For a prerecorded playlist sent to YouTube Live through an encoder, use CBR (constant bitrate). YouTube’s published Live encoder settings specify CBR. Its recommendation for VBR applies to uploading a video file—a different delivery path.

Why the delivery path decides

A prerecorded video sent as a live feed is still an encoder-to-Live stream. The fact that its content was recorded earlier does not make it a normal video-file upload. Choose the setting for the way you deliver the video:

Delivery path YouTube bitrate guidance Which setting to follow
Encoder feed to YouTube Live CBR Use the Live encoder recommendation.
Video file uploaded to YouTube VBR Use the upload encoding recommendations for that file.

Sources: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”, and “YouTube recommended upload encoding settings”. These workflows should not be conflated: upload guidance does not replace YouTube’s Live ingest setting.

What CBR and VBR mean

CBR: steadier bitrate

CBR aims to keep the encoded stream’s bitrate steady over time. YouTube lists CBR as its Live encoder setting.

VBR: bitrate varies with content

VBR varies bitrate with content complexity. YouTube recommends it for uploaded video files, not as the published setting for an encoder feed to Live.

YouTube’s official pages do not provide a controlled comparison showing that one mode produces better picture quality or bandwidth results across every encoder and prerecorded-playlist setup. The practical decision is therefore to follow the recommendation for your delivery path, rather than assume that CBR inherently improves quality or that every third-party encoder handles VBR identically.

Choose the Live bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate

CBR is a bitrate mode, not a bitrate value. Once you select CBR, match the bitrate to the video codec, resolution, and frame rate being ingested. YouTube’s current Live settings page lists these H.264 recommendations:

H.264 video format YouTube-recommended Live bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube-published recommendations, not independent measurements or guarantees of a particular viewer experience. YouTube also publishes codec-specific guidance for other resolutions and frame rates, including AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Check the Live settings table for the row that matches your ingest format; figures may change.

Configure and test the playlist stream

  1. Choose the ingest format. Set the codec, resolution, and frame rate your encoder will send. YouTube’s Live guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP or RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
  2. Set bitrate encoding to CBR. Enter the YouTube-recommended bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  3. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  4. Check audio settings. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as audio options; codec-specific limitations can apply to some configurations, so verify the applicable details on the Live settings page.
  5. Confirm upload capacity. The available outbound bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare bandwidth. If the connection is shared or variable, account for that when deciding whether it can sustain the selected setting.
  6. Test before relying on the playlist. Run a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and checking the feed rather than assuming that a configured bitrate alone guarantees a stable broadcast.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; the encoder’s ingest setting is still your responsibility. See YouTube Help’s Live encoder settings and “Streaming tips”.

Choose how to keep a prerecorded playlist live

You can send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live using software or standalone hardware encoders, or use a cloud workflow for continuous prerecorded streaming. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes encoder options and lists a cloud service as an example; it is not a requirement for selecting CBR.
