Google lists VM-to-YouTube transfer among transfers to named Google services that have no charge, but that rule does not make every network path in a streaming setup free. Your estimate still depends on the VM region and type, how long it runs, disk choice and size, and any traffic sent elsewhere.
Build the estimate from three cost components
Use this as the structure for an estimate, not as a quoted price:
Estimated total = VM charges + disk charges + applicable network transfer charges.
Compute Engine VM pricing does not include disk, images, or networking. Google publishes those cost categories separately, so a VM’s displayed price alone is not the full workload estimate. See Google’s VM instance pricing, disk and image pricing, and network pricing.

VM runtime
Choose the VM region and machine type, then estimate billed hours. Include time when the VM remains running outside the broadcast; the instance is not necessarily used only while YouTube is live. Compute charges depend on the configuration and usage, and billing currency or applicable discounts and credits may affect the final bill. Google’s pricing overview displays USD, but your billing currency can differ.
Disk and images
Specify the disk type and provisioned capacity. Include additional images or snapshots if they are part of the workload. Disk and image charges are separate from VM charges; consult Google’s disk and image pricing for the relevant options and calculator guidance.

Network transfer
Record the expected outbound data volume and its destination. Google lists VM transfer to specific Google products, including YouTube, as having no charge under its network pricing rules. This is specifically a rule for transfer from a VM to the named destination; do not assume it covers traffic to other internet destinations or every transfer in a broader architecture. Check Google Cloud network pricing for the destination and traffic category that actually apply.
Inputs to collect before using Google’s calculator
- Region and machine type: Select the VM location and machine family/type you plan to run.
- Runtime: Estimate billed hours, including idle or off-air time when the VM will stay on.
- Storage: Choose disk type and provisioned size; include images and snapshots if needed.
- Traffic: Estimate outbound volume and identify each destination. Separate YouTube-bound VM traffic from other destinations.
- Billing context: Note billing currency and any discounts or credits that may affect the bill.
Enter the actual configuration in the Google Cloud pricing calculator. Google publishes region- and machine-specific prices, so a universal monthly total—or a claim that one configuration is cheapest—would not be reliable without these inputs.

Check bandwidth capacity separately from its price
A bandwidth limit answers whether a VM configuration can sustain the intended stream; it is not a per-gigabyte charge. Google’s documentation describes maximum egress rates by VM instance, machine series, and destination, and says bandwidth is accounted for per VM rather than per vNIC or IP address. Use the network bandwidth documentation to check capacity, and the network pricing page to determine charges. Both questions matter: a transfer destination may have a particular pricing treatment, while the VM still has a capacity ceiling.
Use the right units
For the relevant Compute Engine quantities, Google uses binary units: 1 GiB = 230 bytes, and 1 TiB = 240 bytes (1,024 GiB). These definitions are stated in Google’s current pricing documentation, accessed October 3, 2026; use the units shown in the pricing pages when entering or comparing quantities.

Common estimating mistakes
- Counting only the VM: VM prices exclude disk, images, and networking. Add the applicable separate categories.
- Treating every transfer as free: The no-charge rule cited here applies to VM transfer to named Google products such as YouTube, not all destinations or traffic paths.
- Using bandwidth limits as billing rates: Capacity limits and network charges are different measures; consult their respective documentation.
- Ignoring runtime beyond the broadcast: If the instance stays on while the stream is offline, include that time in the runtime estimate.
- Comparing configurations without matching inputs: Region, machine type, disk, runtime, and destination can differ. Compare them with the same workload assumptions in the calculator.
