. Check network access, use a bounded timeout suited to the workload, and wait for a page-specific readiness condition.
- Element screenshot fails: Confirm that the CSS selector matches a node on the current page and that the node is visible. A site redesign can invalidate a previously working selector.
- Image is incomplete: A viewport capture intentionally covers only the visible browser area. Use full-page capture if the intended artifact includes content beyond that area, and ensure the page has loaded the content you need.
- Browser disconnect cancels the operation: Check browser process health and connection stability; chromedp documents context cancellation when its browser connection is lost.
- Output file is missing: Check the returned error from
chromedp.Runand the file write, then verify the process has permission to write to the chosen path.
