Convert every video in the playlist to one chosen constant frame rate before it reaches your live encoder, then keep timestamps and audio continuous across clip boundaries. This gives the encoder one stable output cadence instead of asking it to switch timing regimes from clip to clip. Frame-rate conversion alone cannot fix incorrect timestamps or audio drift, so test both at transitions before relying on the stream.

Why mixed frame rates can disrupt a continuous stream

A playlist may combine footage recorded at 24, 25, 29.97, 30, or other frame rates. If the live output follows each file’s native cadence, the encoder may receive changing timing characteristics as clips switch. That can cause uneven motion; timestamp problems or separate audio-timing issues can also create sync errors.

The practical goal is a stable output frame rate across the entire live feed. Choose it for the content and intended output, convert each item to it before live ingest, and verify the joins. There is no universal target rate for every mixed-rate library.

Choose a conversion method and target frame rate

Choose one output cadence

Pick a target such as 25, 30, or 60 fps based on the playlist’s motion and the output you want. These are possible choices, not a universal recommendation. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps; that ceiling does not mean every source should be converted to 60 fps. Increasing the output rate can duplicate or synthesize frames without adding real motion detail.

Drop or duplicate frames with FFmpeg’s fps filter

For conventional constant-frame-rate conversion, FFmpeg’s fps filter drops or duplicates frames to reach the target cadence. This preserves the basic character of the original motion, though conversion can make judder more noticeable in some footage. Check representative movement rather than assuming the result will look right.

Interpolate frames with FFmpeg’s framerate filter

FFmpeg’s framerate filter interpolates new frames. Interpolation may make some motion appear smoother, but it can introduce visual artifacts or alter the way movement looks. Test it on the actual material before using it throughout a playlist. FFmpeg’s documentation says interlaced content should be deinterlaced before applying this filter, then re-interlaced afterward if needed. See the FFmpeg filters documentation for filter behavior and options.

Prepare the files before live ingest

  1. Inventory the playlist. Inspect each file’s actual frame cadence, duration, dimensions, audio streams, timestamp behavior, and whether it is progressive or interlaced. Do not rely only on filenames or labels from an export preset.
  2. Select one target frame rate. Decide on a single output cadence for the channel based on the material’s motion and intended presentation.
  3. Normalize every item. Apply the chosen conversion consistently to each file before it reaches the live encoder. Use fps for drop/duplicate conversion, or test framerate if interpolation is intentional.
  4. Check clip timing and audio. Inspect the beginning and end of each file and the transitions between files. Confirm that audio neither restarts nor overlaps unexpectedly, and check lip sync where there is speech.
  5. Configure one stable encoder output. Keep frame rate, resolution, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval consistent regardless of each source file’s original settings.

FFmpeg documents setpts=PTS-STARTPTS for aligning starting timestamps in a multi-input filter scenario where inputs begin at different presentation timestamps. That is an example for a specific timing problem, not a universal command to add blindly to every playlist. Diagnose the timestamps and filter graph before changing them. FFmpeg also documents separate audio and video timestamp filters, reflecting that video cadence and audio timing require their own checks.

Set the live encoder for YouTube

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommended bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate appropriate to your specific output; do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Send one consistent frame rate and resolution for the whole broadcast.
  • Use a supported codec and RTMP or RTMPS ingest.
  • Set CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds where possible; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • Choose the bitrate using YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.

A hardware encoder can simplify a dedicated installation, while a software encoder such as FFmpeg offers filter control. Neither approach automatically normalizes mixed-rate sources: normalize the feed and configure the output deliberately either way.

Test transitions, audio, and recovery

Make a test playlist that includes the kinds of movement, audio, and frame-rate changes found in the real schedule. Watch representative sections and, especially, the points where one file ends and the next begins. Check for motion judder, interpolation artifacts if used, audio gaps or overlaps, lip-sync changes, and unexpected timestamp jumps.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health display and encoder messages. A short test can reveal obvious cadence or sync faults, but it cannot establish that an unattended stream will run reliably for days.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That documented behavior does not establish that one live session can run uninterrupted for 24/7. Test reconnection, session scheduling, archive consequences, and your restart plan in the actual channel and encoder environment. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common sync problems

Motion stutters or changes at a clip boundary

Likely cause: The output is inheriting different source cadences, or the conversion’s drop/duplicate pattern is conspicuous. Fix: Confirm that every playlist item is converted to the same target cadence and the encoder output does not change when a new file starts. Review the boundary at normal playback speed.

Interpolated motion looks warped

Likely cause: The framerate filter has generated frames that do not look natural for that scene. Fix: Try conventional fps conversion instead, or adjust and retest interpolation on representative motion. For interlaced content, follow FFmpeg’s deinterlacing and re-interlacing guidance.

Audio drifts or jumps while video cadence is stable

Likely cause: Audio timestamps, discontinuities, or how the playlist joins audio streams—not necessarily the video frame rate. Fix: Inspect audio timing independently, then check continuity and lip sync before and after transitions. Do not assume that a constant video frame rate repairs an audio timeline.

FFmpeg inputs start at different times

Likely cause: Their starting presentation timestamps are not aligned. Fix: Inspect input timestamps and the filter graph. In FFmpeg’s documented multi-input scenario, setpts=PTS-STARTPTS can align starts; apply it only when it fits the actual workflow.
