You can send an S3-hosted video to YouTube Live through an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, but selecting an S3 file does not by itself make the broadcast continuous. To keep it running after the file ends, configure and verify a repeat or loop strategy in the encoder or orchestration layer. The practical path is S3 media → encoder → YouTube Live, with looping and recovery handled as separate requirements.

Choose the streaming path

For a managed AWS setup, AWS Elemental MediaLive supports MP4 or HLS content from S3 as an input. Its workflow wizard includes an S3 MP4 input and YouTube as an output. MediaLive also supports RTMP and RTMPS live output groups, so the documented interfaces support an S3-to-MediaLive-to-YouTube architecture. AWS’s wizard is the lowest-friction documented starting point for a single S3 MP4 source.

For a custom pipeline, an encoder or stream-processing workflow reads the S3 asset, encodes it into a YouTube-compatible live stream, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest address using the stream name or key YouTube provides. That architecture follows the separately documented AWS and YouTube interfaces; it is not an end-to-end procedure verified here. Choose based on the control you need over looping, transitions, timestamps, monitoring, and recovery.

Set up the AWS MediaLive route

  1. Check the source. Confirm the video is accessible in your S3 bucket and is in a format your selected MediaLive input workflow supports. The AWS workflow wizard lists an MP4 stored on S3; MediaLive documentation also lists HLS as a supported input.
  2. Start with the workflow wizard. In AWS Elemental MediaLive, use its workflow wizard to configure the S3 MP4 input and YouTube output. Review the generated input, channel, and output configuration before starting it. AWS documentation identifies these input and destination choices, but exact console labels and availability can change.
  3. Configure the YouTube destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s output settings. Depending on the encoder, the server URL and key may be entered separately or combined. Treat the key like a password: limit access, do not publish it, and rotate it if exposed.
  4. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Select the RTMPS ingest endpoint when the chosen encoder and output support it.
  5. Set compatible encoding parameters. YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. MediaLive’s RTMP output supports H.264 video and AAC audio, making AAC the straightforward audio choice for this route.
  6. Match bitrate to the output format and connection. YouTube’s published recommendations include 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommended encoder settings, not guarantees about the upload bandwidth your connection can sustain. Test the actual sustained upload rate with margin before relying on the stream.
  7. Start and verify the stream. Start the encoder output and check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream health. Confirm the intended resolution and frame rate are arriving before treating the setup as ready for an unattended run.

Make playback continuous

A live output can stop when its file input reaches the end. The AWS workflow wizard’s documented S3 and YouTube options do not establish that it repeats a file indefinitely, so do not assume that selecting one MP4 creates an endless broadcast.

Configure an explicit repeat strategy in the encoder or in an orchestration layer that can restart or re-submit the media. Before deploying, test the behavior at file end, after an encoder restart, and after a network interruption. Confirm whether playback resumes, starts over, or leaves YouTube without an incoming stream; loop and recovery behavior depends on the implementation you choose.

Validate the full run before leaving it unattended

  • End of file: Let a test asset reach its end and observe whether the repeat strategy starts it again without ending the YouTube broadcast.
  • Encoder restart: Restart the encoder or its workflow in a controlled test and verify that the output reconnects and playback continues as intended.
  • Network interruption: Simulate a brief interruption if your setup permits, then confirm reconnect behavior and check YouTube for a healthy incoming stream.
  • Key security: Ensure the stream key is stored only where the encoder needs it and is not exposed in logs, shared configuration, or public repositories.
  • Long-run monitoring: Decide how you will detect a stopped input, failed output, stalled playback, or loss of YouTube ingest. The cited AWS and YouTube setup pages do not establish a particular monitoring or recovery configuration for your deployment.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Having a video in S3 does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including its music and other embedded material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and any applicable copyright claims before scheduling a continuous broadcast. Repeated playback does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee monetization; YouTube makes decisions under its own current policies.

Cost and operational trade-offs

MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding route, while a custom encoder or orchestrator can offer more control over playback and failure handling. The applicable AWS cost depends on the selected implementation and run duration; no end-to-end operating-cost figure is established here. Price the intended continuous run and test failure recovery before committing to a deployment. YouTube’s recommended bitrates also affect the sustained network capacity required, but are not themselves a network service price.
