If OBS closes while loading a large gaming VOD playlist, first isolate the playlist, its media files, and any filters in a copy of your scene collection. A full application crash is different from dropped frames or a lost stream connection, which OBS treats as network troubleshooting issues. The exact cause cannot be identified without your OBS version, operating system, source type, and crash report.
Before troubleshooting: identify what is crashing
Note your OBS version and operating system, whether the playlist is a VLC Video Source or another source type, whether its files are local or network-based, and which filters are applied to it. Also note when the crash happens: while opening source properties, loading the playlist, changing tracks, or starting the broadcast. These details help distinguish a repeatable media or source problem from an unrelated failure.
Work in a duplicate scene collection rather than changing the live setup. In OBS, use Scene Collection to create or select a copy before removing sources or changing filters. Preserve the original collection so you can restore it if the test does not help.
Isolate the playlist and its media
- Test a small playlist. In the copied scene, reduce the playlist to a few files you know have played successfully. Reopen or reload the source and see whether OBS stays open.
- Test files individually. Add or play each candidate file on its own, then build the playlist back up in small batches. If the crash returns after adding one item, remove that file and test again.
- Check suspect entries. Confirm the file exists at the listed path and can be opened in a media player. Remove missing, invalid, or otherwise suspect entries while testing. An OBS issue report from 2023 describes a crash after an invalid file was added to a VLC source playlist and the properties dialog was closed; it is an individual report, not evidence that every playlist crash has the same cause. - Reproduce the problem in a minimal scene. Keep only the playlist source and any essential audio or video sources. If the small scene works but the full one crashes, add the removed sources back gradually to identify a combination that reproduces the problem.
Check VLC Video Source filters
If the playlist is a VLC Video Source and it has a Video Delay (Async) filter, remove that filter temporarily in the copied scene and test track changes. A 2022 OBS issue report described a crash while changing tracks in a VLC playlist with this filter. That historical case supports a targeted test, but does not establish that the filter causes crashes in current OBS versions. OBS Studio issue reports.

Reduce scene load while testing
OBS notes that sources use resources even when they are not visible. Temporarily disable or remove nonessential, resource-intensive sources, then retry the smaller playlist. This is a way to test whether scene complexity contributes to the failure; OBS’s performance guidance discusses resource use and performance, not a proven cause for every playlist crash. - Keep the test scene limited to the playlist and essential sources.
- Retest after removing filters or sources one at a time, so you know what changed.
- If you use game capture, try a test without overlays or FPS counters. OBS lists these among software that can conflict with game capture, but that guidance does not identify them as a specific cause of playlist-loading crashes. OBS Game Capture Troubleshooting.
Use the crash report to choose the next step
If a small playlist in a minimal scene still crashes, preserve the crash report and regular OBS log rather than making multiple unrelated changes. Record the exact action that triggers the failure and include the OBS version, operating system, source type, media details, and filters when asking for help through OBS’s official support channels. Without those details or the crash report, a specific fault cannot be inferred.

Do not treat stream bitrate, resolution, keyframe settings, or YouTube stream-key changes as playlist-crash fixes. Those settings affect stream output or connection behavior; they do not explain why OBS itself closes while loading a source.
When the symptom is actually a stream connection problem
If OBS remains open but the stream drops frames or disconnects, troubleshoot the connection separately. OBS’s connection guide describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server. A connection problem is not the same symptom as OBS crashing while a playlist loads. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
