YouTube does not broadcast a playlist URL by itself. This guide covers the setup decisions, encoder settings, costs, long-stream limitations, and what to check when the feed fails.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the enablement and connection steps.
- A DigitalOcean Linux Droplet with enough network capacity and compute for your chosen workflow. No universal minimum Droplet size is established for playlist streaming; test with your media and settings.
- Media you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder that can play or pass through that media and send it to YouTube.
- Your stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming on your channel and wait for activation if this is your first broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio, go to the Live Control Room, and create or schedule a stream.
- Retrieve the stream URL and stream key for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, shared log, or shell command history. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Keep the Live Control Room open for the initial test so you can inspect the preview and stream-health feedback.

Prepare the Droplet and choose an encoder workflow
Install and configure an encoder on the Droplet, then have it play the playlist and transmit the resulting feed to YouTube. OBS is one free, open-source encoder listed by YouTube; a different encoder or an FFmpeg-based workflow may suit server operation better. The right choice depends on your media formats and how you want to supervise playback.
Match the workflow to your files
- If the files are already encoded in formats YouTube accepts and your encoder can pass them through compatibly, avoiding re-encoding may reduce CPU demand. Confirm that the media, container, audio and encoder settings are compatible.
- If the encoder must re-encode, CPU demand depends on the source, output resolution, frame rate and codec. The appropriate Droplet size cannot be determined without testing that workload.
- Validate that the playlist advances between files and that audio remains continuous. Playlist syntax and restart behavior depend on the encoder; do not assume a command copied from a different environment will work unchanged.
YouTube’s encoder guide lists OBS, Gyre and Upstream. It identifies OBS as free and open source, Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams, and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Those listings do not establish current hosted-service prices, uptime, or feature limits.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use settings appropriate to the source files, desired output and available Droplet bandwidth. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four), up to 60 fps, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations for H.264, not guarantees that a particular Droplet or media file can sustain the selected rate. Avoid upscaling low-resolution source video simply to select a larger output; test the actual source and verify YouTube’s stream-health status.

Run a test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start with a short test using the same playlist, encoder settings and Droplet that you intend to use for the continuous broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, aspect ratio and playback order.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and correct warnings before relying on the stream.
- Observe the Droplet’s CPU and network use during playback, particularly if the encoder re-encodes video.
- Confirm that the encoder process continues across playlist transitions. Decide how you will detect and recover from a stopped process; server supervision and automatic restart configuration are choices to implement and test, not automatic properties of YouTube or a Droplet.

Choose between one long session and shorter broadcasts
A single 24/7 YouTube live session has an archive tradeoff. YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If the archive or rewind matters, end and restart the broadcast before the 12-hour threshold, check the channel’s archive settings, and verify that the resulting recordings appear as expected. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Storage needs depend on the chosen encoding and retention time, so estimate disk use from your actual output bitrate and how long you plan to retain recordings.
Estimate DigitalOcean costs
Budget for Droplet compute and outbound transfer separately. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation explains compute billing; a powered-off Droplet remains billable while its resources are reserved. Billing ends when the Droplet is destroyed.

DigitalOcean includes some outbound Droplet transfer and pools usage and allowance across Droplets at the team level. Additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer to Droplets is free. The included allowance depends on the plan and account, so check your team’s current usage and projections in DigitalOcean billing rather than relying on a universal quota. For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the encoder’s sustained output bitrate by the hours broadcast, then convert the result to GiB. Treat this as an estimate: actual usage can vary with stream overhead and observed output. Compare it with the account’s pooled allowance before choosing a broadcast schedule.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Check that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and the key for the intended YouTube broadcast.
- Confirm the key has not been changed or exposed. Replace it in YouTube Studio if necessary, then update the encoder’s saved credentials.
- Verify that the Droplet has outbound network connectivity and that the encoder is configured for the selected RTMPS or RTMP endpoint.
The picture buffers or stream health is poor
- Compare the encoder’s output rate with the Droplet’s available network capacity. If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, lower the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, then confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds) in the encoder.
- If the encoder re-encodes, check whether CPU load is interfering with real-time output; test a compatible pass-through workflow or reduce the encoding workload.
The playlist stops or has gaps
- Check whether the current media file has ended and whether the encoder is configured to advance to the next item or loop the list.
- Test every file in the playlist for supported video and audio formats, playback, and continuity.
- Inspect the encoder and system logs for process exits or file-access errors. If you add process supervision or automatic restarts, test the recovery path rather than assuming it will preserve the YouTube session.
The broadcast has no complete archive or rewind
Check the session length. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived and may have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. For reliable archive expectations, use shorter sessions and verify each recording in YouTube Studio.
