To loop a 10-hour rain video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, open the source properties, and turn on Loop. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then test the picture, sound, and stream health before going public.

Set up the rain video as a looping source

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, select or create a scene in the Scenes dock.
  2. Add the file. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and choose Media Source. Give it a name if prompted, then select the local 10-hour rain video file.
  3. Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS describes this setting as making the file play again after playback completes. It restarts the video at the end; it does not change or extend the file itself. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  4. Check the framing. In the preview, resize or position the source so it fills the canvas as intended. Confirm that the video is visible and not cropped or letterboxed unexpectedly.
  5. Check the sound. If the file contains rain audio, watch the OBS audio mixer while it plays. Make sure the meter moves and that the intended audio source is being sent to the stream.

Choose a single file or a playlist

For one rain video, use Media Source and its Loop option. If you deliberately want to rotate several clips, OBS also offers VLC Video, which can play a playlist and has a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A playlist is unnecessary for a single file.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if using the integrated option, or enter the server URL and stream key in the appropriate fields. Start the OBS stream only when you are ready to send the feed.
  4. Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder sends the feed and to accept that feed; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Check the current YouTube recommended encoder settings if labels or requirements have changed.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use a resolution that suits the source video and your upload capacity. A static rain scene does not automatically need the highest resolution; 720p30 or 1080p30 can both be reasonable choices depending on the original file and the stability of your connection.

Output choice YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate Practical consideration
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps Requires less upload capacity; choose it if it matches the source or gives your connection more room.
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps Can preserve more detail when the source supports it and the connection can sustain the bitrate.

The ranges are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of performance. Run an upload speed test and leave room beyond the stream bitrate: YouTube’s network tips recommend 20% headroom. For example, a stream set near the top of a bitrate range needs a correspondingly stronger, stable upload connection. Set the encoder to CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3. Review YouTube’s current encoder settings and network tips before a long broadcast.

Test the feed before going public

  1. Start a short private or unlisted test where practical.
  2. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview to confirm the intended video is arriving.
  3. Listen for the rain audio and check the OBS mixer meters; a visible video preview does not prove the audio is correct.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and address any warnings before starting the public event.
  5. Let the test run for a few minutes. OBS recommends testing settings, and YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.

Protect the recording

A planned 10-hour stream is below YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if the archive matters, and verify that the recording file is growing while the broadcast runs. See YouTube Help’s archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops at the end instead of restarting: Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is checked for that source.
  • The preview is black or shows the wrong clip: Confirm the correct local file is selected, the source is visible in the scene, and the scene is active. Reopen the source properties if necessary.
  • The picture appears, but there is no rain sound: Check whether the file includes an audio track, confirm the OBS mixer meter moves, and ensure the intended audio is included in the stream mix.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Verify the selected service or server URL and stream key in OBS against the stream in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • YouTube reports connection or stream-health issues: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, check for competing upload use, and test again with sufficient headroom. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
  • The live archive is missing or incomplete: Check the local recording first. YouTube’s archive guidance does not guarantee capture in every case, especially for streams exceeding 12 hours.
  • You are using VLC Video but the source is unavailable: Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS—or use the built-in Media Source for a single file.

Check rights to the video and audio

Before broadcasting, confirm that you own the rain video and its sound recording or have permission to use them on YouTube Live. A video being available online, or consisting of rain sounds, does not by itself establish permission. The OBS setup steps cannot determine the rights status of a particular file.
