First find out where the volume change happens. Measure the station’s signal before and after its own processing and encoder, then compare that output with YouTube playback at the same listening level. If the station feed is steady but YouTube sounds different, check YouTube’s player audio settings before changing the station’s processing: YouTube may apply playback-side enhancements, and they do not affect every video.
Separate station-side level changes from YouTube playback changes
A listener hearing a shift in YouTube does not by itself show that the station’s source level or encoder output changed. Check the same material at two points: the station’s output after processing and encoding, and the YouTube player. Keep playback volume matched as closely as possible so a device or player-volume difference does not masquerade as a change in the feed.
- Check the station feed. Meter the output after the station’s processing and encoder. Compare quiet and loud sections, transitions, speech, music, jingles, and adverts.
- Check YouTube playback. Listen to the same passage in the player and note whether the change occurs there, in the station feed, or in both.
- Inspect playback settings. When available, check Stable volume and Voice boost. If the feed is steady but the player differs, changing station processing may make the source less consistent rather than solve the playback-side cause.
What YouTube’s audio controls can change
YouTube says its audio enhancements may include automatic volume-level and sound-mixing adjustments, Stable volume to reduce differences between quiet and loud parts, and Voice boost to reduce background sound and highlight speech. These enhancements are not applied to every video.
Stable volume is on by default when watching videos where it is available, according to YouTube Help. It is not available on every video and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos. Viewers can toggle it in the player settings. Voice boost is also unavailable for some videos; when it is on, Stable volume turns off.

Channel owners can manage whether enhancements apply to future uploads in YouTube Studio. That setting does not affect ads or videos already uploaded, and viewer accessibility settings may take precedence. These playback features are separate from the station’s loudness target: YouTube does not document a universal numeric LUFS mastering target for radio streams.
Measure loudness, dynamics, and peaks separately
Use a loudness meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak; keep loudness range in view when preserving programme dynamics matters. Integrated loudness helps describe the overall level across a programme, loudness range describes variation over time, and true peak helps identify peaks that can be missed by ordinary sample-peak readings. They answer different questions, so one measurement cannot replace the others.

For broadcast workflows, EBU R 128 version 5.0 (November 2023) recommends an average programme loudness of -23 LUFS and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. Treat -23 LUFS as an EBU broadcast recommendation, not as a YouTube-specific target. EBU TECH 3401 version 2.0 (November 2023) covers loudness normalization and level control in radio production and distribution workflows, including metering, FM, Internet streaming, DAB, and media players. EBU R 128 S2 version 3 (November 2023) provides a loudness-based levelling approach for streaming and notes that streaming platforms typically use a higher target loudness level than broadcast standards. That is a reason to treat broadcast and platform delivery as distinct contexts, not to assume one number is right for both.
AES AESTD1008 version 1.21-9, published 24 September 2021, addresses loudness normalization, dynamic-range management, metadata, peak control, and playback considerations for Internet audio streaming and on-demand distribution. Standards and guidance are useful references, but they do not replace local regulatory requirements, platform rules, or decisions about the sound the station intends to deliver.

Choose normalization or real-time correction for the type of feed
File-based normalization for prepared material
When programmes or tracks are available as files before broadcast, measure and align them ahead of time. This lets you compare source material and correct level mismatches before they reach the live chain. Preserve deliberate contrasts—such as a quiet spoken introduction followed by music—instead of forcing every moment to the same loudness.
Real-time correction for live feeds
For live content, real-time loudness-correction hardware or software can reduce level drift when file-based normalization is not possible. It cannot predict upcoming programme content, however, and may override an intentional change in loudness. AES describes an analysis period of 30 seconds to two minutes as a typical balance between controlling average loudness and preserving natural dynamics; longer integration times tend to sound more natural, with fewer audible artifacts. These are guidance values, not guaranteed settings for every format or chain.

- Rolls Stereo Program Limiter (Sl33B)
Whenever gain is applied, provide appropriate peak limiting and verify the result with a true-peak meter. A compressor or limiter can be one part of a real-time control chain, but it is not a substitute for loudness measurement or careful setup. Choose processing conservatively and listen for pumping, flattened dynamics, or transitions that sound unnaturally abrupt.

- Meter the programme. Measure integrated loudness and true peak across representative material, not just the loudest peaks. Track loudness range if the programme’s dynamics matter. Use EBU R 128 as a broadcast reference when appropriate to your station and market.
- Locate the point of change. Compare the signal before and after station processing and encoding, then compare the encoded output with YouTube playback. Check the YouTube player’s Stable volume and Voice boost settings and, if you control the channel, the relevant enhancement setting before adjusting the station chain.
- Align upstream elements. Check source files, voices, music, jingles, adverts, and transitions in the station chain. Correct inconsistent source levels where practical rather than asking a limiter to repair every mismatch.
- Set live correction cautiously. If the programme is live, choose a correction approach and analysis period that reduce unwanted drift without erasing intended changes in dynamics. Listen through representative speech and music passages.
- Control and verify peaks. Apply appropriate peak control after gain changes and recheck true peak at the output. Confirm that the meter remains within the limits required by your own delivery chain and market.
- Audition in context. Compare speech, music, jingles, adverts, and transitions at matched playback volume. Listen for pumping, excessive loudness changes, or lost contrast; compare the station output and YouTube playback separately.
Troubleshooting common volume problems
| What you hear or measure | Likely place to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The station output is steady, but YouTube playback sounds different. | YouTube player enhancements or viewer settings. | Check Stable volume and Voice boost where available, and compare playback at matched volume before changing the station chain. |
| Speech, tracks, or programme segments jump in level in both the station output and YouTube. | Source material, transitions, or station processing. | Measure representative elements, align source levels upstream, and reassess the processing chain. |
| Average loudness seems controlled, but peaks are too high after gain is added. | Peak control after gain changes. | Use appropriate limiting and verify the output with a true-peak meter. |
| Level correction sounds as if it is pumping or suppresses planned changes. | Overly aggressive real-time correction or an analysis period that is too short for the material. | Reduce the correction’s aggressiveness, consider a longer analysis period, and audition whether the intended dynamics return. |
| Stable volume is missing, or Voice boost is enabled and Stable volume cannot be selected. | Feature availability or interaction in the player. | Not every video supports these features; Voice boost turns Stable volume off while active. Do not treat the missing control as proof that the station signal changed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your YouTube radio channel uses prepared recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream. It does not process or normalize audio, and it is not a live microphone or camera setup, so you still need to prepare and meter the audio in your production chain. The steps are upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live.
