Short answer: Wowza’s documented YouTube workflows cover forwarding an already-live source through Wowza Streaming Engine and sending a Wowza Video stream to YouTube. Wowza Video Legacy also documents hosted file inputs and a 24×7 channel mode. Those separate facts do not establish that a prerecorded file automatically loops or that a playlist can run continuously. If you need a verified, unattended prerecorded-video loop, confirm Wowza’s current looping support and setup with Wowza before relying on it.
First, identify which Wowza product you are using
“Wowza” can mean different products with different workflows. Wowza Streaming Engine documents forwarding an incoming source stream to a YouTube Live target. Wowza Video Legacy documents publicly accessible file inputs and a separate 24×7 channel mode. Neither workflow should be assumed to provide the other product’s controls.
For a prerecorded video to run unattended, there must be a playout mechanism that feeds the video continuously—by repeating the file or moving through a playlist. The cited Wowza documentation does not verify that end-to-end mechanism for a 24×7 YouTube stream. The procedure below therefore explains the documented connection to YouTube, not an unverified file-looping recipe.
What Wowza documents for a 24×7 file source
Wowza Video Legacy’s setup reference lists “Stream from File” inputs as publicly accessible .mp3 or H.264-encoded .mp4/.flv files reachable over HTTP, HTTPS, GS, or S3. It separately describes a 24×7 channel as an always-on billing mode. Wowza defines the purpose as: “A 24×7 channel is for always on, as opposed to a single live stream for a single event.”

Check current Wowza documentation or support for your account before building a file-based continuous channel.
Connect an incoming Wowza Streaming Engine source to YouTube
This documented route forwards an incoming, already-live source stream—such as a camera or encoder feed—to YouTube Live. It does not explain how to schedule or repeat a prerecorded file.

- Create the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and copy its Stream URL and stream name/key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Open or create a Live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine, select an existing Live application or create one if needed.
- Add a YouTube Live Stream Target. In the application’s Stream Targets settings, add a target and choose YouTube Live.
- Enter the source and destination details. Set the source stream name, YouTube destination host and application, and destination stream key. The destination application is the portion that appears after the host in the YouTube Stream URL; the target’s application instance can be left blank. Wowza’s guide uses the default RTMP port, 1935.
- Enable the target. Enable Stream Targets for the application and enable the individual YouTube target. Restart the application if Wowza prompts you to do so.
- Start and verify the source. Start the incoming source stream. Confirm Wowza reports an active stream and target, then check that YouTube Live Control Room displays a preview. The stream must include audio.
Do not treat a successful target connection as proof of a 24/7 prerecorded loop: the documented Streaming Engine setup forwards a running source, and does not configure a file playlist or repeat function.
Send a Wowza Video stream to YouTube
Wowza Video’s YouTube-specific guide describes a separate hosted-video workflow. It directs users to create a YouTube live stream, choose the highest available output rendition in Wowza Video, and add an external service using provider RTMP. Enter YouTube’s primary Stream URL and stream key; an optional backup URL is available for redundancy.

That guide says YouTube performs transcoding for this route. Its published requirements are a maximum output of 2160 (3840×2160) at 60 fps, with an I-frame at least every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. These are requirements in Wowza’s guide updated 2025-02-24, not a guarantee of current YouTube settings. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and confirm your Wowza plan supports the intended configuration before production.
These Wowza Video output settings explain how to send a Wowza stream to YouTube; they do not establish that a hosted file will loop in a 24×7 channel. Verify file playout, repeat behavior, and any plan restrictions directly with Wowza.

Check YouTube rights and channel suitability
Before scheduling any long-running stream, make sure you have the rights to every video and audio element, including music, images, and material supplied by others. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it contains content that triggers a rights claim. YouTube also assesses channels for monetization under its own policies; continuous availability alone does not establish eligibility, and reused or repetitive material can create monetization concerns. Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot the documented connection
- YouTube shows no preview: Check that the source is running, the Wowza target is enabled, and the host, application, and key match the values from YouTube Studio. Confirm the target status in Wowza.
- The target does not connect: Recheck the destination URL components and stream key, including whether the application is entered separately from the host. Use the default RTMP port 1935 unless your configuration requires otherwise.
- Video appears without sound: Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide says the stream must include audio. Check the incoming source’s audio track and confirm it is being forwarded.
- The stream stops when a file ends: The cited Wowza documentation does not establish automatic file repetition. Do not assume that a 24×7 billing mode restarts the file; ask Wowza whether your product and plan support looping or playlists and how to configure them.
- You need a specific resolution or frame rate: Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements and the output limits of the particular Wowza product and plan. The Wowza Video Legacy reference specifically says its 24×7 mode does not support 4K.
