Taking the playlist live, starting its playback, and starting the YouTube broadcast are separate actions. Their exact automation depends on your installed Wirecast version and event settings, so test the full sequence before relying on it unattended.
What “launch a playlist” can mean
Wirecast and YouTube each have their own stages. Opening the application does not necessarily restore your show; restoring the show does not necessarily put the playlist on air; taking a playlist live does not necessarily start its playback; and a live Wirecast output does not necessarily start the YouTube event.
- Open Wirecast: Windows launches the application after you sign in.
- Restore the show: Wirecast opens the saved document containing your playlist.
- Put the playlist on air and play it: The playlist shot is selected for the live output and its media begins playing.
- Start the YouTube broadcast: Wirecast and the YouTube event begin broadcasting.
Decide which of these you actually want automated. If the goal is a fully unattended stream, each stage needs to be configured and verified separately.
Configure Wirecast to open with Windows
Set up Windows to launch Wirecast after the relevant account signs in. The exact Windows 10 or 11 steps depend on the installation and account configuration; use the current Windows Startup apps or Task Scheduler instructions for your version rather than assuming one universal menu path. This step opens the app only. It does not establish that Wirecast will restore a show or start a stream.

Have Wirecast restore the show with your playlist
Save the Wirecast document that contains the playlist, then check the installed version’s Preferences for a setting equivalent to “Open last document on startup.” That wording appears in a December 2012 Wirecast for YouTube guide, but it does not confirm the setting’s name, availability, or behavior in current releases. Do not assume that finding a similarly named preference will also start playback or go live.
Telestream’s support page lists Windows 10 version 1809 or higher as the Wirecast Windows baseline and lists releases through 16.5.4. Check Telestream’s current Wirecast support page for updated compatibility and release information.

Put the playlist live and start playback
A Wirecast playlist is a shot in the live/preview workflow. The Wirecast 7 Windows guide describes selecting the playlist shot into Preview and clicking Go to take it live. Treat that as version-specific guidance: controls and labels can differ in newer builds. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows User Guide documents media commands including “Start Playing All Movies” and “Shuffle Playlist,” and describes AutoLive as placing a clicked shot in the Live Broadcast Area. These documented controls do not establish that playback or AutoLive runs automatically when Wirecast starts.
- Open the saved Wirecast show and locate the playlist shot.
- Use the Preview and Go workflow described in the guide for your installed version to place the playlist on the live output.
- Start playlist playback using the controls available in your version. Confirm that the expected item is playing and that the sequence behaves as intended.
If you need these actions to happen without an operator, verify whether your installed release offers the required startup behavior. The available documentation does not establish a universal setting that automatically takes a playlist live and starts its playback on application launch.

Configure and verify YouTube Live startup
Starting Wirecast output and starting a YouTube event are distinct. If you expect the YouTube broadcast to start automatically, inspect the current Wirecast destination and event settings, including any “Automatically Go Live” option, and confirm the corresponding YouTube event is configured as intended. Do not treat the option as a guarantee: Telestream’s version history records that Wirecast 16.5.1 fixed an issue where a stream would not automatically start a YouTube event when “Automatically Go Live” was checked. The history lists Wirecast 16.5.3 on June 10, 2026; check the current release notes because versions and behavior change. Telestream’s Wirecast information provides product and support links.
Test the entire chain after a full Windows sign-out or restart, using a private or otherwise appropriate test event. Monitor both Wirecast and the YouTube event: confirm the right show restored, the intended playlist is on air and playing, and YouTube reports that the broadcast has started. A successful app launch alone does not prove the other stages worked.

Troubleshoot the stage that failed
- Wirecast does not open after sign-in: Check the Windows startup configuration for the account that signs in, and confirm the configured application path points to the installed Wirecast release.
- Wirecast opens, but the show is missing: Open the saved document manually, then review the startup preference in that version. The “Open last document on startup” wording is documented in a 2012 guide, not established as the current label.
- The show opens, but the playlist is not live: Select the playlist shot using the Preview/Go workflow for your version. Restoring a document does not itself prove the shot has been taken live.
- The playlist is live, but not playing: Start playback with the available media controls and verify the sequence. The Wirecast 16 guide documents playback commands, not their automatic execution on Windows launch.
- Wirecast is sending output, but YouTube has not started the event: Check the event and destination configuration and the automatic-start setting in your installed version. Test again with the actual event setup; a historical fix in version 16.5.1 shows that this behavior has been version-sensitive.
