1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can run a rain-ambience livestream from a Raspberry Pi by sending a continuous, rights-cleared audio-and-video source through an encoder to YouTube Live. Start with a simple 720p30 stream, use a stable wired connection if practical, leave upload headroom, and test the complete setup before relying on it. A Raspberry Pi can be the encoder, but the available specifications do not establish that a particular Pi configuration will encode reliably around the clock; monitor it rather than assuming uninterrupted operation.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A Raspberry Pi, power supply, microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS, and a network connection with dependable upload capacity.
- A continuous rain recording and visual loop that you own or have permission to stream and archive.
- Encoder software that can send the selected audio and video source to YouTube Live. The sources cited here do not establish a tested Pi-specific application, command, or 24/7 restart configuration, so verify your chosen encoder’s compatibility and operation on your board.
Raspberry Pi 5 is one candidate: its official specifications list a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a microSD slot. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A power supply and says active cooling helps the board perform under load. These are hardware specifications, not a guarantee of stable encoding at a particular resolution or for 24/7 operation. See the Raspberry Pi 5 product page.
Install the operating system
Raspberry Pi OS is Raspberry Pi’s supported operating system. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write it to a microSD card. As of the Raspberry Pi OS downloads page accessed on 3 October 2026, the 64-bit release is dated 15 September 2026, based on Debian 13 (Trixie) with Linux kernel 6.18. Releases change, so confirm the current download and compatibility before installation at Raspberry Pi OS downloads.
Prepare the rain audio and video
Use a continuous, rights-cleared source
Choose a rain recording and visuals you created or are authorized to transmit and archive. Permission to use a track or video in an ordinary upload does not necessarily cover a continuous livestream and its archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators represent that they have the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights. Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and resolve rights before going live.

Make the loop seamless
Use a continuous audio track and a simple visual—such as a still image or looping rain scene—that your encoder can repeat without a visible jump or a gap in sound. Listen and watch through at least one complete loop before streaming. A short test can expose clicks at audio boundaries, abrupt changes in rain volume, a frozen image, or an unintended blank interval. The exact process for making and looping a file depends on the editing and encoder software you choose; test the final exported file rather than assuming its loop point is clean.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Confirm eligibility. Sign in to YouTube and check that live streaming is available for your verified channel and that there are no applicable restrictions.
- Create the stream in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and configure a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key; exact labels may change, so follow the current encoder livestream instructions.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in a video, screenshot, shared configuration, or public repository.
- Use the preview before making the stream public. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the audio is audible, the picture is moving or displaying as intended, and the title, visibility, and other stream details are correct.
Choose a conservative stream profile
For an initial test, use 720p at 30 frames per second (720p30). YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists a 2 Mbps video bitrate target for that profile. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that your network or Pi can sustain it; use the stream-health readout and your own representative tests to validate the setup. Check the current YouTube encoder settings.

| Setting | Starting point or guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p30 for an initial test | Confirm the preview is clear and the encoder sustains the output. A higher resolution is not automatically better for a mostly static ambience scene. |
| Video bitrate | 2 Mbps target for 720p30 in YouTube’s guidance | Use the encoder’s constant-bitrate option where available, and check stream health for dropped frames or unstable delivery. |
| Audio and video codecs | YouTube’s general guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio | Choose a combination supported by both your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport | Use the endpoint and protocol shown for your stream in Live Control Room. |
| Keyframe interval | Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance | Set the interval in the encoder if it exposes the control; confirm it matches the platform’s current requirement rather than guessing. |
Encoder recommendations can change. Check YouTube’s current settings before settling on a profile, particularly if you change resolution, frame rate, codec, or transport.
Check upload capacity, power, and cooling
Budget for upload, not download
The outgoing stream uses your connection’s upload capacity. YouTube recommends at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises testing with representative audio and video. For a 2 Mbps video stream, calculate headroom against the total outgoing bitrate, including audio, rather than treating the video target as the entire connection load. Other devices and network activity can reduce the capacity available to the Pi. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
Raspberry Pi 5 has Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi, but those specifications do not establish real-world performance at your installation location. If possible, test using the connection and network conditions the stream will actually use; wired Ethernet avoids relying on Wi-Fi coverage but does not eliminate upstream congestion or service interruptions.
Keep the board powered and ventilated
Use a supply compatible with the board; Raspberry Pi recommends 5V/5A for Pi 5. Consider active cooling for sustained workloads, and install the board where air can circulate. A stream that starts successfully is not proof that the board, power supply, or cooling will remain adequate under continuous load.

Test before leaving it unattended
- Run the final rain audio and video through the selected encoder for a representative test, not merely a static setup screen.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators for delivery problems, and confirm the audio level and picture at the viewer end. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the preview and stream setup workflow.
- Observe at least one full audio/video loop and check for gaps, sudden volume changes, visual glitches, or a source that stops advancing.
- Test how you will recover from an encoder exit, network interruption, or power loss. The sources here do not establish a specific Pi service manager, watchdog, or automatic restart method; validate your chosen software’s behavior instead of assuming it will resume correctly.
- Monitor the stream after launch. YouTube advises creators to monitor stream quality, and a 24/7 broadcast needs ongoing attention; no configuration described here guarantees uninterrupted operation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Eligibility, stream key, server URL, or encoder connection | Check channel live-stream access, recopy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, and make sure they are in the correct encoder fields. Treat an exposed key as compromised and replace it through YouTube’s controls. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Upload capacity, network variability, or encoder load | Check actual upload availability, reduce competing network traffic, and test again with at least YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total outgoing bitrate. If needed, lower the profile and verify the new stream in the preview. |
| Video is present but rain audio is missing or clipped | Source selection, audio codec configuration, or loop boundary | Check the encoder’s selected audio input and codec, listen to the exported source, and inspect the loop boundary for a cut or silence. |
| Image freezes or the source stops looping | Media playback or encoder handling of the source | Test the file and loop behavior locally, then run a full end-to-end test. Confirm that the encoder is still sending video rather than only keeping its interface open. |
| Pi becomes unstable during a long run | Power, cooling, storage, or sustained encoding load | Check the supply against the board’s recommendation, improve ventilation or use active cooling, inspect storage and system behavior, and try a less demanding stream profile. The cited specifications do not diagnose an individual installation. |
Cost and practical trade-offs
A Pi-based setup puts the encoder and its power, storage, cooling, and network requirements at your location. You retain control over the files and local configuration, but the stream depends on the Pi and your home internet connection staying available. The available sources do not establish a 24/7 power cost or reliability figure for a particular setup; measure your own installation rather than assuming a savings or uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a Pi or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your rain video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud; it is for pre-recorded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
