For YouTube Live at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, set OBS to a 50 Mbps video bitrate with H.264, or 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. A 100 Mbps connection can support either target if that is sustained, measured upload speed available to the stream—not merely the plan’s advertised download speed.
Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. They are published recommendations, not results from a test of a particular OBS version or connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| OBS setting | Recommended value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 3840 × 2160 | This is 4K/2160p. |
| Frame rate | 60 fps | YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. |
| Video encoder | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow. |
| Video bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps; AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps | YouTube also lists minima of 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Those are minimums, not the recommended targets. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Streaming protocol | RTMPS preferred | YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends the secure RTMPS option. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 128 kbps | Audio traffic is additional to the video bitrate. |
Set the values in OBS
OBS labels can vary slightly between versions and operating systems. The key is to match the output, encoder, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval to the values above.
- Set the video output. Open Settings → Video. Set the base and output resolution to 3840 × 2160 if your scene and encoder can handle it, and set the common FPS value to 60.
- Choose the encoder and bitrate. Open Settings → Output and select Advanced output mode if needed. In the streaming section, choose a supported H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 encoder. Set rate control to CBR. Enter 50,000 Kbps for H.264, or 35,000 Kbps for AV1/H.265.
- Set keyframes and audio. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Configure audio to AAC or MP3; for stereo, YouTube’s recommendation is 128 Kbps.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, or connect an account if you use OBS’s account integration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen. YouTube’s setup walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check the protocol and start a test. Use RTMPS when available in your setup. Start the stream privately or unlisted if appropriate, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages before broadcasting publicly.
Is 100 Mbps upload enough for 4K 60fps?
Yes, on paper, if 100 Mbps is the sustained upload speed actually available to OBS. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. Applied to a measured 100 Mbps upload, that leaves an approximate 80 Mbps budget for streaming—above both recommended video bitrates, with room for audio and ordinary variation. The 80 Mbps figure is arithmetic from YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a separate YouTube limit.

A plan advertised as “100 Mbps” may refer to download speed, or the upload may be lower, variable, or shared with other people and devices. Measure upload speed on the same connection and, ideally, at the time and place you will stream. YouTube advises accounting for other network users and testing in advance; its guidance is at Streaming tips.
- If measured upload is reliably near 100 Mbps and mostly dedicated to the stream, either codec’s recommended target fits within the approximate budget.
- If upload speed fluctuates or others use the connection, leave more margin rather than treating the full measured result as available to OBS.
- If the usable upload cannot sustain the target, reduce the video bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate; a nominal plan speed does not guarantee a stable broadcast.
Choosing H.264, H.265, or AV1
The main setting difference in YouTube’s recommendation is bitrate: 50 Mbps for H.264 versus 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps. Choose based on the encoder and workflow you can reliably use. The bitrate figures alone do not establish that one codec will look better in every scene or on every encoder.

- 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
Do not enter the AV1/H.265 bitrate while streaming H.264, or vice versa. Confirm the selected encoder in OBS before going live. If a codec is unavailable in the encoder options, use a supported alternative rather than assuming that a label in YouTube’s guidance means your particular hardware or software supports it.
Test the stream and understand latency
Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the planned content. Watch YouTube’s stream health and any messages while the test runs; a brief static scene may not reveal issues that occur during movement or complex audio. If the connection is shared or unstable, allow additional upload margin.

YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p streams: those streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency. If rapid audience interaction is more important than 4K, weigh that trade-off before choosing the output resolution.
YouTube can detect an encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically by default. For a custom stream key, YouTube’s documentation describes manually selecting the stream resolution in Live Control Room. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple viewer output formats, so the source settings you send are not the only playback resolution viewers may see.

Troubleshooting common 4K stream problems
- YouTube reports a bitrate that is too low or stream health is poor: Check actual upload speed and whether another device or user is consuming bandwidth. Confirm OBS is sending the intended bitrate and that your connection can sustain it; reduce bitrate or output demands if it cannot.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Network disruptions can break a live stream. Test on the broadcast connection, minimize competing network traffic, and leave more headroom than the approximate 20% baseline when conditions vary.
- The stream does not match the intended resolution or frame rate: Verify OBS’s output resolution and FPS, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room. With a custom stream key, consult YouTube’s resolution selection for that stream.
- The selected bitrate does not match YouTube’s recommendation: Confirm the active codec. Use 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K/60; the lower listed minima are not the recommended targets.
- The keyframe setting is rejected or inconsistent: Set the interval to 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- You cannot select low latency at 4K: This is a YouTube limitation for 4K/2160p, not an OBS fault. Use normal latency or consider a lower resolution if low latency is essential.
- YouTube warns about copyright or reused content: Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to use, including music and video. A technically valid encoder setup does not grant content rights or guarantee monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
