To run a 24/7 ocean sounds stream on YouTube with changing visuals, prepare rights-cleared ocean footage and audio, create scenes in OBS Studio, connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast, and keep the computer and internet connection running while you monitor the feed. Test a complete scene rotation before going live. If you do not want a computer or home connection to run continuously, cloud playout is an alternative.
What you need for a 24/7 ocean stream
A YouTube Live broadcast needs an encoder that sends a continuous feed; uploading a video by itself does not create an ongoing live session. OBS Studio is a free, open-source encoder that can combine video and audio sources into scenes and send them to YouTube. See the OBS help portal for current version-specific guidance.
- Ocean visuals: Original footage or footage licensed for live transmission and any archived replay.
- Ocean audio: Original recordings or audio with permissions that cover your intended use.
- An encoder: OBS Studio on a computer, or a cloud playout service.
- A YouTube Live broadcast: Create it in YouTube Studio and use its streaming-software workflow to connect the encoder. Studio labels can change, so follow the current interface.
- Continuous operation: For local OBS, the computer, power, source media, and upload connection must remain available.
YouTube account eligibility and current live-streaming limits can vary; confirm the requirements shown in YouTube Studio for your channel before planning a continuous broadcast.
Prepare footage, audio, and scene order
Clear the rights before building the stream
Check the license for every video, sound recording, music track, graphic, and other third-party element. Confirm that it permits live transmission and, if you plan to leave the stream available afterward, an archived replay. A stock-site label alone does not establish that a use is permitted.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID even when you have a license. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Choose a rotation that will feel continuous
Decide what viewers should see and in what order. For example, you might rotate from a daylight shore to a dusk wave view and then to a night surf view. Those are editorial examples, not required scene types. Decide whether the ocean audio should run continuously across visual changes or whether each clip carries its own sound. That choice affects how you arrange audio sources and what you need to test.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and prepare a live broadcast.
- Select the streaming-software workflow and locate the connection details OBS needs. Handle the stream key as a secret: do not publish it, send it to viewers, or include it in screenshots.
- Keep the broadcast dashboard open during setup so you can check whether YouTube is receiving the preview and whether the ingest status shows a problem.
The precise Studio labels and placement can change. Use the options shown in your current YouTube Studio account rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.
Build the scenes and audio in OBS
- Create one scene per visual. In OBS, add a scene for each ocean view and give it a recognizable name, such as “Daylight shore” or “Night surf.” Scene names are for your control and do not affect the YouTube title.
- Add a video source to each scene. Add the corresponding media file and configure it to loop if that scene should repeat. Check the source’s properties and transition behavior in your installed OBS version.
- Set up ocean audio. Add the appropriate audio source, or use the audio included with the video if you have cleared its rights. Watch the OBS audio mixer, check that the source is not muted, and choose whether audio should continue across scene changes.
- Arrange the rotation. Configure the scene changes or playlist approach that fits your intended sequence. OBS controls can differ by version and by how you build the media sources; consult the official OBS help portal for current instructions.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use the connection details from the YouTube Studio streaming-software workflow. Do not share the stream key. Start with a private or otherwise non-public test if you need to verify the full chain before launch.
Callaba’s vendor guide to continuous YouTube streaming discusses example configurations, but example settings are not universal. The right output depends on your source media, computer, and sustained upload capacity. Do not copy a bitrate or resolution without checking whether your full setup can maintain it.

Choose output settings your setup can sustain
Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the result. There is no single bitrate or resolution established here as right for every ocean stream. A higher output demand can exceed the computer’s capacity or the stability of its upload connection. Prefer a stable configuration over a more demanding one that repeatedly drops frames.
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame information while testing and check YouTube Studio’s ingest status. OBS notes that rising dropped-frame counts can signal an unstable connection to the destination or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If that happens, check the connection and reduce output demands until the feed is stable; see the OBS help portal.
Test the full rotation before going live
Let the stream run long enough to pass through the complete planned scene cycle, including file boundaries. A preview that works for only the first clip does not confirm that a long rotation will stay continuous.
- Confirm each intended scene appears in the right order.
- Look for black frames, blank gaps, unintended pauses, or abrupt transitions at file boundaries.
- Listen for audio gaps, doubled audio, unexpected source audio, or silence when visuals change.
- Check OBS’s audio mixer and the YouTube preview for a usable signal.
- Verify that the stream key and ingest connection work and that YouTube Studio receives the feed.
- Run the test beyond one full playlist cycle if the rotation contains several sources.
Keep a local OBS stream running
A local setup relies on more than OBS. The computer, power, media files, software, and upload connection all need to remain available. Set a person and a plan for noticing and responding if the encoder or feed stops; an unattended process is not the same as a monitored one.

- Prevent the computer from sleeping while the broadcast is running, and account for planned restarts or updates.
- Use wired Ethernet where practical; it can avoid some Wi-Fi variability but cannot guarantee a stable internet connection.
- Check OBS and YouTube Studio periodically for dropped frames, ingest warnings, and feed interruptions.
- Consider a UPS if local power interruptions are a concern. It can help with loss of mains power, but it does not fix internet outages, software crashes, or content-rights problems.
- Decide in advance who can restart the encoder and how they will verify the YouTube feed afterward.
Troubleshoot common stream problems
OBS reports dropped frames
Check whether the upload connection is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce output demands and observe whether dropped frames stop increasing. Also check for local network interruptions.
The YouTube feed stops
Check whether the computer slept or restarted, whether OBS is still running, whether power or the network dropped, whether the stream key is correct, and what YouTube Studio reports about ingest. Restart the encoder if needed, then confirm the preview returns before treating the broadcast as restored.
A scene turns black or has a gap at a loop boundary
Check the media source’s loop setting, file compatibility, and transition behavior. Test the full rotation, not just the first play-through. If the gap persists, try a compatible media file or adjust how that source transitions into the next scene.
There is no sound, or the audio changes unexpectedly
Check that the media has an audio track, the OBS source is not muted, and the mixer shows activity. Listen to the YouTube preview and check what happens at each scene change. Confirm which source is meant to carry continuous ocean sound so that audio is not accidentally interrupted or doubled.

YouTube warns about copyrighted content or interrupts the feed
Review the warning in YouTube Studio and address the rights issue. A license may not prevent a live interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Check the archive for claims after the broadcast ends as well.
Local OBS or cloud playout?
These are different operating models, not a guarantee-versus-no-guarantee choice. Cloud playout can reduce dependence on one home computer and connection, but you still need to monitor the destination and handle platform or rights problems. After the broadcast: review rights and the archive
Continue checking YouTube Studio for live-session warnings while the broadcast is running. If you end the stream or leave an archive available, review the video afterward for Content ID claims. A live feed and its archive can have separate rights outcomes, so keep records of the licenses and permissions covering both uses.
