Wowza nDVR and YouTube Live DVR are separate features. Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records an incoming live stream for time-shift playback through Wowza’s HLS or MPEG-DASH output; YouTube has its own live DVR controls for people watching on YouTube. Available documentation does not establish that Wowza’s rewind window or controls carry through to the YouTube player.

Before configuring anything, confirm whether you use Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video and where viewers will watch. The procedures differ, and the exact current Wowza-to-YouTube ingest route is not established by the documentation cited here. Do not assume a Wowza nDVR setting enables rewind on YouTube.

What Wowza nDVR does—and what it does not establish for YouTube

Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records a live source and makes recorded material available for pause, rewind, and resume through Wowza-served playback. The documented playback protocols are HLS and MPEG-DASH. Its application settings and DVR playback URLs apply to that Wowza playback path.

YouTube Live DVR is a separate viewer feature. YouTube says viewers can pause and rewind a live stream when live DVR is available and enabled; if the creator disables it, viewers cannot seek back while the stream is live, although a recording may be available after the stream ends. See YouTube’s live DVR help. The documentation does not say Wowza nDVR settings control YouTube’s player.

  • If your audience watches a Wowza HLS or DASH output, configure and test Wowza nDVR for that destination.
  • If your audience watches on YouTube, check YouTube’s live DVR setting for the broadcast. Do not use Wowza’s DVR playback URL as a substitute for YouTube DVR.
  • If you need both destinations, treat them as separate playback paths and test each one independently.

Choose the correct Wowza configuration path

Product Where the setting lives What it controls
Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR configuration on a live application Recording and DVR playback for Wowza output, including HLS or MPEG-DASH
Wowza Video Playlist Seconds on a Wowza CDN stream target The rewind depth for the applicable Wowza Video playback path

Do not combine the Streaming Engine application settings and DVR query-parameter workflow with Wowza Video’s Playlist Seconds setting. Identify your product and intended player before following the steps below.

Configure nDVR in Wowza Streaming Engine

  1. Start with a working live application. Confirm that your source can publish to the intended Wowza Streaming Engine live application and that basic live playback works before adding recording. The available documentation does not establish the current endpoint, stream-key procedure, or encoder profile for sending that source onward to YouTube; consult the current instructions for your actual route rather than guessing.
  2. Enable nDVR in Manager. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, select the live application, open nDVR, enable the feature, and restart the application or Engine as prompted.
  3. Choose the recording store and playback behavior. Configure the DVR store directory and the recording and playback options. The “All material available” behavior makes the entire recording available and preserves it after the stream ends. A “Use window duration” behavior exposes a rolling window and purges older material outside that window. Wowza’s setup article states a minimum rolling-window duration of 60 seconds.
  4. Set URL and mode options deliberately. The application configuration determines whether a DVR query parameter is required in playback URLs and whether the application supports live and DVR streaming. Follow the setting descriptions for your installed version and use the required parameter when testing DVR playback.
  5. Save and restart. Apply the configuration and restart as required by the Manager workflow.
  6. Test recording and playback separately. Publish the source, confirm the live output, then test recorded time-shift playback using HLS or MPEG-DASH. Wowza’s guide says RTMP and RTSP do not support DVR playback.

Wowza also documents an XML configuration route. It requires the DVR recorder and store settings plus the DVR streaming packetizer, alongside packetizers for the output protocols. Use the configuration reference for the deployed version; do not copy an XML fragment from another version without validating its application and protocol settings.

Configure Wowza Video separately

For Wowza Video, the documented control is Playlist Seconds on a Wowza CDN stream target. Wowza’s documentation accessed in 2026 gives an accepted range of 6 to 28,800 seconds (8 hours) and states a default of 100 seconds. The Video REST API describes the related playlistSeconds property. These values describe Wowza Video’s setting, not a YouTube DVR window.

Wowza warns that support varies by player and that nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. Confirm the intended player supports the feature and test it before relying on rewind during a scheduled broadcast. See Wowza Video’s Playlist Seconds configuration documentation and its REST API documentation.

Check source compatibility, timing, and license

  • Audio and video alignment: Wowza says incoming audio and video must be aligned; short keyframe intervals and aligned audio/video work best.
  • Codecs: The quick-start lists H.264 video, AAC audio, and MP3 audio among supported stream types or codecs. Unsupported source codecs can prevent recording. Transcoding may help where it is supported for the ingest path, but verify your actual configuration.
  • MPEG-DASH version: Wowza’s documentation specifies Wowza Streaming Engine 4.7.6 or later for MPEG-DASH nDVR. Check the installed version and current product documentation before relying on this requirement.
  • License: Wowza says perpetual and subscription licenses enable integrated nDVR. Older licenses purchased before 2015 may require contacting Wowza; confirm the entitlement on your deployment.

These are Wowza nDVR requirements and compatibility notes. They do not establish YouTube’s current ingest requirements or confirm that a given stream target can sustain a continuous YouTube broadcast.

Plan for a 24/7 operation

A continuous schedule makes reconnects, recording retention, disk use, and monitoring operational requirements rather than one-time setup details. Wowza warns that nDVR recording may be interrupted when the live source disconnects. Its documentation describes a default stream timeout of five minutes to accommodate encoder disconnects and restarts. Validate reconnect behavior and recording continuity with your source and deployment before relying on it around the clock.

The available Wowza documentation does not provide a storage-capacity formula. Estimate retention needs from the actual source bitrate, recording format, and desired history, then monitor the configured store and test what happens when storage fills. Keep an independent archive if uninterrupted recording or long-term retention matters.

Wowza Video’s API description uses “24×7 channel” to mean unlimited stream time for one channel. That wording alone does not establish YouTube ingest constraints or guarantee uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Verify your current product-specific YouTube route and test a long-running session before scheduling a broadcast.

Before you rely on the setup

  • Identify whether the deployment is Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video.
  • Decide whether rewind is needed on Wowza playback, YouTube, or both.
  • Check that YouTube live DVR is enabled if viewers need to seek backward on YouTube.
  • Validate source codecs, audio/video alignment, and keyframe behavior for Wowza recording.
  • Test encoder disconnects, reconnects, application restarts, recording retention, and disk capacity.
  • Confirm the current Wowza-to-YouTube ingest method, stream settings, and recovery behavior for the chosen product; do not infer them from nDVR configuration.

Troubleshooting common nDVR problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No DVR playback or the URL behaves like live-only playback The playback path may not support DVR, or the required DVR query parameter may be missing. Use HLS or MPEG-DASH, check the application’s DVR URL setting, and test with the query parameter when required. RTMP and RTSP are not supported for Wowza DVR playback.
The stream plays but no recording is available nDVR may not be enabled or applied, the source may disconnect, or the input may use an unsupported codec. Confirm nDVR is enabled on the correct live application and changes were saved and restarted. Check source compatibility and review logs and recording-store availability.
Recording stops after a source interruption Wowza documents that a source disconnect can interrupt nDVR recording. Test the encoder’s reconnect behavior and the documented five-minute default timeout in your deployment; verify recording resumes and inspect the resulting playback.
Viewers can rewind on Wowza but not on YouTube These are separate DVR features and the documentation does not establish that Wowza controls reach YouTube. Check YouTube’s own live DVR setting and test with a viewer on YouTube. Keep Wowza playback tests separate.
Wowza Video rewind is unavailable in a player Player support varies; Wowza says nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. Test a supported intended player before the broadcast and verify the configured Playlist Seconds property.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a Wowza nDVR configuration. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video going to YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
