There is no single best podcast editing program for every creator. Audacity is the clearest starting point if you want free, open-source audio editing; Adobe Audition suits a conventional waveform and multitrack workstation workflow; and Descript is worth evaluating if you want to edit audio or video through a transcript. Choose based on how you work, whether your show includes video, and what you want to spend—not on a universal ranking.

These options represent different workflows, not a tested head-to-head ranking. The right choice depends on your budget, editing habits, and whether you need audio-only production or video editing too.
How to compare podcast editors
Cost and usage limits
If avoiding a subscription is the priority, Audacity is a grounded first option to evaluate. With a paid editor, compare the current plan price and its billing terms in your region. For a free tier, check limits such as monthly media and AI credits: a tier can be useful for trying a workflow without necessarily covering a regular production schedule.
How you prefer to edit
Audition offers Waveform and Multitrack editors. Descript takes a transcript-first approach, letting you edit audio and video by editing their text. A timeline and waveform give direct control over tracks and sound; transcript-based editing may suit creators who naturally work from spoken words. Neither approach is best for everyone.

Recording and cleanup
Consider whether you record voices in the editing program or import recordings made elsewhere. Adobe describes Audition as supporting multitrack recording for several voices, level adjustments, and tools to remove unwanted noise. Those features may matter if your process involves multiple speakers or frequent cleanup; they are less decisive if you already record and process audio in another tool.
Audio-only or audio and video
For an audio-only show, focus on recording, track editing, and cleanup. If you also publish video, consider whether editing both formats in a transcript-oriented workflow would help. Confirm that a candidate’s current plans cover the formats and limits you need before paying.

What about other podcast editing programs?
Hindenburg, GarageBand, Logic Pro, and Reaper are also commonly named options, but current official plan details and capabilities are not established here. Treat them as candidates for separate evaluation rather than assuming specific features or prices. A comparison mention alone is not enough to determine which one fits your setup.
Does podcast editing software keep a YouTube channel live?
No. These editors help create and edit recordings; they are not a way to keep a YouTube channel streaming prerecorded video around the clock. Check publishing rights before you upload
Editing software does not grant rights to music, clips, or other material in a podcast. Before publishing, make sure you have permission to use the material in your recording and any associated video. YouTube’s copyright rules and its reused-content considerations are separate from which editor you use; review the copyright safety checklist if you are preparing material for a YouTube stream.
