A cloud relay can forward your fireplace stream to a viewing platform without making your home computer send directly to every destination. To use one, send an encoder’s RTMP or SRT feed to the relay’s provider-issued address and key, select your destination there, and start the encoder. For an ongoing fireplace loop, plan separately for source failures and stream-duration limits: a relay alone cannot restore a broken source or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 viewing.
How a cloud relay fits into a fireplace stream
The usual path is: fireplace video or loop → source encoder → cloud relay → streaming platform. The encoder sends its live output to an account-issued relay endpoint; the relay then forwards it to the destination or destinations you select. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documents pushing output to remote RTMP or SRT endpoints, while Restream documents encoder ingest and destination setup. A relay changes where the feed is distributed; it does not create a missing feed. If the source encoder, its network, or the video loop stops, the relay cannot reconstruct that live input. For continuity, you need a separate recovery plan, such as a fallback clip or a second live encoder, if your selected provider supports it.

Set up a managed relay
- Choose a source. Use a continuously running encoder or another cloud streaming service if you need a conventional live input. A prerecorded fireplace loop still needs a source workflow that plays it out as a live feed. The cited relay guides cover encoder and cloud output paths; they do not establish one best source architecture for every fireplace stream.
- Create the relay stream and choose destination(s). In a managed service, create an encoder stream and select the platform destinations in its dashboard. For Google Cloud Live Stream API, configure output distribution to the remote RTMP or SRT endpoint as described in its endpoint guide.
- Copy the account-issued connection details into the encoder. Enter the exact server URL and stream key or stream ID supplied for your relay account. Do not use example credentials as production credentials. For Restream’s documented SRT workflow, OBS uses the Custom service option and the URL provided by Restream; SRT is listed for Business and custom Enterprise plans. Restream SRT setup.
- Set up interruption behavior before going live. Decide whether viewers should see a temporary holding video if the source disconnects, a second live input, or both if your provider supports them. These are different safeguards: a fallback video is not a backup live encoder. Restream’s disconnect protection must be configured before the active stream, is plan-dependent, and documents fallback intervals of 5, 15, or 30 minutes. If the input does not reconnect within the configured interval, Restream says the stream ends at destinations. Restream disconnect protection.
- Run a full-path test. Start the source and confirm that the relay receives it and the destination shows the fireplace video. Then deliberately disconnect and reconnect the source to see what viewers receive and how recovery behaves. This is a practical commissioning step, not a guarantee of future availability.
- Prepare monitoring and restart steps. Know where to check source, relay, and destination status, who can restart the encoder, and how to reconnect the feed. Follow any duration guidance for the service you choose.
Understand fallback video and backup streams
Fallback video: a temporary holding clip
Disconnect protection can show a prepared clip while the main input is unavailable. It masks an interruption only for the provider’s configured interval; it does not repair the source. Restream lists 5-, 15-, or 30-minute settings for its feature, with plan requirements and setup before going live. Check the provider’s current instructions and eligibility rather than assuming another relay has the same options. Restream disconnect-protection guide.
Backup stream: a second live input
A backup stream is a second encoder sending live video, distinct from a holding clip. It can provide another input if the primary encoder fails, but does not make the source or destination infallible. Restream documents backup streams separately from disconnect protection and notes plan requirements. It recommends keeping the primary and backup feeds closely matched to make a switch less noticeable. Restream backup-stream guide.

What “24/7” means in practice
Do not interpret a cloud relay or backup feature as a universal promise of uninterrupted streaming. In its backup-stream documentation, Restream says, “Restream doesn’t guarantee that a stream will be live for more than 24 hours, even with the backup feature,” and recommends restarting continuous streams every 24 hours. It says longer duration requires asking about a custom plan. This is Restream-specific guidance, not a general limit for all relays. Restream backup-stream guide.
No independent uptime measurement or universal 24/7 guarantee is established for the options described here. Confirm stream duration terms with your provider, schedule any required restarts, and maintain a recovery procedure for source, relay, and destination failures.

Check protocol and network access
The encoder must reach the relay using the protocol and network route the provider supports. Restream’s network guide lists port 1935 for RTMP/RTMPS and UDP port 2010 for SRT encoder traffic. A firewall or gateway that blocks the relevant traffic can prevent a connection. These are Restream’s listed requirements; verify the current ports and protocol requirements for your chosen provider and network. Restream network settings.
Troubleshoot common relay failures
