To run a server playlist on YouTube Live, configure an encoder on the server to send the playlist’s video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The key authenticates the encoder feed; it does not contain, play, or schedule the playlist. Keep the playlist source and encoder running, confirm the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and monitor the broadcast before leaving it unattended.
What the stream key does—and what it does not do
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” In practice, the key is a credential the encoder uses with YouTube’s stream URL to send a feed. The server-side playlist supplies the media, and the encoder turns that media into the outgoing live feed. The key is not the playlist, the encoder, or the public watch-page link. YouTube’s encoder instructions put it simply: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Before you configure the server
Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s getting-started guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check eligibility and enable streaming before planning a launch window. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Choose and test the playlist and encoder
You need a playlist source that can keep advancing through its items and an encoder that can continuously send its output to YouTube. The encoder may be software or hardware. YouTube does not provide one universal server playlist scheduler, operating-system setup, or FFmpeg command for this workflow; configuration depends on the encoder and its version. Use that encoder’s current YouTube ingest instructions rather than assuming settings from another product.

YouTube’s encoder options page includes a CamStreamer app listing that describes support for “24/7 continuous streams.” That is a capability attributed to the listed product, not a guarantee that every encoder or playlist setup will run continuously. YouTube Help: encoder options.
Set up the YouTube stream key and connect the server
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or open one you have scheduled, then find its stream settings.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching server encoder fields. You can create a custom stream key to reuse settings, but treat any key as a password.
- Select RTMPS when supported and appropriate. YouTube’s secure ingest option is RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Live Control Room may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and copy the secure URL rather than assuming that the displayed endpoint is encrypted. YouTube’s documented SSL-error advice is to check that both the protocol and server are RTMPS; it also says port 443 can be specified. Follow the encoder’s own field format. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Configure the playlist output. Point the encoder at the playlist or media source and enter the YouTube URL and key. Keep the playlist available and make sure the encoder is set to send continuously. Exact playlist, reconnect, and output settings are implementation-specific; verify them for your encoder version.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. In Live Control Room, confirm YouTube is receiving the expected video and audio. If the broadcast is scheduled, use the on-screen Go live step when the preview is ready.
- End the stream deliberately. When ending a broadcast, stop sending content from the encoder as YouTube instructs. For an always-on channel, test the stop-and-restart sequence before relying on it operationally. YouTube Help: encoder setup and stream-key settings.
Protect the key and the broadcast
Keep credentials private
Do not publish a stream key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Restrict access to the server configuration and redact the key when sharing diagnostics. If a key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder; the encoder cannot keep using the revoked credential. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Use RTMPS intentionally
YouTube calls RTMPS “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Choose the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room when the encoder supports it and your deployment calls for encrypted transport. If you receive an SSL error, check that the selected protocol and server endpoint both use RTMPS; YouTube also suggests specifying port 443 for the documented case. Do not swap in an RTMPS URL while leaving the encoder configured for RTMP. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Checks to complete before leaving it unattended
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and confirm the expected image and audio.
- Let the playlist pass through item changes and verify it advances rather than stopping at the end of one file.
- Test a server or encoder restart and a network interruption; check how the specific setup reconnects and resumes the playlist.
- If you configured encoder failover, test it before depending on it.
- Confirm any independent local recording is actually being written and can be opened. Treat it as a separate safeguard, not a YouTube archive feature.
- Open the event from the channel and watch page, including on a mobile device, and monitor audio and video quality over time.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing failover, checking archive integrity, verifying accessibility, and monitoring quality. An always-on stream still needs an operational plan for alerts and recovery; a stream key alone does not provide monitoring or restart behavior. YouTube Help: live encoder settings and recommendations.

Will YouTube archive the whole always-on stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full, so do not rely on YouTube as the only recording of a stream that runs beyond that limit. If a complete recording matters, configure and periodically verify a separate local recording; that is an operational safeguard, not a promise about YouTube’s archive. YouTube Help: encoder setup and stream archives.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | The encoder is not running, or the URL/key pair is incorrect. | Check that the encoder is sending, then copy the current stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream into the matching fields. |
| The encoder reports an SSL error | The selected protocol and endpoint may not both be RTMPS. | Use the secure URL revealed in Live Control Room, select RTMPS in the encoder, and check YouTube’s port 443 guidance for the documented error case. |
| The stream stops when the playlist ends | The playlist or encoder is configured as a finite source rather than a continuous loop. | Check the chosen software’s playlist/repeat behavior and test a complete playlist transition before leaving it unattended. |
| The stream does not resume after a restart or interruption | Reconnect and playlist-resume behavior varies by encoder and deployment. | Test server restarts and network interruptions with the exact encoder version; configure and test its recovery or failover options rather than assuming they exist. |
| The old key no longer works | The key may have been reset or replaced. | Copy the active key from Live Control Room and update the server encoder configuration. |
| The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent after a long session | YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed full archive for longer broadcasts. | Use and verify an independent local recording when a complete copy is important. |
