Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A target may resume when its configured source returns, but an outgoing target in Error may need investigation and a controlled retry. Do not assume every disconnect requires a restart—or that every Wowza version uses the same restart API.
Identify the failure before restarting
Wowza’s YouTube streaming guide, updated August 7, 2026, recommends checking both the incoming stream and the destination target. The distinction matters: restarting a healthy target will not fix a missing source, while a source that is flowing normally does not explain a target stuck in an error state.
- Source-side failure: the encoder or other publisher stopped sending media to Wowza, or the incoming stream is missing.
- Destination-side failure: Wowza is receiving the source, but cannot connect to YouTube through the Stream Target.
Check the incoming stream and target status
- In Engine Manager, open Incoming Streams and locate the expected input. Check that it is Active and receiving data. If it is absent or stopped, restore the encoder, camera, or other publisher first; an outgoing target cannot send media Wowza is not receiving.
- Check that Stream Targets are enabled for the application and that the specific YouTube target is enabled. Read its status before intervening:
- Waiting means the target is enabled but is not yet pushing because its source is not connected or the target connection is initializing. Check the input and allow initialization; Waiting alone does not establish a permanent failure.
- Active means Wowza is connected and actively pushing to the destination.
- Error means Wowza could not connect to the YouTube destination. If the input is Active too, investigate the outgoing path.
If the source disconnected, restore it first
Recover the source publisher and confirm that it is publishing the expected stream name into Wowza. A Wowza Community response reports that a configured target can wait for its named source and resume broadcasting when that source reappears. Treat that as community guidance, not a guarantee for every Engine release or configuration: observe the target state and confirm the result in YouTube rather than repeatedly restarting it.
If the target is in Error while the source is Active
- Compare the target’s destination host, application, and generated stream key or name with the current event in YouTube Live Control Room. Wowza’s guide describes the YouTube destination as an RTMP connection, normally using port 1935. Keep the stream key private; do not paste it into logs, tickets, or public messages.
- Review Wowza logs around the disconnect for the connection error, and check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest feedback or event problems.
- Correct any wrong or stale destination details before retrying. A restart cannot repair an invalid key, unreachable destination, or incompatible media format.
- Once the source and destination details are confirmed, retry the target using the controls or API documented for your installed Wowza Streaming Engine version. The available documentation and community reports do not establish one universal target-restart endpoint or script.
- Confirm both sides after the retry: Wowza should report the target as Active, and the YouTube event should show an incoming preview.
Automate retries carefully
For a confirmed destination-side failure, an external monitor can check the source and target states, record transitions, and initiate a limited retry when the source is live. A Wowza Community report suggests API automation for an errored destination, but it does not provide a verified implementation that applies to every Engine version. Consult the REST API reference for the installed version before building calls.

- CERTIFIED TO WORK with T-Mobile, AT&T and US Cellular. Requires a Nano SIM card from one of three certified carriers.
- Retry only when the source is active and the destination failure is confirmed.
- Set a retry limit and backoff rather than issuing a rapid, endless restart loop.
- Log each status change and retry outcome, and alert an operator if the target remains in Error.
- Protect credentials and stream keys; avoid recording secrets in monitoring output.
If you do not know the Engine version, target configuration, or cause shown in the logs, do not deploy a guessed API endpoint. Verify those details first.
Rule out an ingest-format problem
Repeated short connections can point to a persistent media-format problem rather than a transient disconnect. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend a 2-second keyframe interval and say not to exceed 4 seconds. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Wowza’s YouTube guide states: “Your video stream must include audio.” For a video-only source, its guide points to ModuleAddAudioTrack. Fix a recurring format issue instead of repeatedly restarting the target.

Troubleshooting by what you see
| Observation | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming stream is missing or not Active | A source-to-Wowza publishing problem. | Restore the publisher and verify the expected input name and status. |
| Target is Waiting | The source may not be connected, or the target may still be initializing. | Check the incoming stream and allow initialization; do not treat Waiting alone as a confirmed failure. |
| Source is Active; target is Error | Wowza could not connect to YouTube. | Check host, application, key or name, logs, and destination availability; then consider a version-appropriate bounded retry. |
| Target is Active, but YouTube preview is absent | Wowza’s status has not confirmed that the YouTube event is receiving media. | Check the Live Control Room event settings and ingest feedback. |
| Connections repeatedly drop after briefly succeeding | An ingest configuration or media-format issue is one possible cause. | Verify keyframe interval, supported codec and audio presence against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
