To run prerecorded videos on YouTube without leaving a computer on, enable YouTube Live, upload and arrange your media in a cloud playout service, connect that service to YouTube with your stream URL and key, then test and monitor the stream. The cloud service sends the video to YouTube; your home computer can be off. “24/7” describes the intended ongoing availability, not a guarantee that every service can play one event or archive indefinitely.

Before you start: enable YouTube Live and choose the right workflow

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. If this is your first time streaming, enable Live in advance: YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose a hosted prerecorded-video or playlist workflow rather than assuming that a scheduled event is a persistent, endlessly looping feed. Before paying or uploading, check the provider’s current limits for playlist duration, item count, storage, file size, resolution, editing after launch, and restart behavior. Uptime, recovery, and alerts depend on the provider and should not be assumed.

Set up the cloud-to-YouTube stream

  1. Upload and arrange the videos. In the provider, choose its prerecorded livestream or playlist option, upload or select your files, set their order, and preview them. Confirm how the service handles looping and what happens at the playlist’s end.
  2. Create or associate the YouTube event. Add a clear title and description, thumbnail, category, privacy setting, and a date and time if scheduling. Confirm that the event is the right type for a recurring or continuous broadcast. For Restream specifically, playlist videos can be added, removed, or reordered only before going live; graphics and chat can be changed during playback. Its playlist feature cannot blend live and prerecorded content, and back-to-back playlists are separate streams with a two-minute buffer. Check Restream’s playlist documentation for current details.
  3. Copy YouTube’s connection details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream server URL and stream key into the matching fields in the cloud provider. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in screenshots. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions if you need to locate the fields.
  4. Run a representative test. Preview the actual video and audio, including motion and the transition between playlist items. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages before promoting the broadcast. If any part of the workflow uses a local encoder or sends a local feed to the service, test upload capacity; YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS to encrypt data into and through Google’s servers, and a 2-second keyframe interval, no longer than 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps; the appropriate value changes with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  5. Start and verify playback. Start the hosted playout using the provider’s launch controls. For a scheduled YouTube encoder stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then select Go Live. Check that the intended video is playing and that the event’s public, unlisted, or private setting is correct. Avoid launching a one-time event early: Restream says a YouTube event can only be gone live to once; see its YouTube Live Event guide.
  6. Monitor the stream. Check YouTube’s health status and the provider’s playback status after launch. Know how the provider reports interruptions and whether it reconnects or restarts automatically; do not infer recovery or alerting support from the fact that playout is cloud-hosted.

Check service limits before relying on a playlist

Provider limits are not YouTube-wide rules. For example, Restream’s documentation says its playlist feature requires specified Upload & Stream add-on tiers and supports up to 24 hours and 40 video items per playlist. Those caps describe Restream’s feature, not every hosted playout service. Its documentation lists Marathon at $79/month and Media at $239/month; these are provider-published prices in the article accessed in 2026, tied to those named tiers, and may change. Review the provider’s current plan page before purchase.

For any service, compare whether it repeats a playlist or plays one scheduled event, how it handles the end of a playlist and reconnects, the file and storage caps, output quality and transcoding, editing after launch, scheduling and privacy controls, and current plan cost. A playlist that runs for a day is not necessarily an indefinitely repeating feed.

Plan separately for the YouTube replay

YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not promise one automatically saved replay for a stream that runs longer than that. If a replay matters, plan shorter sessions or a separate recording and archive workflow, and verify YouTube’s current behavior. A continuous stream by itself does not make a channel or its videos eligible for monetization; YouTube says monetization depends on being in the YouTube Partner Program and meeting its requirements. Details are in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • You cannot start a first stream: Live may not yet be enabled. Activate it in YouTube Studio ahead of time; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct provider fields and that the key is current. Keep the key private.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Test the actual source and connection, then match the bitrate to the video’s resolution, frame rate, and codec. For local ingest, check upload capacity; use RTMPS and the recommended keyframe interval.
  • The playlist stops or cannot be changed: Check its duration and item caps, whether repeat is supported, and whether editing is locked after launch. These behaviors are provider-specific.
  • A stream does not restart after an interruption: Check the provider’s documented reconnect and restart behavior and its status or alerts. Cloud hosting alone does not establish automatic recovery.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream’s total duration. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours; longer broadcasts need a separate replay plan.
