Set Windows active hours to cover the entire promotion, but do not treat that setting as a guarantee against a restart. If your encoder runs on the Windows PC, its feed will stop while that PC reboots. For stronger continuity, prepare and test an independent backup encoder before the event; if Windows restarts during the stream, restore the primary encoder or switch to that backup and verify the live player.
Before the promotion: reduce restart risk and prepare a backup
1. Set Windows active hours around the event
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Set the hours to cover setup, the whole promotion, and teardown. Active hours help prevent inconvenient restarts; they do not guarantee that every update can be deferred or that a stream cannot be interrupted. If this is a managed work PC and the controls are unavailable, ask the administrator about the update policy.
Windows 10 has different settings. Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; for a current production PC, prioritize Windows 11 or an appropriately supported Windows 10 servicing arrangement. See Microsoft’s active-hours guidance and Windows update instructions.
2. Install pending updates and restart before the event
Do not begin a high-stakes promotion with a pending restart if you can schedule maintenance earlier. After restarting, reopen the encoder and check the camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, and promotional media. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended scheduled YouTube event.

3. Make the backup independent of the Windows PC
A second encoder application running on the same computer cannot protect the stream from that computer rebooting. A meaningful backup needs a separate available path: for example, another computer running a compatible software encoder or a standalone hardware encoder. Check that it can use the required camera, audio, and graphics, and that it is configured for the same YouTube event. Decide in advance who will switch feeds and whether the change is manual or automatic; the exact behavior depends on the encoders and event configuration.
Test the switchover before the promotion. YouTube’s recommended test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player rolls over to the backup. Restore the primary and verify the normal path again. YouTube’s live streaming tips explain failover testing. Hardware encoders are an option, but YouTube does not endorse a particular model in that guidance; confirm compatibility with your production setup before buying.

4. Leave upload capacity for the feeds
YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the stream bitrate. If primary and backup feeds are transmitted simultaneously, include both feeds in the capacity calculation. Network interruptions can break a stream, so test from the actual event connection rather than assuming the backup will work under load.
5. Run a YouTube and production preflight
- Prepare the encoder well before the event and confirm its connection settings.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the scheduled event and wait for the preview/feed before starting. Check the audience-facing watch page.
- Monitor audio and video quality, and confirm the local recording file is growing if you are recording locally.
- Check that the operator can reach the backup controls and knows the switchover procedure.
If Windows restarts during the live promotion
- Let Windows finish booting. Sign in, reopen the encoder, and restore the camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, and promo media if they did not return automatically.
- Check the scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and see whether a preview/feed is arriving. The encoder uses a stream URL and stream key. If it reports a key error, copy the current key from the Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password/address for sending the feed.
- Reconnect and verify before assuming you are live. Start or reconnect the encoder, then check preview and stream health and follow the event’s configured go-live or auto-start behavior. Reopening the encoder does not necessarily restore the original live event automatically; this depends on the encoder and scheduled-stream setup.
- Use the tested backup if the primary is still down. Activate the independent backup and verify the audience-facing player. If viewers experienced an interruption, give a brief on-screen or spoken explanation.
- Check the recording afterward. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the promo has business value, keep a separate local recording too and verify that the resulting file plays.
Choose the continuity approach that fits the promotion
| Approach | What it protects against | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One Windows PC with planned maintenance | Reduces the chance of a scheduled restart interrupting the event. | The broadcast stops if that PC reboots; active hours are not an uninterrupted-stream guarantee. |
| Separate computer with a backup software encoder | Can provide a path independent of the primary Windows host, if configured and tested for the same event. | Adds equipment and setup; compatibility and switchover behavior depend on the production and encoder configuration. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Moves encoding off the Windows PC when the device supports the production chain. | Adds hardware cost and setup; it does not prevent Windows from updating, and no universal model is established here. |
Choose based on independence from the Windows host, camera/audio/overlay compatibility, manual versus automatic failover, network capacity, acceptable interruption, and budget. No backup is useful until you have tested that viewers actually receive it.

Copyright and promotional content checks
Before scheduling the promo, confirm that you have the rights needed for every video, image, music track, and other material in the stream. A valid stream key and a healthy preview do not establish that the content is cleared for broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming guidance covers stream setup and operational checks; review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and your own content licenses before going live.
