Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose FFmpeg if you want control and can keep a host, media source, and network connection running. Choose a cloud playlist service if you want prerecorded video to keep streaming to YouTube without leaving your own computer on. FFmpeg is the self-managed option; a cloud service shifts playlist operation and streaming to a vendor’s infrastructure. That reduces local maintenance but makes you dependent on the service’s limits, reliability, support, and terms.
How the two approaches work
FFmpeg on a host you manage
You prepare the media and an FFmpeg command or process, configure it to send the feed to YouTube’s ingest server using your stream key, then keep the host and its network connection available. YouTube is the destination and publishing platform; it is not the playlist host for this workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to use the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
FFmpeg gives you control over encoding, playlist logic, process supervision, and integration with your own storage or automation. You also own the work of keeping the source files accessible, managing transitions, monitoring stream health, and responding to power, internet, host, or process failures. FFmpeg documents network-output options such as persistent HTTP connections and ignoring I/O errors, but those options are not automatic failover or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: FFmpeg protocol documentation.
A cloud playlist service
The usual workflow is to upload or select prerecorded videos, arrange them in a playlist, connect the YouTube destination, and let the vendor’s servers send the broadcast. LiveReacting describes uploading or importing videos, building a playlist, and streaming from its servers while your computer is off: LiveReacting’s 24/7 streaming information. Gyre also describes looping playlists from cloud infrastructure: Gyre. These are vendor descriptions, not independent uptime audits.

A hosted service removes the need to operate your own always-on streaming host, but not the need to assess the service. Before committing, check storage and transfer limits, playlist and scheduling controls, resolution, stream count, restart behavior, support, availability commitments, data export and deletion, cancellation terms, and total cost for your expected runtime. Plan details change; the cited material does not establish a current apples-to-apples price or uptime comparison between providers.
Compare the trade-offs that affect an always-on channel
| Decision factor | FFmpeg on your host | Cloud playlist service |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You control encoding, process behavior, and automation, but must configure and maintain them. FFmpeg documentation. | Playlist and broadcast controls come through the vendor workflow; available functions depend on its plan. See LiveReacting and Gyre. |
| Always-on compute | Your managed host must remain available while the stream process runs. | Vendors describe their cloud servers as keeping streams running while your computer is off. Verify the specific service’s current terms; see LiveReacting and Gyre. |
| Setup and troubleshooting | Requires FFmpeg and ingest configuration knowledge, process supervision, and stream monitoring. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder instructions. | The vendor may provide upload/import, playlist arrangement, and destination setup. Confirm which recovery controls and support are included; LiveReacting describes its workflow at its 24/7 streaming page. |
| Continuity evidence | FFmpeg’s network-output options can help with particular errors, but the documentation does not promise uninterrupted operation: FFmpeg protocols. | Cloud operation is a vendor claim, not independent comparative uptime evidence. Ask what availability commitments and failure recovery apply to your plan. |
| Archives | YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer sessions need a separate archive plan. YouTube encoder and live-streaming guidance. | The same YouTube archive limit applies to the destination broadcast. Check whether the service supports planned restarts or segmented sessions if archiving matters. |
| Cost | Host, power, bandwidth, storage, setup time, and maintenance vary by deployment; the cited documentation does not price them. | Subscription, storage, runtime, resolution, stream count, and cancellation terms vary by provider and plan. Verify current terms directly before choosing. |
Configure the YouTube feed correctly
For either approach, the encoder or hosted service sends video to YouTube using the ingest server URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to that stream. YouTube’s settings can change, so match your encoder and source to its current live encoder settings and setup guidance.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported codecs.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube advises not exceeding 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the RTMP/RTMPS profiles covered by YouTube’s guidance, and select the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate from the current settings page rather than guessing.
- Frame rate and audio: Check YouTube’s current profile recommendations for the resolution, frame rate, and audio format you intend to send.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for supported viewer devices. That does not mean every source file or encoder configuration will work without testing. Run a test stream and monitor stream health before relying on a long broadcast.
Plan for archives and content rights
Continuous streaming is not the same as a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. If preserving the broadcast matters, arrange a separate recording or plan appropriate segmented sessions and restarts, and confirm that your chosen service supports the workflow.

Streaming tools do not grant media rights
You remain responsible for having rights to every video and audio track you broadcast. LiveReacting’s setup guidance advises using material you created, own, or are licensed to stream: LiveReacting. Uploading a file to a cloud service or sending it with FFmpeg does not grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules also apply; a continuous stream is not exempt from claims or enforcement.
Which approach fits your situation?
- Choose FFmpeg when encoding and automation control matter most, you can operate a reliable host and network connection, and you are prepared to monitor and maintain the pipeline.
- Choose a cloud playlist service when you want uploaded prerecorded videos to continue streaming while your own computer is off, and you accept vendor dependence after verifying plan limits, support, archive handling, and terms.
Do not choose based on claims that a tool will grow your audience. The cited service pages do not establish independently measured growth outcomes. For either route, compare the full operating cost and the recovery process against your expected runtime and the consequences of an interruption.
