You can run a prerecorded rain-sounds stream around the clock by keeping the media and OBS on a cloud server, then sending OBS’s output to YouTube with the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The server still needs enough resources and outbound bandwidth for the stream, and the channel must be eligible to go live. This guide covers the do-it-yourself setup, checks, and risks; exact server sizing depends on your media and OBS settings.

How the setup works

Your cloud server stores the rain audio and any accompanying visual, runs OBS, and sends the encoded stream to YouTube. Your home computer does not need to stay on once the server is configured, though you will need remote access to set it up and maintain it.

This is a prerecorded-media workflow, not a camera broadcast. OBS’s YouTube configuration and YouTube’s Live Control Room provide the connection details; use the values currently issued for your channel rather than a copied example. OBS’s service configuration is a useful technical reference, but the platform’s current settings take precedence.

Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days. Check Live Control Room before spending time configuring a server. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Use audio and visuals you are allowed to stream

Use recordings and images you created, or have permission to use for livestreaming and any recording or archive you keep. Retain license records. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for the necessary rights on the content provider, including music licensing rights: YouTube livestream terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream that matches protected material. A license alone may not prevent interruption if a rights holder uses Content ID and has not allowlisted your channel. If applicable, ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel before you start. Details: YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Choose a cloud server for the workload

There is no universally prescribed server size for this workflow. Select a host based on the actual OBS encoder and output settings, the amount of media you will store, and the network capacity needed to send the stream continuously. Check the provider’s outbound transfer allowance and policies, not just its advertised connection speed.

  • CPU: Confirm the server can sustain your chosen OBS encoder and output settings. A different encoder or resolution can change the workload.
  • Outbound networking: Ensure the route and transfer allowance support the total stream bitrate continuously. Review throttling, fair-use, and regional network terms.
  • Storage: Allow for the media files and any additional assets you keep on the server.
  • Administration and recovery: Consider remote access for maintenance, restart behavior, and how you will recover if OBS or the host stops.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. That is guidance, not a guarantee against interruption. Check YouTube’s network and stream-quality guidance and compare the requirement with the cloud provider’s actual outbound terms. No specific provider, plan, or price is established here.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Prepare the server and media. Install OBS using the operating system and method supported by your cloud host. Store the rain recording and visual assets on the server, where OBS can access them. Cloud operating-system images and headless-display configurations vary; follow the host’s documentation for remote graphical applications rather than assuming one recipe works everywhere.
  2. Create a simple OBS scene. Add the rain audio and a visual source appropriate to your stream. Check that the audio plays continuously and the visual does not unexpectedly disappear or go blank. The exact source configuration depends on your media and server setup.
  3. Set output and encoder options. Choose the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate that your server can sustain and that suit the content. OBS’s YouTube RTMPS configuration lists a two-second keyframe interval as a recommendation, but platform guidance and settings can change; check the current YouTube interface and OBS service configuration rather than hard-coding values from an old example. The sources do not establish one bitrate or resolution for every rain stream.
  4. Retrieve YouTube’s current connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Go live to reach Live Control Room and use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key provided for your channel. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  5. Enter the connection details in OBS. Select YouTube RTMPS in OBS if available, or enter the exact RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room, then provide the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, shared configuration, or public command output.
  6. Test before relying on it. Start with a private or unlisted test, inspect the YouTube preview, and verify both audio and video. Also check how the workflow behaves after a reconnect and a server restart. These are practical checks, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
  7. Monitor the running server. Keep a way to reach the host and check OBS, the media source, and the YouTube stream after launch. Server and network failures can interrupt the stream; YouTube warns that network disruption can affect streaming.

Understand looping, copyright, and monetization

A loop is not automatically monetizable

YouTube’s channel monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says highly repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified and renamed this policy as “inauthentic content.” A rain loop is not assured monetization simply because it runs live; eligibility depends on YouTube’s review of the channel and content. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Ad delivery and income are not guaranteed

Eligible monetized live streams can have pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads, but YouTube does not guarantee that every ad slot will serve. See YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS will not connect to YouTube Incorrect or outdated ingest URL or stream key, or a connection problem. Retrieve the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, re-enter them in OBS, and check the server’s outbound network access.
The stream drops or becomes unstable Insufficient sustained outbound capacity or a disrupted network route. Compare the total bitrate with available upload bandwidth and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Review the host’s transfer limits, throttling terms, and regional route.
Audio or visuals stop during the stream The media source or scene may not be continuing as expected. Inspect the source and scene in OBS, then repeat a private or unlisted test long enough to check that audio remains present and the visual stays available.
The live stream is interrupted over a rights claim YouTube may have matched third-party material; a rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel. Use properly cleared assets, review the notice, and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where appropriate. Do not assume a license alone prevents automated interruption.
The channel cannot start a live stream The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility conditions or may have a live-stream restriction. Check verification and the channel’s restriction status in Live Control Room before troubleshooting OBS.

DIY costs and operational trade-offs

With a cloud-server approach, your recurring cost depends on the host’s compute, storage, and outbound-transfer terms. The material here does not establish current provider prices or a best-value server plan, so compare those figures directly with each host before committing. OBS is free streaming software, according to OBS’s official help portal; that does not remove the cost of the cloud host or the time needed to administer the setup.

A server gives you control over OBS and the media workflow, but you remain responsible for configuration, monitoring, and recovery. If you prefer not to operate an OBS server, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not run your OBS encoder.
